Although I associated it with writers, once among the world’s most brilliant, who’d drunk themselves into self-parody and premature death, Via Margutta is my favorite street in Rome. Whenever I’m in Rome - and admittedly it’s not that often - I make a point of walking down that beautiful, cobblestone street with its galleries and shops and looking carefully at Number 30, at the balcony where – if what Truman Capote wrote is true – his pet raven, Lola, perched on the edge of the stone balustrade and took her daily bath in a silver soup dish. Number 30 Villa Margutta does not rent out rooms, a few blocks away, on Via Dei Creci, the Hotel Mozart does. The selling point was the roof garden, and it did not disappoint. Lovely, intimate, three-level garden has rooftop bar with magnificent views.
The room was somewhat small, but immaculate, with good linens and a nice fresco over the very comfortable bed. Two lights were out, including my reading light. The management said they'd replace the bulbs, but did not. And neither my husband nor I could figure out in three days how to regulate the water temperature in the jazuzzi shower. The management didn't help there, either. But small points, really, when compared to the perfect location, which by the way, is across the street from a music conservatory from which (during school hours) emanate sounds of opera singers practicing Mozart. And don't let the thought of rolling your suitcase down a cobblestone street bother you. The entrance is just a few steps from the Corso.
