“Great value & superb location”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 September 2008

Nestled on a fairly quiet street leading up to the Colosseum, the Hotel Apollo is an ideal location for sightseeing in Rome. Its central location makes it easy to walk to most of the major spots, including the Colosseum, Roman Forum, Trevi Fountain, Pantheon, Spanish Steps and more.

It’s a fairly basic no-frills hotel, but it’s comfortable and clean. We were in room 404 which doesn’t face via de Serpenti and was very quiet at night. My only complaint with our room was the bathroom. The shower was so, so teeny. It was nearly impossible to move at all while in it, and I’m a normal-size person! There wasn’t an exhaust fan, either, so it took forever to de-steam after showering. Also, the “towels” were a bit odd, in that they were extremely thin (like a dish towel, literally).

The staff was pleasant. We got a lot of great tips on where to shop, where to go for nightlife and just answers to general questions from Alessandro, who is very helpful and there in the evenings.

Complimentary breakfast was included in our rate and it’s served on a cozy shaded patio on the 5th floor. The selection was good (pastries, breads, meats, cheeses, fruit, cereal, etc.) and the cappuccinos were of course delicious. There’s also a small bar adjacent to reception, but unfortunately it was never open during our stay. It would’ve been nice for a casual drink after a long day of sightseeing. There’s also a computer with internet access in the bar area, and the rates are reasonable (I think 2€ or 3€ for an hour).

The best part, though, was the location. There’s a cute little square just down the block with a few cafes/restaurants that we went to for a drink everyday after sightseeing. There’s also a fantastic restaurant in the square, Gli Angeletti, which we liked so much that we ate there twice during our stay. Definitely give it a try. There are also a few nearby delis and gelato shops in the area are plentiful! It’s also a cheap cab ride to Trastevere, a fun area with loads of restaurants right on the river.

The Hotel Apollo served as a great base for us to explore Rome, and I’d certainly stay there again.

We rented a junior suite at the Hotel Apollo in Rome, and were delighted with the accommodations. We had a private outdoor terrace, as well as a sitting room, and seperate bedroom. Our two teenagers slept in the sitting room, and were quite happy! The location was fantastic, the Colisieum was right down the street!!! In terms of price, the Hotel Apollo was moderate compared to others in the area. I do not know how the average rooms are, but I highly recommend the junior suite if traveling with two children or teenagers.

  • Liked — The charm of the junior suite and the location.
  • Disliked — The stairs to climb!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Stayed for five nights (May 2008) with my husband and college age daughter. Would definitely recommend and return to this small hotel. We stayed in the triple room facing the back. No view but quiet. The room was not huge but roomy enough. The bathroom with shower was nicely appointed and immaculate. Yes, their towels are like dish towels. Very thin, but large and absorbent. They were changed every day. No face towel, though,so bring your own if you use one. The upstairs breakfast room and deck were wonderful, as was the buffet breakfast. The buffet breakfast far surpassed the other three hotels we stayed in Italy on our trip. They served three types of juices, American coffee as well as freshly prepared cappuccino, rolls, warmed pastries, a variety of cheeses and meat spreads, cereals, yogurt, a variety of fruit from cans, and pound cake. Yum! As for location, it was very convenient to Via Nationale a major bus route (one block) and the Cavour Metro stop (walking distance of 2 blocks). And walking distance to the Coliseum/Forum and Trevi Fountain. The staff always made us feel welcome and communication was not a problem. As another reviewer pointed out the immediate neighborhood is quiet and not touristy. On the same block there are several very good small and reasonable restaurants (try the Due Colonne Ristorante/Pizzaria). Around the block on the next parallel street is a small well stocked grocery store. We also asked for a dinner recommendation from the staff and were very pleased with their recommendation. There is no internet access in the rooms; however they have a computer available to guests off the lobby. Also, there is an internet spot (with numerous computers) almost next door. On arrival we took a taxi from the airport. Make sure you agree on the set rate from the airport with the driver. There is a posted sign at the taxi stand. We left for Florence by train and took the metro to the station. Very easy even with rolling luggage. See my other reviews of Hotel Caravaggio, Florence and La Locandiera, Venice.

We stayed only 2 nights at the Hotel Apollo in May 2008 and had a fantastic time. The location is ideal for walking around the historic centre of Rome, only minutes from the Collosseum and 5-10 mins walk to most other key attractions.
We'd booked a standard double room but when we got there were told that none were available so they'd given us an upgrade to their suite! The suite turned out to be a one bedroom apartment in the building right next door which was no problem - in fact, it was fantastic as we don't think there was anyone else in the building, it was so quiet! The suite had a great roof terrace with a table and chairs, a small lounge area with tv and 2 comfy chairs, a big bedroom and decent size bathroom with 2 vanity basins - a real bonus.
The first night we were there we decided to buy some wine, cheese, bread etc... and have dinner on our terrace - which would have been lovely except it started to rain! Breakfast in the morning was lovely - held on the roof terrace of the main hotel building, it was a continental buffet style with rolls, fruit, cereal, cheese, ham and fantastic capuccinos! The staff were very friendly and spoke good English.
The second night we asked the manager for a recommendation, and he sent us to a local restaurant that he'd said was not fancy but the food was good. Unfortunately, this was the only negative part of our experience with Hotel Apollo - the restaurant was very average, the staff spoke almost no English and it was quite obvious that the Manager was paid a commission for referring us there.
Other than that, we'd highly recommend the Hotel Apollo for a very comfortable and very convenient location in Rome - for a very reasonable price.

Hotel Apollo has a great location two blocks from the Colosseum. This is a small hotel with an elevator. The room was lovely and clean with a modern bathroom. Breakfast was typical. I meandered around the neighborhood and found, just two blocks away, a lovely small Piazza with a cafe and fountain. It is close enough to other attractions for a nice walk or the hotel will call a cab for you. There are a number of restaurants in the winding streets nearby and a great fish restaurant just two blocks away.

My husband and I, along with my parents, stayed at the Apollo Hotel in April and had a great experience!

We stayed in two seperate rooms, but both exceeded our expectations. The room my husband and I had was large with two windows overlooking the street below. The room was nicely decorated and included a wardrobe that housed a safe. The beds were very comfotable. The bathroom was small, but very clean. There were plenty of towels and the hairdryer worked well.

The neighborhood was very pleasant and there were many local restaurants to choose from. The best one was a block or so down from our hotel (towards Via Nationale) near the Internet Cafe. I can't remember the name, but the walls were painted bright yellow inside. It was very quaint and the food was delicious and resonable. (Try the Walnut Gorganzola Ravioli!)
Additionally, the Gellateria on our street (block or so towards the Colossieum) was wonderful. My husband and father would make repeat visits each day!

The staff at the hotel was helpful. The assisted us in finding restaurants and getting a taxi a few times. No matter who we encountered, they always had a smile on their face and were ready to assist.

The breakfast on the rooftop terrace was also good. Each morning, there were a variety of coffees, juices and tea, along with fruit, pastries, breads, yogurt and cereal.
