There must be nicer places in Rome for the money. Road outside was noisey, room was shabby and all felt a bit disorganised.

We stayed at this bed and breakfast for 2 nights and found it to be an average or an 'OK' place. We were picked up from the airport by an impatient driver (this was arranged through the B & B) who seemed 'put off' that our plane was 20 min. late. He charged us 10 Euro more than the agreed upon price of 40 Euros. He waited for a tip. This put us off a bit. (We opted to take the train back to the airport.)
The property does have a very convenient location. We were able to walk everywhere. As two female travellers, we did feel safe here. The room was very clean. And the courtyard that our room looked into was very pretty.
Breakfasts were decent. A cup of coffee. A piece of bread wtih jam or butter. A glass of juice. A bowl of cereal.
Our main concern was amount of noise in our room. On both nights, we were kept awake by other guests. On our last night, we could hear (like they were standing next to us!) a bunch of girls heading out on the town. They were loud until after 2 am, and returned back to the property at 6 am. For tired travellers, it was a bit much. Another guest came out and asked them to be quiet. So, as a bit of advice---don't necessairly expect a quiet night's sleep! The walls are very, very thin!
Overall, though we were pleased. But, we probably wouldn't stay there again.

This was a clean, safe, secure, and cozy bed "and breakfast" which is in a great location. The owners are very friendly and welcoming. They provided us with a map, tips and directions for Rome's biggest attractions. It is called a "bed and breakfast" however, breakfast is not provided unless you pay an extra fee. We didn't mind since there are many little coffee shops around the area. The main attractions are within walking distance (15 minute walk to the colliseum)...if you don't want to walk, there are bus stops all around that will take you to the centre area (probably a 5 minute bus ride). I would recommend this B & B to others who are looking for somewhere clean and safe to sleep while they are exploring Rome. I do not recommend this B & B to "light" sleepers, since there is a lot of traffic noise that carries on day and night. Overall, I liked this B & B and thought it was offered at a reasonable price.

We just arrived back after four nights at Roman and Italian B&B. The B&B is on the first floor of a fairly typical Roman residential building (a bit scruffy, but no major problems) right next to Manzoni tube station, to the east of the city centre.

Unfortunately, Manzoni station is currently closed for improvements, so the nearest station is San Giovanni, about 5-10 mins walk away.

However, due to the good weather, we decided to walk to the sites most of the time. The colosseum is the closest of the main attractions, about 10-15 minutes walk away; the Vatican is the furthest - about an hour away on foot.
There are plenty of small shops, bars etc near to the B&B.

The B&B consists of an office room surrounded by the 3 bedrooms. 2 of the rooms share a bathroom - we were quoted 50 euros per night for one of these. The room we stayed in had its own bathroom. We paid 70 euro per night. This did not include breakfast, which for 5 euro per person per day can be taken in the bar / cafe next door. This is very good value for a pretty central spot in Rome.

The office room has a computer in it, with free internet access for guests. Unfortunately, for at least 3 of the 4 days we were there, either the computer would not switch on, or the wireless internet connection was not working. This was no problem for us as we didn't go to Rome to sit at a computer, but it was lucky that we were not relying on it for reservations etc.

The room itself was spacious and clean, and Marco (owner) was kind enough to lend us an iron (no board) for the duration of our stay.

The only slight difficulty we had was making arrangements before our arrival. Having confirmed our booking by email, Marco offered to pick us up from the airport for 45 euro (one way). However, I had read somewhere that the Italian government had set limits on taxi fares from Ciampino airport at 30 euro.
So I emailed Marco back, assuming that he thought we were arriving at Fiumicino airport (a bit further away), to check if it would still be 45 euro from Ciampino. He seemed to take offence at this, and I fear that there was a bit of a language barrier between us, so I decided that we would just take our chances with a taxi from the airport.

In the end we paid 57 euro for the taxi, so opted for Marco's offer on the return journey.

We had planned to stay in Tivoli on our last night night and just wing it for a hotel when we got there.....Tivoli was a dirty unwelcoming town so we kept driving on to Rome. After three hours of driving looking for a hotel we pulled up out the front of Best Western Presidetial, I Think, on Via Emanuele Filiberto. This story needs a plug for them too. They didnt have a room but actually recommended Marco's B&B and rang him for us to book a reservation without notice...thank you! Marco walked down to the hotel to greet us and made sure we had a safe place to park our car and then took us back to his B&B - Sams Rooms. This is about 10pm mind you. All beyond the call of duty. Marco showed us our room, which was a freshly renovated, beautifully presented room with a seperate private bathroom with A/c, TV, Fridge etc. Equivilent to 3-4star hotel in my travelling experience. There are two things a traveller needs most, one is a good shower and the other a good bed. Marco's room had both, in fact the best shower in our 4 weeks of travelling!
Marco and Maddie were wonderful and very friendly, they also supplied a good selection for breakfast which is rare in Rome.
I would highly recommend this B&B to anyone heading to Rome. Drop Marco and Maddie a line from [----]Marco and Maddie, if you read this, Thanks again from your Australian vistors on October 3 2006!

