“Clean, functional, free water and wifi - OK”
Reviewed 1 July 2014

Sometimes it's the little things that count. After being so fed up of expensive hotels that charge crazy amounts for wifi access, it's nice to walk into somewhere unpretentious like the Fenix and find not only free (and good) wifi, but that the stock of bottled water in the fridge is complimentary too.

I stayed two nights at the Fenix on business. I can't comment on value for money as I didn't pay for the room. But the room was very well cleaned and maintained, old-school but not depressingly so, the service was friendly, and the location isn't so far from the city centre that you couldn't use it as a base for doing something touristy, using the metro (10 minutes walk) or nearby bus services.

The only downside was breakfast. The choice was not bad (scrambled eggs, OK if they're fresh, ham and cheese, bread, yogurts, freshly cooked sweet pastries) but on both occasions when I came down to breakfast - at two different times - there was no cleared table to sit at in the small downstairs restaurant. On the first morning, I joined four other people eating their breakfast standing up, because there just weren't any free seats at all. On the second morning I got a seat at a table which hadn't been cleared from the previous guests.

There are a few dinner options up the hill on Corso Trieste, again about 10 minutes walk away.

Overall I wouldn't mind staying here again, as long as I time my breakfast right to be able to eat it in comfort!

We, me and my wife, stay in the hotel three nights. And we were sutisfied. The location is nice and quiet and seemed to be safe. We used the B1 subway for transport to the downtown. The subway stop is around 400 m of walk. The room was clean and with air conditioning. When I saw the hotel for first time I was little bit disappointed because the hotel building did not look well (older concrete structure). But the interior was very nice. The breakfast was good and tasty. I would have only one suggestion: some vegetable would be perfect for a breakfast. The staff was friendly and helpful (English speaking as well).

I recently had to stay near the Canadian Embassy for Passport problems (stolen) and have to say this hotel was really helpful in every possible way. They made my stay consoling and called, booked, everything so that I would be comfortable and not upset as I was when I arrived. The room was tiny but comfortable. Prices are very reasonable.

Our booking for Hotel Fenix in Rome was a last moment one as there had been a change in itinerary. I had booked this hotel basis feedbacks on TripAdvisor and I will also recommend this hotel.

I, primarily needed the comfort of being in a safe location within Rome, being a family trip ( I must admit here that my prior feedbacks from other people visiting Rome had not been great owing to some unhappy occurrences) but also stay connected with the station and other important locations through good public transport connectivity. Hotel Fenix provided both. Rome was found to be an extremely crowded city with so many tourists coming in each day and the number of immigrant hawkers, I felt the location of the hotel to be a relief from the hustle. Breakfast was decent enough and the staffs at the reception were very helpful in providing necessary tourist information with maps and transport guides. All this at a very reasonable price and the rooms, though not outstanding but are very clean and gives a homely feel. The bus and the tram stop is practically in front of the hotel door and moving around is never a hassle.

Stayed for two nights recently. We found the staff to be friendly and some spoke English quite well. Our room was clean and the breakfasts were good. My only complaint was the scrambled eggs could have been hotter, but there was a good selection of pastries and meats and cheeses. We knew tge hotel was in a quiet area. The bus was two blocks away and it went to all the areas that we wanted to visit. Always be aware of pick-pockets that like crowded buses.

Having read previous reviews I thought I'd sacrifice location for what seemed to be a nice, boutique style hotel. Upon arrival the dogs were behind reception which, as a dog lover myself, I'm not adverse to but I don't think it creates a great impression. There's a damp smell which is masked by the very strong room odourises strategically placed around the lobby. The rooms are tired and the whole place needs a re-vamp especially when charging £130 a night. I've stayed in much nicer hotels for less than that in London. The manager was pretty rude too although the rest of the staff were very friendly. My advice, chose somewhere closer to the centre and spend a little more. However, the eggs at breakfast were very nice :)
