Sometimes it's the little things that count. After being so fed up of expensive hotels that charge crazy amounts for wifi access, it's nice to walk into somewhere unpretentious like the Fenix and find not only free (and good) wifi, but that the stock of bottled water in the fridge is complimentary too.
I stayed two nights at the Fenix on business. I can't comment on value for money as I didn't pay for the room. But the room was very well cleaned and maintained, old-school but not depressingly so, the service was friendly, and the location isn't so far from the city centre that you couldn't use it as a base for doing something touristy, using the metro (10 minutes walk) or nearby bus services.
The only downside was breakfast. The choice was not bad (scrambled eggs, OK if they're fresh, ham and cheese, bread, yogurts, freshly cooked sweet pastries) but on both occasions when I came down to breakfast - at two different times - there was no cleared table to sit at in the small downstairs restaurant. On the first morning, I joined four other people eating their breakfast standing up, because there just weren't any free seats at all. On the second morning I got a seat at a table which hadn't been cleared from the previous guests.
There are a few dinner options up the hill on Corso Trieste, again about 10 minutes walk away.
Overall I wouldn't mind staying here again, as long as I time my breakfast right to be able to eat it in comfort!
