Eataly is not a typical restaurant as tourists would expect, but it serves some of the best Italian dishes one could find in Rome. I have been to “Carne” a few times, where they serve both beef and fish, and to a couple of their other restaurants. My friends and I always enjoy the food, beer and wine. What we have a problem with every time is the service. While the kitchen endeavors to provide their best recipes, there’s something between it and the customer’s table that does not work right and needs to be fixed by the management - the waiters. Their approach towards clients is far from being appropriate. Some of the reasons are the following: some hot dishes are served at low temperature. Hitting them up takes a long time, and by the time they return to the table it’s dessert time. If a group orders different dishes, they are prepared in a different timing, and they are served as they are finished, which means that 2 or more people around a table are likely not to have their dishes at the same time, and some may eat cold food, or just eat alone while others will wait for their orders. If you order a starter (antipasto), it will not necessarily be served before your main course. Unspeakably, it may be server together with the main course, or even more disturbing, after your main course is served. Sitting can also be an issue. Once, when we arrived, most tables were free, we chose one, but the waiter, despite our insistence, refused to let us sit where we wanted. Attracting the attention of a waiter is not obvious. If they are not serving your table they hardly come to check if you’re fine. Paying the bill is not easy either. Last time we felt like standing up and departing, as there was no one around to bring us the bill. There’s a clear need of proper training. I hope the management takes action to bring the waiters to similar level as the kitchen staff, and I’ll be looking forward to an appropriate service next time I return to Carne.
