“High Way robbery”
Reviewed 21 October 2013

We Stayed at this hotel 13 years ago and we then liked it, because of its great location. When booking for this trip I read on their website that they had a big remodel for x millions, plus their pictures looked beautiful. We were ready to pay the hefty price for the room, because everything seemed to be perfect.
We were so disappointed when we arrived. First, everything looked the same as 13 years ago just more beat up. The carpets in the hallways are stained and smell. The room was average but nothing special.
The bathroom is dirty, small and smelly. We even paid extra for the deluxe room, we are still trying to figure out what the deluxe part is. Maybe they mean the sewage smell in the room.
We feel truly ripped off and we would not recommend this hotel, unless you get it under € 300

Stayed as part of a tour package. Cannot comment on value since I did not price the room. Our room (448) had wood laminate flooring in the large foyer area, which I liked, and carpeting in the bedroom. Lots of storage space. Located over an alley area, with some loud cycle and voice noise late in the pm, early in the am. That was disruptive to sleep.

Room generally clean, bedding nice but a heavy down comforter in duvet was furnished, no top sheet. We could not sleep with that, way too warm. Maids furnished sheets on the second day so we did not have to use the comforter. Maids were kind and attentive to any needs we had.

Marble bath with smallish vanity, no room for makeup or other personal items, and NO ELECTRICAL OUTLETS other than a low voltage shaving outlet. Could not use my curling iron in bathroom due to same and had to use an outlet near the desk to plug in. No mirror in the bedroom so did my hair blind. Makeup mirror mounted about 6 feet off the floor, not usable to the average height female. This room was clearly not designed for female travelers. Shower had a little black mold, woodwork in bath was beat up. That is something I don't want to see.

Breakfast buffet was extensive and good quality, servers were helpful if not a little hyperactive. Front desk staff helpful, doorman was exceptionally helpful and full of useful information. He should be made the concierge.

Drink prices listed on the cocktail menu for the rooftop bar were astronomical, the highest I've seen anywhere.

Room Tip: Another traveler mentioned asking for rooms in the front of the hotel. Cannot recommend rooms near t...

Great location however for price paid our room was poor at best! For premium price we were put in the back of the hotel, obviously oldest. Bath tub, toilet, and sink could be reached simultaneously! Two people could not share unless one in the shower! Blow dryer circa 1960. "Trouser press" didn't work and had to empty closet to even get to it! Door men nice. Great roof top view.

The good news... The location is great. You can walk to everything. The bad... The hotel is average at best. I travel extensively, and am able to stay at all levels of quality. However, this is simply average. Nothing compared to the Russie, Boscolo, Hassler or Intercontinental. I suggest you look at all of the above before selecting. To be fair, the hotel is clean, has a decent breakfast, etc., it is just nothing special.

We have been staying here since 1998 and enjoy the location of the hotel. Basically, its hard to get a better more central location in Rome. The hotel staff is friendly and very accommodating. If you are expecting good rooms, I would recommend asking for rooms that face Piazza de la Minerve. The back wing of the hotel rooms are really not comparable. On our last two trips to the hotel, the front desk tried to put in this rooms, only to have us reject them. The rooms have lower ceilings, odd floor plans and are nowhere near the quality of the rooms in the front of the hotel. Once we got a new room, it was a game changer. The rooms overlooked the piazza and had 11-12 foot ceilings. What a difference.

Room Tip: Get rooms in the front of the hotel, not the back

This is a nice hotel in a great location with a great rooftop bar and restaurant. But for 5 stars I would need a larger room. The rooms at this hotel compare with older hotel rooms in New York City. It was clean and comfortable, just smaller than your average hotel room.

Hotel was in a wonderful location. The front desk staff were always very friendly and helpful. Room was great but usually didn't have maid service until mid afternoon...which was ok because we were always out and about. When we did need something for the room, they were quick to service. The breakfast buffet that was included with our tour was great. The view of the piazza and back of the Pantheon was wonderful and the rooftop bar had amazing views.
