We had a quad room with a king-size bed and bunk-bed singles. There was plenty of room for luggage, a small refrigerator to keep our drinks cold, and a good-sized bath. Very cheerful and comfortable; bathroom spotless; my son said the top bunk was a dusty (hence the good-not-excellent rating on cleanliiness) The rooms surround a courtyard where we had breakfast when weather allowed -- lovely! Good selection of food, too: Eggs, meats and cheeses, yogurt, cereal, bread, sweets, and fresh fruit. At 5:30, the bar serves delicious little appetizers, like bruscheta and bites of pizza, and the drinks are inexpensive. Free internet. Great location, just a block away from the (beautiful!) church of S. Maria in Trastevere, and the active, fun square in front of it. Tons of restaurants, bars, and gelateria in the neighborhood, and it's only a 15-minute walk to the Pantheon, Piazza Navona, or the Roman forum. Even closer to the restaurants and stalls along the river. Trastevere is just great, and the Hotel Santa Maria is a great place to stay there. A few comments in the guest book were negative on the staff serving breakfast, and they were occasionally brusque but still responsive to any request, and the front desk folks are truly gracious helpful!

The hotel and its garden is tucked away and felt like a hide-away from the heat and the activity of sight-seeing. Our family (quad) room was on two levels, and provided ample space for our two teenagers and ourselves. Staff were helpful and considerate. Navigating the enjoyable neighbourhood of Trastervere was a little challenging, but fun. Glad we had pre-booked an airport pick-up through the hotel.

picked this hotel based on the reviews and photos and it did not dissapoint. If you are looking for a luxurious place this is NOT the place. For casual relaxing comfort in beautiful surroundings in the heart of Rome it can't be beat.

Hotel Santa Maria was a wonderful place to stay for a few nights city break. It's well located and easy to walk to most of the main sites, it's also secluded and quiet at night. The staff couldn't have been more helpful, the rooms were cool and very clean and breakfast was lovely, including strong italian coffee. The courtyard with it's orange trees is the perfect place to start or end the day. The hotel also puts on a small, free buffet in the early eveining which is great to go with cold beer from the bar. Perfect!

This is a marvelous hotel, perfectly suited to my tastes. I abhor the uniformity of the international chains, do not need conference rooms, swimming pools, spas, or any of the other things that many people seem to think are indispensible. Instead I want a location close to where I want to be, within walking distance of good restaurants, cultural attractions, easy transport and, most importantly, a place with character. This hotel has it all, especially the character: the great garden; the integrated decor; the friendly staff; the location in Trastevere. A few years ago, before the New York Times singled it out and made it difficult to book, it was a hidden gem and easy to book. Now it is still a gem, but difficult to book because of the extreme demand.

I chose this hotel because of the excellent reviews on these pages, and we were not disappointed. What makes Hotel Santa Maria so good?
- Location: It´s in the middle of Trastevere with all the restaurants and the culture
- Quietness: In the courtyard you can´t tell that you are in Rome
- Great breakfast and afternoon buffet
- Free and fast Internet
The staff was very helpful. Will stay there again, I´m sure.

We loved Hotel Santa Maria!

The room was fantastic; clean and comfortable and cute. Staff was very friendly and helpful... and all spoke English. Complimentary breakfast under the orange trees was fantastic, as was the GREAT "wine time" that started at 5:30 PM, complete with loads of Roman snacks. Overall a great experience; would recommend it to anyone staying in Rome!
