We had a wonderful time with Paula and Carlos. We started off with Paula and Carlos explored different options with us for our preferences and then put together a menu for us on the spot and then we bought all the ingredients in the market and at a few nearby shops. They took time to show some of their favorite items and local items. We selected to have a fish dish and we had some very fresh, delicious, in-season Red Tuna from the Mediterranean Sea as our main dish. We had fun with the fishmonger and with the other vendors.
We started shopping around 9:30 am and got to their nearby kitchen around 11:00 am. We made home made pasta and clams, a side of zuchinni, a side of cooked fennel, Red Tuna, and panna cotta with a sauce made from fresh strawberries. We were involved in all the dishes and learned lots of techniques and insights into how to cook in the Italian style. Paula and Carlos are definitely experts and great cooks.
About half way through, they pulled out some ham, cheese, bread and some juice and we had a delicious snack. They drizzled some olive oil over the bread and it was heaven. They make their own olive oil and they also do a class where they give an introduction to Olive Oil.
The location was beautiful. It is a fully stocked, spacious kitchen and they have a great view of the Piazza below. It was fun to wander over the window and watch life happen out on the piazza.
Paula and Carlos were easy to talk to and made the event enjoyable and fun.
The food was wonderful and we could barely walk out of there after eating so much. They even let us taste some of their homemade gelato. We finished around 2:30 pm.
We highly recommend this if you are looking for an experience different from the usual tourist sights. It gave us a taste of what it might be like to live in Rome, shop at the local markets and make authentic Italian food.
