“Must see architecture”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 September 2013 via mobile

It doesn't look like much, but if you have marveled on St. Pouls Cathedral og St. Peters Church, this is a must see. The mentioned basilika's and many more have based there domes on this little chapel. Besides beeing an architectural pearl, it's a tranquil place to relax.

“Must see: Bramante's Tempietto - a Renaissance architectural masterpiece”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 July 2013

Bramante's Tempietto is a definite must see if you are interested in Renaissance architecture.

The Tempietto sits in a courtyard in the building adjacent to San Pietro in Montorio. There is no entrance fee. You can walk around the Tempietto, take pictures, and visit the lower level.

HOURS:

Tuesday - Saturday
9:30 - 12:30
2:00 - 4:30

These are the hours posted on the gate outside the Tempietto courtyard (see photo). I'm sure they are subject to change.

HOW TO GET THERE:
There are at least two options for getting to the church: by taxi and walking. We took a taxi from the Spanish Steps and were dropped off in the piazza directly in front of the church. It was probably a 15 minute ride.

Another option is to walk. We walked from the church, down the hill, through the streets of Trastevere, across the bridge, and to the Pantheon. It took about 30 minutes.

There is a set of stairs that cuts down the hill. The base of the stairs is at the intersection of Via Bartolomeo Galletti and Via Goffredo Mameli. It is an easy climb (although we went down and not up). There is another set of stairs in front of the church but when we were there in June, these stairs were gated and locked.

To access the stairs we used, exit the Tempietto courtyard and turn right. Walk on the sidewalk down the left side of the main street and you will see the top of the stairs.

INTERIOR OF THE TEMPIETTO
There are two levels. The lower level is open it to public. There is a set of stairs at the back side of the Tempietto.

The main level is locked.

I tried to arrange a visit by email (using the email listed on the church website) but was unable to do so. While we were there, a small group was let into the church - they were workers/architects taking measurements.

There appears to be an office to the right (first door) as you enter the courtyard. You may be able to arrange to have someone unlock the door by inquiring there.

The surrounding area of the church is quiet and residential with lots of grass. It would be a nice place for a picnic. There were no shops or cafes in the immediate vicinity.
