This hotel exceeded all of our expectations for "first-time" Rome visitors. Although the room was small (by American standards) our stay could not have been more enjoyable. The room was very clean and although the bathroom was small, it was sufficient for our needs. When you step out of this hotel and cross the small street in front of the hotel, you are in Vatican City at St. Peter's Square. What an amazing sight. Our room was very clean and the staff extremely accommodating and helpful with suggestions and hints to enhance our stay in Rome. The breakfast(s) were 5 star. The view from the terrace encompassed the entire St. Peter's Square and the front of the Basilica. The staff was very helpful in giving us directions to meet out tour group near the Colosseum. The accommodations were a little pricy but we would stay here again if we ever return to Rome.

My family loved the old world charm and elegance of this no-frills hotel. It was fun to imagine how the priests must have lived and prayed in this former monastery. And everyday they sent you a bible reading right at your doorstep! The hotel was right next to the Vatican walls and offered a beautiful view of St Peter's Square. The staff was very friendly and helpful. I would definitely stay here again.

Whilst not religious, my wife & I could not have wished for a better impression for our first Rome visit. I had noted reviewers concerns of price & religious overtones. Yes, it is not cheap but on par I would say with most capital cities. The tranquility of the hotel is a pleasant change to many city hotels which are bustling, noisy and crowded. The rooms are on the small side but spotlessly clean, well maintained and perfectly adequate for two, even with large cases! A bath would have been nice though. Whilst facing onto the main street leading up to St Peter's Square, we didn't find it noisy, except on Wednesday morning for the Papal audience but even that didn't wake us and the sight of the milling crowds below was part of the day's atmosphere to us! The hotel arranged airport transfers and provide all guests with admission tickets to the Wednesday audience! There were plenty of reasonably priced restaurants locally, especially on a pedestrianised street across St Peter's Square and equally for the shoppers, a street of local and usual high street outlets about 10 mins stroll away. Obviously you are on point for the various Vatican tours [ gardens closed at present ]. We opted for a package deal with OMNIA [ check web site ]. Paid £70 each for a 3 day pass for the hop on / off open top bus tour of City which also included entry to Vatican museums with 'skip the Q' entry via their agents, plus entry to 2 other attractions [ Colliseum, Forum etc ] Great value and ticket office to pick up your passes and organise tour times is just around the corner from the hotel.
Can't wait to go back!

You can't fault this hotels location or the helpfulness of the staff. However, Rome is not a huge city and if being next to St Peters Square isn't critical, you can get better value for money else where in central Rome.

The hotel is clean and breakfast is OK, but the room (standard double room) was really small and you can hear a fair amount of noise outside your door. OK you're not in Rome to stay in the room, but there were two of us with quite large suitcases and getting ready for a night out was...tiresome.

We also thought being in a former Monastery it might have a little more character, but it feels like an average business hotel.

I've nothing really bad to say about this hotel, but apart the location it isn't anything special either and is probably a little overpriced.

We recently enjoyed 3 nights in a Junior Suite overlooking St Peters Square- what's the time- let me look at St Peters clock. A superb, comfortable, quiet and well located hotel. The bed was extremely comfortable and the staff helpful. A delicious breakfast was served in the breakfast room with a wide choice and we also enjoyed a light dinner on the patio. Don't look beyond this delightful hotel.

My husband and I recently stayed here and found it to be wonderful. The staff was wonderful!!!! The views from the rooftop balcony/bar are wonderful and you can throw a stone to St. Peter's square and the bascillica ... We saw the pope twice and once was on Sunday morning from the roof of the hotel!

Also, if you walk down the street behind the hotel there are wonderful places to eat. La Vittoria!!! Delicious and affordable... If you make friends with the waiter....the price goes down everyday. The house red wine is excellent !,,,

Spent three nights at this hotel with my sister in a superior twin room in the newly part. Very nice room, not huge, but enough. Lovely bathroom. Lousy wifi connection in room even though I had paid, had to sit in the corridor. Great staff, very helpful and friendly. Breakfast was ok, nothing special. Literally across the road from St.Peters square, so if it is the Vatican you are after this is the place.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Residenza Paolo VI, established on the premises of an Augustinian Monastery, was inaugurated at the beginning of the Holy Year 2000. The genius loci and the charm of tradition, still alive in its ancient walls, make this property your "private" haven in Rome, far away from chaos, in the pulsing heart of the Eternal City. Rome has many hotels, but only one of them is located directly on St. Peter's Square (Vatican): Residenza Paolo VI, the ideal place for those wishing to stay in the heart of Christendom, close to St. Peter's Basilica, the Vatican Grottoes, the Necropolis, St Peter's and Saint John Paul II's tombs, the Vatican Gardens and St. Angel's Castle. Walking along the Vatican Wall, it's easy to reach the Vatican Museums and visit the famous Sistine Chapel. Furthermore, some of our rooms offer special view of the Holy Office or of the internal courtyard of the ancient monastery or even of St. Peter's Dome. From our magnificent Terrace it is possible to admire up close St. Peter's Basilica and the Apostolic Palace, exactly where the Holy Father Pope Francis appears to bless the faithful and to recite the Sunday Angelus. ... more   less
