We arrived at our first European hotel stay today (Villa Aurelia) and checked into our room. It was nice but just a room and a bathroom, with a little tiny plastic shower. Free wi-fi computer to use in the lobby. Just a 20-minute walk to the Vatican. Unfortunately, as this was just our two night introduction to Rome to “recover” from the redeye plane trip and we had not planned a Vatican visit this weekend. It is very far from the termini -21€ trip or a Metro plus bus plus walking. It does not give you the flavor of the city of Rome because you are out in the suburbs.
We took a walk around the neighborhood and saw a beautiful view of St Peters. However, we also saw dumpsters—4 along almost every block, on both sides of the streets, overflowing with garbage bags. Garbage bags were also just left out on any corner, and graffiti was everywhere. Well, there were lots of multistoried apartments and condos in that neighborhood after all. We finally found a restaurant to eat at and then went to the grocery store and bought food for the evening snack.
Despite that, we had a very good stay. The breakfast had large fresh croissants!!!! Yoghurt!! Great coffee! but the only thing my husband could eat (sicne he can’t eat starch – diabetes -- ) was the cheese and ham slices (processed) but we were expecting that in the hotels. What we did not expect was that the group that was staying there (we had seen their bus) was composed of handicapped people who had come from all over Italy to receive the Pope’s blessing and they had been part of the crowd on Saturday at the Vatican. We talked to a man at our table (we accidentally sat at one of the group’s table, but it worked out fine, everyone was very friendly) who spoke a little English who said it had been a “magic moment” seeing the Pope. Very exciting to hear that.
Later we stayed at a hotel downtown Rome and felt more of the excitement of the city. Despite that, this is a good place to stay if you are going to the Vatican.

People who book this hotel should realize that it is primarily a conference center for one of the many ecclesiastical colleges in Rome. The guest rooms accommodate conferences and meetings associated with the college. When they aren't full, they rent out the rooms to tourists. But they do very little else.

Most of the rooms are pretty basic. Think a very clean college dorm room. Reception area was very welcoming and helpful.

The big problem was the dining room. It is a large, nicely appointed space, and the breakfast is predictable European continental: sweet breads; dry breads; cereals; innocuous cheeses and sliced meats. Horrible coffee and juices coming out of machines. The dining room was invariably understaffed, however, and the poor server trying to juggle everything was frantic and frequently abrasive.

Adjacent to that space is a nicely appointed bar that was NEVER OPEN. Opening out of the bar is a terrace with spectacular views of the dome of St. Peters. We were in Rome for the canonization of John Paul II and John xxiii, and you would have thought they would have planned ahead for the pilgrims. But they didn't.

Because there are no restaurants to speak of in the neighborhood, many of us took to buying food and wine at a local market and bringing it back to have a picnic on the terrace.

Well, the dining room attendants went ballistic. To give them credit, they were overworked, and they didn't want to have to clean up after pilgrim picnics on their terrace. But needless to say, our hopes for a pleasant meal with the duomo of St. Peters in the background were thwarted.

This was one of the busiest weekends you can possibly imagine in Rome--with the canonization of two Popes--and this place didn't plan ahead.

Bottom line: if all you are looking for is basic accommodations with a friendly front desk and good cleaning of a basic room, you won't be disappointed.

But be warned: this establishment isn't about making its guests welcome. They'll sell you a room, they'll keep it clean, and they're happy to call you a taxi.

Room Tip: Don't get your hopes up.

Amazing food.
Staff is nice and helpful, the all building is clean. It is not luxurious or anything, but it is a good hotel. It has a really cool location since you can seen from the balcony S. Peter's Cathedral and it is safe because it is up on a hill (keep in mind that if you are coming by bus that you have to climb a hill ;) So ask to the taxi, if youre driven there, to enter and leave you up!)

This is a nice hotel, not expensive, easy to find buses to Vatican and some other places. The staff are very kind and cooperative. I feel very comfortable and safe staying in this hotel. The only problem is to reach the hotel lobby on foot is a bit too tired; like climbing slope of a hill.