As a graduate student in archaeology from the USA, I have travelled all over Europe for academic programs, excavations, and of course, for pleasure. My trip to Italy this time happily included all three! Initially I booked with Maddy and Marco to stay in Rome before a program began with a fellow student. We had both searched many different websites and guidebooks for that "perfect" place that fit our budget as well as our status as two women travelling alone with a desire to get around the city sans taxi. When we found the Roman and Italian, our search ended! Maddy and Marco devote their time to two different bed and breakfasts, the Roman and Italian and the Sam. Our first stay with Maddy and Marco was at the Roman and Italian which FAR exceeded our expectations. Not only was the B&B in an excellent location to the metro stop and sites such as the Roman Forum and the Coloseum, but it was safe, quiet, and quite simply the most beautifully decorated european B&B I have stayed in. Particularly noteworthy is the quality of the shared bathroom, which was spotlessly cleaned daily and the quality of the Euro-style breakfast. Although many Americans are accustomed to a larger fare at breakfast we found that the excellent coffee, capuccino, and juices coupled with toast and cereal was really quite wonderful in comparison to our experiences elsewhere in Europe. We discovered later that the breakfasts were not a required aspect of Italian B&B's, but an accomodation that Maddy and Marco personally believed was important for the comfort of the guests.

In addition to the appearance of the B&B, Maddy and Marco go out of their way to make each traveller feel comfortable in their temporary "home". Each morning, at Roman and Italian we were greeted by a smiling Maddy, who refused to let us help her clean up or serve ourselves coffee, although she had just undergone heart surgery! The couple was always ready with advice for great places to eat and to see --We were never disappointed with their recommendations! The sheer energy and personality of this young couple give Roman and Italian B&B and their other property, Sam, the kind of atmosphere that everyone can appreciate.

In fact, the best example I can give for how much this stay was appreciated is that at the end of my program, when I had a few more days in the city, I couldn't dial the phone fast enough to book another stay with Maddy and Marco. My stay at the Sam was just as pleasurable and comfortable as the first. Marco helped me get to the Fiumicino airport at 5 am for a small fee (especially compared to the taxi fee that is normal in Rome for such a trip). He even checked to make sure I woke up on time, knowing that I was worried about getting to the airport, and brought me some coffee! This is the sort of personalized service and help that one doesn't expect from a hotel, let alone a B&B, and yet, once again, Maddy and Marco deliver the best!

Thank you, Maddy and Marco for making this summer a truly pleasurable experience!!

Love to my new friends,
Stephanie Smith

  • Liked — Best service I've had in any B&B in Europe! Personalized accomodations, great help organizing what to see, etc.
  • Disliked — Unfortunately the metro stop that is literally across the street was closed for construction, but there was another stop within short walking distance, so that didn't really slow us down much.
  • Tips/Secrets — Just like anywhere you travel in Europe, remember that you are not in your own culture/country. Don't expect everything to stay the same or the way that you're used to! What's the fun in travelling if not to experience different ways of life, marvelous food, and rich histories different from your own? Sit back, relax, enjoy!

Our experience with the Roman & Italian B & B in May 2006 was wonderful. The B & B is easy to find and is in a good location. There is a nearby ATM, and several small take-out restaurants near-by. There is not a sign but it is easy to find and Marco will meet you at the front. We found our room to be VERY clean and quiet if the windows were closed. Our room had been decorated nicely and the bed was more comfortable than most that we stayed in during our 2 weeks in Italy.

The shared bathroom was small, like most in Italy but was clean and timing/sharing was never a problem as there are only 2 rooms that share the bathroom. Breakfast was good and was enhanced by the times we were able to chat with Maddy about her life.

Marco & Maddy run 2 B&Bs and don't live at either one. This wasn't an issue for us but it does mean that you must let them know your time of arrival in advance. When our flight was bumped and we arrived 5 hours later in Rome, we had to wait a few hours to be let into the B & B. Also, like many B&Bs payment is in cash only and must be made upon arrival. This is just something to be aware of and was not at all a hassle.

Last but not least, we found Marco and Maddy to be very kind people who were willing to go the extra mile to make their guests happy. Maddy arrived early 2 mornings to make sure we were able to eat breakfast before our early departure as we had made reservations for a few museums early in the day. Upon asking for a restaurant recommendation, Marco explained that, unlike most owners of B & Bs, he has refused taking a commission from the restaurants that he recommends for his guests and instead has asked those restaurants to pass on the savings to us. We found this true one evening when we visited a restaurant that he recommended. Although the restaurant was not what we were looking for, they did give us a discount. Additionally, although we were not impressed with the restaurant, we do not blame Marco as we did not explain what we were looking for.

We found this B&B to be a great deal for the price and we were very satisfied with our stay. We would definitely stay there again. Marco and Maddy are wonderful hosts!
