“Difficult to find but worth the search”
Reviewed 15 July 2013

These serviced apartments are right in the heart of Rome, a short walk to all the major attractions that this beautiful city has to offer. The rooms were clean, spacious and the bathroom was a delight. We stayed 5 nights, during which my teenage son managed to lose his iPod. The front desk staff were only too happy to contact the places we had visited to see if it had been found. They took considerable time to do this and I really appreciated their efforts on our behalf. breakfast was a little disappointing as by 0930 one morning (breakfast runs from 0730 through to 1100) they had run out of eggs, but apart from that we managed to fill up every day. It's proximity to Anima Mundi (very cool bar/restaurant) was one of the big attractions for us.

Stayed here for 4 nights. Clean room, design furniture, comfy bed and a great bathroom. Large balcony and a great view over the rooftops of Rome. Great breakfast, staff was making coffé of your choice. The location is great, and frontdesk staff is very helpful.

Room Tip: Great views from the top floor rooms.

The pictures of the hotel are very deceiving; according to the photos, the hotel looks very urban and modern, and just plain cool, however what I saw when we got there it was definitely not that. Our room was unfortunately a big disappointment, the walls were white and completely bare of any art work, there were no decorative accents anywhere, and there were stains on both the walls and carpeting. The beds were horrible, the bed in the master bedroom was ridiculously hard, and the pull-out couch/roll-away beds were so uncomfortable I had to put the couch cushions under the mattress in order to sleep. It's one saving grace was that it was within decent walking distance from the colosseum and forum, however the exact location of the hotel is weird, and no cars can drive up to the front of it, so you have to walk up an incline on a cobble stone street carrying your suitcases. I feel for the price and the rating that this hotel has it did not meet my expectations. This was one of five hotels I stayed in and it was by far the worst, they didn't even have free wifi (10 euro for 24 hours)!

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view of the gardens and the ancient ruins (room 45 had a good one).

Palazzo al Velabro is wonderful. I think some of the other reviewers might have been expecting something typically American, and that's just not going to happen in Europe. If it does, I'm not sure the point of going to Rome instead of Pittsburg.

The location is amazing. The hotel is located on a tiny twisting road, the Via al Velabro. It twists past a bar, a church, and the Arch of Janus on its way around the Palazzo al Velabro to another church and another bar as well as a convenience store and a couple of restaurants. It is a two minute walk to a Farmer's Market, the Tiber, the Mouth of Truth, and the Church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin. Within five minutes are the Capitoline Museums, the Capitoline Hill, the Roman Forum, the Vittorio Emmanuel, the Circus Maximus, and the Campidoglio. It's within easy walking distance of the Trevi Fountain, Piazza Navonna, the Pantheon, the Area Sacra, Trastevere, the Colosseum, the Domus Aurea, Saint Peter in Chains Church, la Isola, the Ghetto, and many other popular Rome attractions. It's right in the middle of everything. I think every room must have a view of either the Roman Forum or the Piazza Bocca della Veritas.

If you want brand-spanking-new, don't stay at a hotel in a centuries-old palace. We had a suite for us and our two children. There was a nice separate bedroom with a king bed for us. A large-ish bath had a shower/tub combo, lavatory with under-sink cabinet, toilet, and bidet. There were plenty of towels for our family of four. As is typical in Italy it was all marble walls, floors, etc. in the bath. The living area included a fold-out sofa that was great for the kids, a desk with TV and chair, and a side chair. The dining area had four chairs at a table and a small kitchenette tucked behind a folding door. It changes everything for Americans traveling with children to have a refrigerator and the ability to prepare at least small meals, since Italian meal times are so different from what our kids here are used to. The carpet was nice - clearly newer than the last total overhaul of the suite. That matters because it means they are maintaining the hotel well. The bedding included triple sheeting and enough pillows. Some parts of the room showed some normal wear-and-tear like faded creases of drapes or slight wear on the corners of upholstery. It was, however, clear that the hotel does maintain the rooms as they age. Everything worked perfectly and nothing seemed ragged. The mattresses were foam, so they were a little harder than I would have liked. They were, however, clean and comfortable. One unexpected bounty was that the windows opened in the traditional casement style. It was really nice to be able to open the window to get a feel for real Roma.

One of the greatest features of the hotel, though, was the staff. The front desk was wonderful. They helped us with everything from finding a restaraunt open very late (even for Rome), finding money changers, and figuring out where our credit cards were welcome to communicating complicated expectations to cab drivers, making dinner reservations, and making sure we had everything we needed to check out on time. They knew local customs and local businesses, and seemed to find nothing more important than helping us with whatever we needed, no matter how silly or unprecidented. All spoke perfect English, even including unusual vocabulary outside the normal scope of their field.

There is no pool or other typical American large-hotel services like a restaraunt, vending machines, ice machines, etc. The restaraunt is open for a continental breakfast. It is fairly expensive, and while you do get a breakfast appropriate for the price, it is not typical American fare. We walked down the road to a bar or pastry shop for breakfast instead. None of that matters in light of the location, room, and staff.

All in all a wonderful place. We wished we'd spent our entire vacation there!

Room Tip: There is a premium for more-recently renovated rooms. The older rooms are quite serviceable, clean...

We stayed 1 night and I have to say.. This hotel was perfectly located for us to walk or catch a cab to any attraction we wanted to see. Receptionist was Great and booked us for a 2:00 pm Vatican Visit. Our Hotel Room was great and Bed was comfortable. Complimentary Breakfast was fantastic, plenty of meats, cheese, cereal, eggs, and of course authentic Cappuccino... The Receptionist let us leave our bags with her behind the front desk since we were going to the Coliseum early in the morning and check out was 11:00 and Our cab driver wasn’t going to pick us up until 1:00pm. Just a some advice when catching a cab not all drivers speak English.. So take a picture of a Landmark close to your hotel.. So when you get in the cab, show the driver the picture of where you need to go and hold on.. Saved us a lot of miscommunication.. Pictures are worth a thousand words and probably saved us many euros… I give this Hotel a 2 Thumbs up…

Room Tip: Review the website.. they have pictures of the rooms

So it was crunch time for our honeymoon and we need a place to crash for 2 days before our cruise. Online this place looked baller as hell! So we get there expecting this gangster modern room like we saw online and what we got was a throwback 1990's room from grandmas house with a mini kitchenette. That being said the hotel was in decent shape the room was clean the shower didn't have a mat in it and I nearly slipped to my death while showering. But the location of this place is legit and you can roll all over Rome and walk no problem. They have a breakfast available for 12euro don't waste your time walk on out and find a cafe you will be much happier. No complaints other than the picture advertised was not what we got but price was fair for comparable places just didn't like the voodoo picture advertising.

We have two types of rooms available in our residence, economy and standards. The economy has a cost of 25% less than the standard. Anywhere you can see the pictures of the apartments standard and economy and their differences.
I am very sorry when you accuse us of showing pictures untrue because one of our values is to be respectfull to our guests and we know that there is no advantage to not being truthful.

Our party of 12 had a total of five rooms. We booked to have a kitchen area and location to Rome attractions. The kitchens were usable but nothing more. The beds are hard, the roll away's require chiropractic repair work after a nights sleep. The front desk can give wrong to misleading advice at times. This is more likely our lack of worldly understanding. There is a great little pizza bar out the front and to the left. Guess what, we would go back. We loved the location, the staff gave a good effort, the views were good, the breakfast suited our needs. As to complaints about Internet cost and speed, welcome to Rome. Use the free wifi at the local bar.
