“Great for a hostel, a bit lacking for a hotel”
Reviewed 15 April 2010

If you're looking for a clean, relatively well-located and relatively cheap place to sleep in Rome this is a great match. I stayed in the dorm room and it was much larger and cleaner than almost all the other hostels I've stayed in. It's also nice to feel like you're more in a hotel.

However, this is mostly a budget hotel, most of the rooms are private doubles. In this regard, I feel like the staff should be a bit friendlier and more helpful. Perhaps it was because I was there over a holiday weekend, but I often had to search the place to find the staff member who was supposed to be at the front desk and I had problems twice trying to get them to help me make reservations. Also, the internet conection was very slow and there was a lot of noise in the night from people constantly coming and going to the bathrooms.

I would stay here again if I was looking for a dorm bed but I don't think I'd stay here if I had enough in my budget to pay for a private room.

THE BEEHIVE
70 Euros for double shared bath in an apartment. 50 Euros for dorm
via marghera 8 - 00185 Rome, Italy -[--]

We stayed in the Acacia Apartment - shared bath with 4 rooms (up to twelve people). The apartment was in an okay place on the southwest side of the train station. But the 4 bedroom apartment was minimal with resources - very old kitchen items, poor water pressure, little warm water, not very clean facilities and no wifi.

The apartment could accommodate up to 12 people, but there was little communal space. NO seating area - living room, only a shared hall way with an old apple imac computer (about 12 years old), telephone and a bin of umbrellas. There was only one table with two chairs for eating. (It was tough to schedule cooking and eating with 4 separate rooms of people.)

The oven did not work and the burners were very hard to light. There was no spatula, cheese grater, hot water pot, bottle opener, and vegetable peeler. And the supplies that were there were very cheap, old and often difficult to use. The bathroom was not that clean and the water was hard to heat and the pressure was terrible. But the floors and the tub could have been a lot cleaner.

The owners were not around the week we stayed. And we hoped that things might have been better if they had been. The staff at the hostel (where you check in) were very blunt, no warmth and did not recall who we were when we came back to use the wifi. They actually made us feel as if we were intruding.

With all that said, we met a delightful couple of women from Asia and were glad we stayed there. We just wish the rest was better. It could be a lovely place with a little attention and care.

We do agree and apologize to this guest that some of the kitchen supplies were in need of replacement and they have since been replaced. The number of people allowed in the Acacia apartment is stated incorrectly by this guest - there are 4 double rooms in the Acacia apartment for a maximum of 8 people and not 12 people as stated in the review. At the most we have allowed up to 10 people, but only as part of a private group renting out the apartment privately and not when shared with other guests. The bathroom and common areas are cleaned and tidied up daily by our housekeeper. However, if the facilities are used and not kept in a good state by the other guests in the interim, we're afraid this may give the impression that these areas are not cleaned, which is not the case. We have very high cleanliness standards and it's a challenge to keep the shared spaces of the apartments in perfect condition since there isn't a full time presence of staff like at The Beehive. However, we're also confident that any sacrifice made for sharing in this case is made up for by the savings of being able to share a self-catering kitchen and a computer with free internet access. My husband & I are a young American living in Belgium. We made our first trip to Rome this March and stayed at The Beehive. We LOVED every bit of our stay. The shared bathrooms are not a big deal at all because they are private "just like the one's in a house" it is not like a gym locker room where all the showers are open and everyone can see in. We never had to wait to use a bathroom or shower. The food was good the receptionist was very friendly and helpful! The handmade soap is great I only wish I bought more. The atmosphere of The Beehive was just GREAT. The hotel is very quite and very clean!!! We will be going back to visit and stay at The Beehive!

My husband and I stayed in a private room one night (bathroom is shared). The rooms are nice and decent size with a sink in each room. The second night we stayed in the shared bunks because that was all that was available. The bunk room is large and clean. In general our biggest problem with the Beehive was the noise. With people coming and going and leaving their rooms at all hours to use the restroom, the noise kept us awake. It seemed we could also hear people checking in and out at the front desk.

We didn't feel that the staff was overly friendly, but they accommodated us. A great perk was the location. If you are planning on seeing as much of Rome as you can.....the Metro is a great way to do this (just two blocks away). We arrived and departed via the train, which is in the same area - so that was convenient.

Lastly, we can not say enough about Francesca. She's the chef downstairs in the cafe and we had breakfast there every morning. Her breads are homemade, all of her food organic....and it was the best cup of coffee that I've ever had. Since she is running the cafe by herself, you might have to be patient. But it's worth it. We would return to the Beehive just to have breakfast there!

Luckily stumbled upon this great place. Felt really safe for a single girl travelling alone. Only a short walk from the station and the front garden properly gated. I stayed in the dorm which slept 8 people in 4 bunk beds but was pleasantly surprised at how spacious it felt - it's quite a big room. The restaurant downstairs is lovely both for breakfast and evening meal, and I seem to remember free internet downstairs too. Best hostel I've ever stayed in and I've stayed in a few. Was only there 3 nights but met some lovely people there who I travelled with afterwareds and am still in touch with.

When we went to reserve a room for three nights at the Beehive, the hostel was full but we were offered a room in one of their nearby apartments (for 5 euro less than the hostel). Our experience at the Acacia was quite nice. The apartment is on the opposite side of the Termini train station from the hostel (so you have to drag your luggage over to the hostel to check in, then drag it back through the train station to get to the apartment (if you're traveling in a group, I recommend sending one person with passports to check in, then meet back up at the train station to head over to the apartment)). Their reservation system was down when we tried to check in, so we left the bags at the hostel and spent the afternoon at the Colesseum before returning to check in.

The Acacia is a 4-bedroom apartment on the 5th floor of an apartment building (tiny elevator that can only take two people at a time or one person with luggage). Others have noted an issue with bathroom access. Since we were traveling off-season we had two nights where we were sharing with only two other people and one night where there were four others in the apartment. Even so, that last morning there were issues with access to the bathroom.

Three of the bedrooms face the street which is fairly noisy but that's to be expected in Rome. If you are a light sleeper, request room #4 which is an interior facing room with a small balcony. The rooms are quite large with a double bed, loveseat and small table and chairs. Quite firm bed. If you are really on a budget, then having access to a more-or-less fully stocked kitchen is quite handy. There is a Mac set up in the hallway that provides Internet access (it's slow but better than nothing).

For 50 euro a night in Rome, this was an excellent value. The neighborhood isn't terribly pleasant but the location is pretty convenient being a 5-minute walk to the train station, Termini metro station and a dozen or so bus lines. Make sure you go to Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore. It's one-block from the apartment and absolutely beautiful. Discovered it on our last morning there and I wish I would have found it earlier to spend more time there. Also, if you're headed to the Vatican, the #40 bus goes directly from the train station to Piazza San Marco.

This was the best hostel in Rome. I stayed at three and this place was so quiet and so clean and good smelling and so safe feeling compared to the others. This hostel was like the best gelato.
