“Terrific mosaics”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 February 2014

A gem of a church, with stunning mosaics. The Chapel of St.Zeno, from 817, is exquisite, and the apse and triumphal arch mosaics are also magnificent. Watch out for the holy phoenix. The floors are also superb, Cosmati in the nave and opus sectile in the chapel. The confessio, under the high altar, is also rather fine, with the simple sarcophagi of the saints giving it a monumental dignity. Make sure you have a supply of 1 Euro coins for the lights on the mosaics.

“One of the oldest churches in Rome”

Look out for the mosaics. They are most unique. Note the square halo on one of the saints meaning that the saint in question was still alive when the mosaic was done.

Just across the piazza from the magnificent Santa Maria Maggiore. Inside it is a veritable treasury of centuries-old mosaics which hold their charm and freshness for us today. read the descriptions in advance so you can enjoy these treasures..

“Worth a visit”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 January 2014

This is near St Mary Major. Don't skip this. I love how it's a trek down an unassuming alley and then you step inside! (So many things in Italy are like that.) It's worth seeing after your visit to St. Mary Major. The mosaics and art work are wonderful to behold. And then there's the pillar of Christ's scourging. Take note of the hours it's open so you don't miss it.

“A must see, very close to Santa Maria Maggiore.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 December 2013

The mosaic ceiling in what I call the chapel to the left when you come into the church is worth the visit. As Rick Steves' suggests, put in the €1 to illuminate the chapel. You'll be glad you did and you'll earn some brownie points from the other visitors too!
