Stayed for 3 nights and found staff to be very helpful with any tourist info we needed, breakfast was good and fresh and the rooms very clean. Location is a little away from the main centre but the metro is on the doorstep and takes you to everywhere you want to go at such a good price just go to any tobacconist and get a day ticket great value. Would stay here again.

Dear Valued Guest,
I was particularly happy to read your comments about your recent stay because our biggest satisfaction will be to maintain the hospitality promise: to let you have a pleasant and comfortable stay.

Regarding your assertion about the distance from the Down Town area, doubtfully you will be able to find Hotels more central located than the Holiday Inn Express Rome San Giovanni, but please remind the prices will be definitely higher. High percentages of our Guests are pleased of our service with a perfect balance between supply and prices and not least please remind the Hot American Breakfast Buffet is always complimentary in any kind of room rate.

Looking forward to welcoming you back I beg to accept my best wishes.

We stayed for 3 nights at this hotel in April 2014.

PROS:
The hotel is fairly modern. The rooms are clean. The wifi works great (you do have to pay for it daily, though). The hotel is SUPER close to both the rail (Roma Tuscolano station) and metro station (Furio Camillo station) making it very easy to get to/from Rome and to/from the Airport. The complimentary breakfast is pretty good; they have a good spread including scrambled eggs, bacon, fruits, yogurt, coffee, cereal, pastries, toast, juice, milk, granola and it's available until 10:30 am (for those who like to sleep in a little). The beds are comfortable and the bathrooms are stocked with complimentary soap/shampoo. The courtyard is quite pleasant in the evenings as is the hotel bar.

CONS:
The neighborhood surrounding the hotel is a little sketchy. The walls on the surrounding buildings are covered with graffiti. I was not comfortable walking around there alone after dark. I found the front desk staff to be a little rude; particularly the women. Room 148 had the most unpleasant smell coming from the bathroom and the toilet water was running during the entire stay. It was loud and interrupted our sleep. You can hear the trains pass (even from the rooms facing the courtyard) so don't plan on sleeping in much. The rooms are so warm! We had to open the windows every night because the heat was unbearable and we had no hot water the last night of our stay.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the courtyard - less noise from the passing trains.

Dear Valued Guest,
Let me express my gratitude to the PROS tips given to all Readers and you assert the in-room rate always complimentary Hot American Breakfast Buffet is a great valued added to the money spend in choosing our Hotel among all structures.

I’m sorry to read you had some problem regarding the train clank during the night, but at time of your trip, in April is forbidden by the Rome’s City Council to let the air condition start due to observance of Air Pollution Laws.

Due to sleeping with the opened window, you could hear the trains passing by, but I assure you all rooms are furnished with double glazed windows to avoid outside noise.

Please note the working hours of the trains are from 06:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m.

Regarding the dripping coming from the water closed, I’m deeply dismayed about this issue but if you told to the Reception Desk, we could have send immediately the Maintenance or provide a new room.

The area is a residential district usually very quiet, and it is absolutely safe at day and night time and concerning the graffiti, the centre of Rome is like any other capital city of Europe, with the striking conflict between the historic monuments and the modern life.

Please accept my apologize once again and do not hesitate to contact me if you wish to discuss anything in further detail, please feel free to do so. Looking forward to welcoming you next time you will be in Rome, I remain with kind regards.

Stayed for 3 nights at the Holiday Inn Express 4 - 7 April 2014. Hotel is in an ideal location to explore the sights of Rome as it is only a very short walk to the Metro and bus stops. The hotel staff were very helpful with directions and advice for travel and a 3 day metro ticket for unlimited travel was really good value at 16 euros and so easy to use. Hotel was clean and room was basic with some noise from the train line that is at the back of the hotel. Breakfast was lovely with so much to choose from and staff helpful. Served from 6.30 - 10.30 which was very useful when you wanted an early start or a bit of a relaxed morning. Cereal, fruit, hot food, pastries tea coffee and fruit juices all on offer and as its a buffet you can have a full breakfast to set you up for the day. I notice that a previous review mentioned the lack of hot water. We also had a warm shower on the first morning, cold the second and hot on the third morning. Staff said that their was a whole hotel problem that they were looking into. Flight home was late evening and hotel happy to look after luggage so that we could enjoy a last day of exploring without any extra expense. Vatican City approx 25 -30 mins away on Metro, Spanish Steps 15 - 20 mins, on the red line which takes you to most of the popular tourist attractions. Colosseum about 15 mins away on the no 85 bus which stops outside and bus travel is included in the metro ticket. Supermarket and bus stop 2 mins away from hotel which was very useful.

Room Tip: rooms at rear of hotel may hear trains passing as nearby main line station at rear of hotel.

Dear Valued Guest,
Let me thank you for your positive comment about your recent stay with us and I’m happy to read you enjoyed your stay.

