Booking this hotel was the best choice we made. Great location ( on the gates of Vatican), liked the idea of being settled in ex monastery, breath taking vies from the 2nd floor ..... All in all you are paying the location. And you are paying it high. Apart from that, rooms are clean, but very basic and narrow ( ex monks cells).

cons:
- wi-fi is payable
- only B&B offered; although you can take some soups and menu meals in the hotel

Room Tip: - Rome is all about eating in ristorante, so go out and have fun experiencing it. - if visiting Va...

Would highly recommend this hotel to various types of people (families, couples, honeymooners, mixed groups, everyone is welcome).
We really had nothing to complain about. It is impossible to be better located in Rome!!!! In the main square well restored. All the people at the hotel are very nice and warm. A recommended place with the eyes closed.

This hotel has a great position overlooking the Vatican and St Peters. Also good for the Borga nearby for evening restuarants - which were good value.
Watching the Pope's Sunday address fro the Hotel balcony was a great experience. Clost to the other central areas of Rome and the river Tiber
Hotel breakfasts were very good too. Room was small though - only negative really, but was adequate for a short stay (5 days in our case).

Great location, steps from Piazza San Pietro. A nice little haven amidst the chaos of the crowds of tourists and pilgrims. The rooms are small and basic but this is expected for the price and fantastic location if the Vatican and surrounds are your priority. If wanting something with more vibrancy and a cosmopolitan feel then somewhere near the Spanish Steps may be recommended. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Nearest metro station is a bit of a hike but takes one right past Basilica San Pietro so not too hard to take.

Stayed recently at this hotel. Recommended by friends. Very atmospheric.. Wonderful views of vatican from roof terrace as well as room window. Can clearly see Pope on balcony. Wondered about security!! Very good breakfast compared to usual continental breakfast one normally gets in Europe.
Rooms a bit basic. Double bed against wall so had to climb over my husband to get to bathroom in middle of the night.
Solitary barman on roof terrace could get overwhelmed when a large group turned up.
Reception staff excellent and very knowledgeable'. One spoke 5 languages!

Room Tip: Choose room to the right of reception area. Beware noisy pilgrims attending pope's audience. Th...

This hotel exceeded all of our expectations for "first-time" Rome visitors. Although the room was small (by American standards) our stay could not have been more enjoyable. The room was very clean and although the bathroom was small, it was sufficient for our needs. When you step out of this hotel and cross the small street in front of the hotel, you are in Vatican City at St. Peter's Square. What an amazing sight. Our room was very clean and the staff extremely accommodating and helpful with suggestions and hints to enhance our stay in Rome. The breakfast(s) were 5 star. The view from the terrace encompassed the entire St. Peter's Square and the front of the Basilica. The staff was very helpful in giving us directions to meet out tour group near the Colosseum. The accommodations were a little pricy but we would stay here again if we ever return to Rome.

My family loved the old world charm and elegance of this no-frills hotel. It was fun to imagine how the priests must have lived and prayed in this former monastery. And everyday they sent you a bible reading right at your doorstep! The hotel was right next to the Vatican walls and offered a beautiful view of St Peter's Square. The staff was very friendly and helpful. I would definitely stay here again.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Residenza Paolo VI, established on the premises of an Augustinian Monastery, was inaugurated at the beginning of the Holy Year 2000. The genius loci and the charm of tradition, still alive in its ancient walls, make this property your "private" haven in Rome, far away from chaos, in the pulsing heart of the Eternal City. Rome has many hotels, but only one of them is located directly on St. Peter's Square (Vatican): Residenza Paolo VI, the ideal place for those wishing to stay in the heart of Christendom, close to St. Peter's Basilica, the Vatican Grottoes, the Necropolis, St Peter's and Saint John Paul II's tombs, the Vatican Gardens and St. Angel's Castle. Walking along the Vatican Wall, it's easy to reach the Vatican Museums and visit the famous Sistine Chapel. Furthermore, some of our rooms offer special view of the Holy Office or of the internal courtyard of the ancient monastery or even of St. Peter's Dome. From our magnificent Terrace it is possible to admire up close St. Peter's Basilica and the Apostolic Palace, exactly where the Holy Father Pope Francis appears to bless the faithful and to recite the Sunday Angelus. ... more   less
