I was fortunate enough to spend 4 nights in Residenza Paolo VI while in Rome on business. It is always so comforting, when I travel alone, to feel both extremely safe and remarkably well cared for. This gem of a boutique hotel manages to strike the perfect balance - and the location is, as other reviewers have noted - simply unbeatable. One of the real advantages for me was the fact that there is a small dining room where they not only serve a very substantial breakfast, but a modest (and modestly priced) dinner between 4 and 8 p.m. It is almost unheard of to have dinner available in Rome at that early hour, and it is a blessing after either a long day of trans-Atlantic travel or a long day in tiring meetings. The hotel staff is fabulous. There isn't anything they can't do for you. I would agree that this is my only hotel of choice in Rome for the foreseeable future!

Room Tip: The rooms on the main floor are small, but well appointed. The rooms on the upper floor are larger i...

Nice and clean hotel. Super terrace with a nice view of St. Peters Dome. The Breakfast was a 5 in my book very fancy. The room we had , had a view of the dome also. The hotel is across the street from St. Peters Square. On Sundays they sit on the terrace when the Pope speaks. They will allow you to leave your luggage if yiu get there early or want to stay late.

This has got to be the best kept secret in Rome. A small hotel 10 steps (literally) from St. Peter's Square. For those going to the Vatican this is absolutely the best place to stay. The staff are wonderful. They bend over backwards to meet your needs. The price is amazing. We paid 124€ for the night. The room was clean, well decorated & ample for our needs (myself & my husband). There is a small terrace from where you can see St Peter's & close enough to participate in the Sunday Angelus from there. Breakfast was included and offered a wide variety - meats, cheeses, cereals, croissants, juices, fruit, scrambled eggs & bacon, breads ... the list goes on. There is a bar on the same floor of the terrace that is open from 4pm to midnight. I know a lot of people complained about the size of the room but I really feel they exaggerated. You don't go to Rome to stay in the hotel all day. We were not cramped at all. Really, if you want a great place to stay, go to Residenza Paolo!

We spent 3 nights at this very nice hotel which is almost on St Peters Square. Check in was good and we were shown to our twin room which although very small was spotless and adequate for our short stay. The bathroom was nice with plenty towels, complimentary toiletries and slippers. I had asked for a quiet room and from other reviews it seems that some rooms overlook an internal courtyard and may be quieter than ours which was close to the main road but did have a view of the cupola if you could see out the window which was extremely high. Overall we were satisfied with the room but please note that the standard rooms are very small and quite dark. The hotel website indicates satellite channels are available but there are NO English channels at all. Breakfast is served on the top floor between 7.30 and 10.00 and is very good. Continental hams and cheeses, bacon and scrambled eggs, cold hard boiled eggs, bread and pastries as well as cereals, fruit and yoghurt. Certainly something for everyone and plenty of it. Tea and coffee freely available and cappuccino was offered each morning to those guests from the continent but not to us for some reason. There is an outside terrace with lovely views of St Peters Cupola.
Generally the staff are very pleasant. A special mention to the female staff member who I arranged a wake up call for early on our departure day....... When I said we were leaving at 7.30 she arranged breakfast bags for us to bring on our journey. A lovely touch and thanks very much to her!!!
Ottivano metro station is about 10 minutes walk from the hotel and here you can go about 5 stops to Termini Station for €1.50 each. Alternatively you can get the 64 bus from very close to the hotel but this is not as regular or reliable as the metro which go's every 2 to 3 minutes. If I were to go again I would certainly get the metro.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the courtyard and also if you have a room on the second floor ask for one...

Rom is a fascinating but chaotic city, where it is difficult to find a silent place. Well, I think that Residenza Paolo VI is the quietest place in the whole city! The hotel is located at the third and fourth floors of a building just behind Bernini’s colonnade and many rooms have windows overlooking an internal courtyard. There were guests from many different countries, but many of them were German and all of them very silent, which is unusual in most hotels in Rom. The hotel has a beautiful and spacious terrace with a unique view to San Pietro and the Apostolic Palace.
My room (with two comfortable beds )was not large but quite sufficient for two, the bathroom was comfortable too, all was clean and in good working order. The remarkable breakfast offers a vast and rich selection of different foods. The staff was kind and helpful, but not all the information provided has proved correct.

If you want to visit the Vatican, this is the best place to stay, you can see it from your window. The rooms are small but clean and comfortable, its very good value for money. The hotel team are friendly and helpful.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the Vatican side, its a great view and a little quieter.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Residenza Paolo VI, established on the premises of an Augustinian Monastery, was inaugurated at the beginning of the Holy Year 2000. The genius loci and the charm of tradition, still alive in its ancient walls, make this property your "private" haven in Rome, far away from chaos, in the pulsing heart of the Eternal City. Rome has many hotels, but only one of them is located directly on St. Peter's Square (Vatican): Residenza Paolo VI, the ideal place for those wishing to stay in the heart of Christendom, close to St. Peter's Basilica, the Vatican Grottoes, the Necropolis, St Peter's and Saint John Paul II's tombs, the Vatican Gardens and St. Angel's Castle. Walking along the Vatican Wall, it's easy to reach the Vatican Museums and visit the famous Sistine Chapel. Furthermore, some of our rooms offer special view of the Holy Office or of the internal courtyard of the ancient monastery or even of St. Peter's Dome. From our magnificent Terrace it is possible to admire up close St. Peter's Basilica and the Apostolic Palace, exactly where the Holy Father Pope Francis appears to bless the faithful and to recite the Sunday Angelus. ... more   less
