Holiday Inn Express Hotels in Europe are somewhat predictable and this property is no exception. Typical HIE. Rooms are small, but clean. This property is reasonably priced as well, probably due to its working class neighborhood location. It has a nice business center along with a very nice outdoor courtyard area along with a bar and lounge area. The breakfast is presented very nicely with a good selection that should be enough for anyone. It is about a 10 minute walk to the Metro and if you are a good walker, about 30 minutes to the Colosseum. We like that it is out of the touristy areas and it has more the flavor of Italy that we appreciate. About three blocks away is a very nice traditional Italian restaurant C'era Una Volta. This hotel is near the train station and you can hear the trains as they rumble through. However, we did not find them disturbing.

Room tip: There are no good views but some of the rooms have balconies that face the courtyard

We stayed here for 3 nights in late April 2014. We had showed up to a B & B that did not have our reservation for some reason even though I had it printed in my hand and we had to find other arrangements last minute.
I quickly booked the three nights with IHG points, showed up 1 hour later for check in and the front desk staff greeted us as if they were expecting us for months! They recognized our Platinum IHG status and were helpful with explaining the services the hotel offered.
Our room was very good sized and we received one with a balcony facing the courtyard they have.
This hotel has air conditioning that works VERY well and would probably come in handy with the hot summers.
The location is about 6 blocks from the Metro train and only about 2-3 blocks from a bus stop that takes you directly to the Coliseum and the main Termini station.
The breakfast was very good. Hot food, pastries, coffee/cappuccino machine, fresh water, juice, etc. If you have ever had the holiday inn express breakfast in the states, this a certainly a notch better and tasted more like real food.
The cleaning staff did a great job cleaning our room every day.
I don't know what more you ask for than a good size room, very clean, helpful staff, great value for point redemption and normal rates and close to the main transportation lines!
If we ever come back to Rome (especially in the summer) this place provides a GREAT value and experience.

Upon our arrival in Rome, we quickly settled into our hotel. The rooms are spacious, extremely clean and the hotel staff very helpful. The breakfasts were amazing! Location is great; near the trainstation, metro and bus.

Stayed at this hotel in April. Clean, comfortable beds. Basic, but I think that is Europe. Trains run right behind the hotel and are noisy during the day/evening, but didn't bother us at night. A/C not on yet, but again, that is Europe. Breakfast had a good variety of things-cold meat, cheese, breads, pastries, fruit, yogurt, cereal, juice, eggs. Front desk staff spoke English and were extremely helpful. Hotel is a bit out of the way, but not too far from the metro, and serviced by buses 85 and 16. Not many choices for food in the area. Pizza restaurant around the corner on Tuscolana was cheap and good. If arriving by train from the cruise port, you can get off the train at the station right behind the hotel. (Tuscolana) No need to go all the way in to Termini, and take the metro back. It was easy to take the train from the cruise port, but the train was very busy and we had to stand all the way. We also used the hotel shuttle service and were very pleased with the service.

I gave it a 4/5 because the walls were pretty thin. We didn't have neighbors until the last 2 nights and they were very loud until 2 in the morning. Otherwise breakfast was great...they had drink machines, eggs(watery), bacon, tons of breads, yogurt, cereal and apples. It was better than a continental breakfast in the states, where they usually just serve donuts and coffee. O yes and there was a weird sewage smell in the lounge/ check-in area. Otherwise it was a great place to stay, near the trains (that can take you directly to the airport for 8 euros) and the metro, which can take you directly into the heart of Rome for touristy things.

Dear Valued Guest,
Let us first thank you for choosing the Holiday Inn Express Rome San Giovanni because we know you have a plenty of choices when comes time for lodging.

We are proud to let the Guests feel like “Home away from Home” because we are persuaded this should be the most important target to be reached from all the Hoteliers.

As you wrote the Hot American Breakfast Buffet is always in room rate included and it offer a huge variety of foods able to satisfy any kind of Guests’ require.

I do apologize regarding the noise coming from the room adjacent yours during the last two nights, but you should contact the Reception immediately and we would call them to stop.
Please note the walls are not as thin as you suppose, because are all sound-proofed, but if some people are impolite it could not be added to the Hotel.

Regarding the weird sewage smell, it came from the maintenance works made by the City Council along the street and it was spread out in all the area, but I’m happy to inform you this kind of inconvenience has been definitely solved the day after.

We are proud to be your hotel of choice in Rome and look forward to welcoming you back.