Regarding the lack of hot water on the second day, I do apologize for the disruption but the boilers stopped working during the night before and the maintenance keep them again on duty immediately as soon as we knew about the problem (within 30 minutes).

I take the opportunity to explain to all readers all the Hotel rooms are equipped with double glazed window allowing a deep sleep even to those rooms facing the railways.

Please accept my apologize once again and do not hesitate to contact me in case of further detail. Looking forward to welcoming you next time you will be in Rome, I remain with kind regards.

Just back from a two night trip for our first time in Rome.
The hotel is very easy to get to from the airport with the mainline station next door. For getting into Rome the stop for bus 85 (best way to Colosseum) is 5 minutes away, and the metro 10 minutes.
The rooms are nice and reasonably spacious, breakfast is fine considering it's free, and everything is clean and modern.
For eating, Pastarito across the junction with the main road is the best value, and the food there is much better than the appearance of the place would lead you to believe (show them the hotel map for a 10% discount too).
Now the bad points:
The rooms are stiflingly hot, and if you open the window you have to endure the 80s music from the courtyard below until late into the night, and then the noise from trains passing 100 metres behind the hotel (and hooting!) all through the night.
The AC didn't work (I read somewhere it's not allowed in winter?), so unbroken sleep was impossible.
On our first morning there was no hot water. We complained to reception, but they were pretty disinterested and just replied "yes we know"!! They took our room number, but no compensation or any kind of gesture was made, only muttering that it 'should be fixed in a few minutes'. This wasn't much consolation as we had already had our stone-cold showers and breakfast and were heading out. If this is their attitude with (allegedly) one of their most valued customers (Platinum PC member) then I dread to think how they treat non-PC member guests.
We won't be returning in a hurry. I guess the hot water issue is not normal, but I don't like hotels where the staff think they are more important than the customers, and a good night's sleep was virtually impossible.

Dear Mr. Alden,
please accept my apologies for any inconvenience occurred during your stay with us because we are not authorized to let start the air condition until the 15th of May accordingly to the Rome’s City Council air Pollution Law, as communicated from the Reception desk.

Concerning the lacks of hot water service during the morning it came from an electric black-out happened during the night before but as soon as we have been informed of the problem we immediately call the maintenance to solve the problem within 30 minutes.

Let me assure you that what happened in your case is not typical of Holiday Inn Express Rome San Giovanni’s level of customer service. We continue to be committed to providing you and all of our Customers with the highest standards of service in the hospitality industry.

I can see from your survey even a nice comment about the room: nice and reasonably spacious, breakfast is fine considering it's free, and everything is clean and modern. Don’t you think you have been to uncompromising rating us only with 2 stars?

Please accept my apologize once again and do not hesitate to contact me if you wish to discuss anything in further detail, please feel free to do so.
Looking forward to welcoming you next time you will be in Rome, I remain with kind regards.

A lovely hotel with all you could need, rooms clean and staff very helpful and friendly. I would stay here again although this hotel is little out of area it's easy to get around due to bus, train & taxis being about with some fab pizza pasta places local to the hotel. In the evening the hotel bar is a wonderful place to have a beer and unwind after a long day sightseeing.

After driving into Rome and dropping off the car, we arrived at the hotel. Check in was easy. The room was nice for three days/two nights. Nothing fancy: bed, hanging clothes area/shelves, desk, tv and bathroom. Our room window/view opened up to the hotel's courtyard and we were right above the breakfast area (it was a little noisy during breakfast hours but we were up early anyway). Breakfast had a large selection but seating was limited on the weekend (as they were very busy!). Good food and coffee. Also the hotel offered an appetizer/drink time in the evenings, except on Sunday. The appetizers and drinks were yummy and the bartender was very nice and spoke good English. This stay wasn't about a deluxe hotel room just convenient to things to see and do in Rome. The hotel is a short walk to the train about 5-10 minutes. I'm not sure how close the hotel is to sites, as we got lost leaving the Coliseum to the hotel. But around the San Giovanni area, we felt safe, as many locals were walking around during the daytime and at night.
Tips-
-the train is easy and an inexpensive way to get around Rome. i highly recommend it, if your wanting to see a lot of the sites and your still going to have to walk some.
-don't recommend driving a car in Rome, as it is crazy
-highly recommend Ristorante l'Isola, a restaurant a couple steps from the hotel
-if your wanting a tour, I recommend Enjoy Rome (viator.com). They offer many tours of Rome and other cities. Great tours and it's well worth the money. Recommend this especially for a Vatican tour, you will skip the lines!
-if you can, stay at least 3 or more days in Rome, as there is so much to see and do. You can spend at least 2 full days sightseeing in Rome and then maybe take a day trip to the Amalfi Coast through a tour company.
