Lured in off the street and should have known better... pizza was awful... mixed seafood dish was horribly over cooked, over priced, full of bones, terrible flavor. Even the grilled veggies were awful. My son didn’t eat his entire meal, nor did I, so we left hungry after spending 170 euros for 4 people.

• We recently returned from another great holiday in the Eternal City where, for 10 out of our 11 nights stay in Rome, we enjoyed our evening meals at the Il Ristoro dal Patriota situated in the Piazza dell’ Accademia di San Luca 76, and within 60 metres of the Trevi Fountain.
• To the undiscerning eye Il Patriota may appear a bit gloomy and unwelcoming – this is far from the truth however. The subdued interior depicts the mode of the era of around the mid-late 1800s when Giuseppe Garibaldi, the famous Italian patriot and soldier, with his army of 1000 Red Shirts, greatly contributed to the unification of Italy. Garibaldi is considered one of the greatest generals of modern times and one of Italy's "fathers of the fatherland".
• The redshirts worn by the waiters at Il Patriota represent Garibaldi’s soldiers while the long dresses of the waitresses are similar to those worn by the women-folk of that era.
• Each evening we were treated to excellent service by highly efficient, extremely friendly and helpful waitresses and waiters. Over the ten days our dinners comprised a wide selection of tasty, well-prepared and nicely presented Italian dishes. My husband even venturing to try a selection from the fresh seafood cabinet inside the restaurant – which h says was excellent. I preferred the Saltimbocca, a fried chicken dish (Roman style), lots of different pasta dishes - the lasagne was superb. While we were at it, we sampled most of the beautiful desserts and of course tested/tasted much wine – Chianti and Frascatti being the most popular. An ‘occasional’ whisky (me). My husband, when he discovered he couldn’t get a Strega (not stocked) was persuaded to try Vecchia Romagna an Italian brandy. This went down so well with him that one evening the bar staff presented my husband with the remains (almost half a litre) of the 1 litre bottle of the brandy they’d been serving him from! No ‘nips or drams’ measures in this bar (and in many others in Rome) – when the waiter thought you had a real good measure, only then was the bottle withdrawn – and generally left on the table. The Vecchia Romagna travelled well to Scotland and there’s still a tipple or two left! Saluté Il Patriota!
• The combination of delicious food, good wine, the friendliness and efficiency of all the staff made for a delightful, happy and informal atmosphere which we enjoyed immensely. Coupled with this was the unique and splendid background music from the outstanding harpist Angela Lavino whom we’d made friends with on our previous visit in 2013. Angela is a wonderfully talented harpist – ask her to play “Con te Partiro” an Italian song – music by Sartori, Italian lyrics by Quarantotto; singer Andrea Bocelli wrote and sings the English lyrics; and ask her to play the beautifully haunting melody ‘Deborah’s Theme’ from the film “C’era una Volta in America” (Once Upon a Time in America). Stunning music.
• We have to thank most sincerely Noemi, Monica, Anna, Fabio, Gianluca, Kevin, Raphael and the boss – Cornado, not forgetting our harpist Angela for their warm and friendly hospitality and for making our Roman holiday another enjoyable experience.
• Dining in the restaurant each evening I was very aware of the courtesy and excellent service extended to all diners, of all ages as every member of staff went out of their way to ensure diners enjoyed their experience in the restaurant. The two dining rooms within the restaurant provide diners with a jovial and pleasant eating experience.
• I was astounded to read some of the very negative reviews of Il Patriota in Piazza dell Accademia. I’m afraid if you enter a restaurant, shop, public transport – whatever – with a negative approach – you are very likely to receive he required minimum of attention. On the other hand I am of the belief that if you appear interested, are polite and demonstrate a positive, friendly demeanour – you’ll have excellent service, be treated with respect and enjoy the experience.
• I have travelled the globe and have always found this method of approach to be highly successful. I should also tell you that regarding costs - we did not feel costs were highly over-priced and regarding being asked repeatedly if you wished more, well, it doesn't take much savvy to say "No thank you".

This place is such a trap ! Oh yes, the waitress is cute... but she is just here to increase your expense by repeatdly asking you if you don't want more of this, or more of that. The pasta was not good, the brushetta was greasy... And we had to pay 63 euros for these two meals, a bottle of water and a Spritz that was 50 percent ice. Surprise : on top of everything, there was a 6 euros "tax" on the bill. Run far away from this fraudulous place.

We were solicited from the street to come inside (we needed lunch so no big deal) at a glance the place seemed unique and authentic. But the service was very mediocre (to be kind). Once we had to turn down the upsales the service got very unmatentive and slow. Food was decent. But a very hollow experience. Keep walking!!!

The service, style, decor, fresh seafood cuisine and overall experience, was tops. Would definitely return to this marvel of a restaurant. Great drinks and wine list. Excellent location.
