“Quiet oasis in busy Rome”
Reviewed 17 July 2012 via mobile

We stayed for 5 nights in the Empire Palace in July 2012 based on Trip Advisor recommendations. Hitting Rome during a heat wave made the air conditioning in the hotel one of the best features. The room was a pleasant temperature throughout or stay and the AC was very quiet. Bed linens were crisp and fresh changed daily, and towels twice a day. Plentiful toiletries were colourfully packaged and good quality.

The courtyard restaurant was a pleasant venue for drinks, snacks and the occasional dinner. Food was good and well presented. The breakfast buffet was outstanding and offered a wide range of fresh options.

Francesco at the front desk was extremely helpful giving us tips on more unusual, less visited sights.

The one challenge for the hotel was the evolving WIFI system which offered sporadic connectivity during our stay and hardly ever in the room. This system is being updated as we leave.

This was the first hotel I'd used in Europe, so I only had other people's stories about what to expect from a Roman hotel. It was just about what I had been led to expect, except the bathroom was nicer.

The desk staff was nice, but only one of our three rooms was ready when we got there. We were allowed to put our bags in the one room, which made us feel better from a security standpoint, however, there was no luggage cart or porter available. The elevators (Lift A in the front and Lift B in the back) are small and slow. On days when cruises are departing (at least one line, Celebrity, uses this hotel for its guests who come in early), the porters will be using Lift B all morning long to transport the checked baggage, so don't even try to get to it.

If you are mobility impaired, this is not a good place for you to stay!! To get to either elevator you must climb stairs.

The reception area is small, so if more than about a half dozen guests are trying to get to the front desk it's going to feel very tight. The rooms are smallish, and the double beds are two singles pushed together. The armoire is a good size, and there's a programmable safe in there for your valuables. Small refrigerator is provided, along with mini-bar type drinks and mixers.

The bathroom was sizeable, and the toilet was big and modern. In Europe you have two options to flush - the small button is for liquids and the large one for solids. This is a water saving solution. Both buttons worked just fine for their intended purposes. The bidet is there, but I'm an American and have no idea how to use one properly, so I didn't.

The showers are a nightmare. A little glass enclosure spans half the length of the tub (which itself is narrow by our standards), and there's no other way to keep the water in the tub. I'm not a messy person in the bathroom, and even I couldn't keep the water from slopping all over the floor while bathing. Still, it gets you clean.

There's a charming patio where it's pleasant to have wine or cocktails before going out for dinner. Our waiter was elegantly dressed and had traditional old world manners and grace. He was not quick, however. Don't go here for a quick drink, allow some time and enjoy it.

There is an attached restaurant where I only ate breakfast. The breakfast was average, though plentiful. You won't go hungry, but you won't say WOW either. The orange juice is red (different oranges than your standard Florida orange) but very tasty.

An internet connection is provided gratis, but only one for the entire hotel. We didn't bring our laptop on this trip, so it was a nice amenity to have available. The lounge area is large and poorly decorated. I don't know where they found the paintings on the wall, but they displayed them like we should be impressed. They were depressing and dark. The walls were an ugly ochre, but the seats were comfortable.

Lots of little trattorias around this hotel, and we didn't have any problems walking around the area at night. La Lampada and Trattoria Flavia were both good for dinner, though Flavia was a bit pricey.

It's removed from the main tourist areas, but don't let that stop you. Taxis are plentiful and the subway system is on a par with New York's in terms of cleanliness, but very cheap and easy to use, even if you don't read Italian. You can get tickets at any tobacconist shop.

The location is great, and the service members are so nice!

Room Tip: The single beds are very large, so if you don't mind sharing, you'll have plenty of room!

On our last night in Rome before returning to Canada, we stayed at this hotel. It had been selected on the Internet based on location, rating and price. What a very pleasant surprise! The hotel was spotless. The staff very warm and pleassant. The room (and bathroom) was a good size and the service, exceptional! We will definately be back on our ne43xt trip to Rome. I would aslso highly recommend.

Since I found the hotel on tripadvisor.com based on customer reviews, its only fitting I leave one as well. My wife and I just stayed at Empire Palace June 29-July 2 and it was wonderful. First, the location couldn't be better. We walked everywhere and saw everything. The room was updated, clean, and the staff cleaned every day and replenished towels twice a day, a biggie for us as it was extremely hot and we showered a couple times a day. The breakfast buffet was included and was excellent. The staff was courteous and helpful at all times. I really enjoyed this hotel and will recommend to friends and stay again when we return to Rome.

Room Tip: We had a deluxe double room which was fine.

I was a little worried having read some of the reviews of this hotel but decided to stay with it and we were happy with the hotel overall. We stayed for two nights pre cruise and one night post cruise. Yes the rooms are small but this is Europe......the decor was nice and the amenities were nice - minibar- robes- slippers - lovely toiletries. Internet and breakfast were included. Internet worked fine pre cruise but did not work post cruise. That was a big disappointment. Breakfast was also fine. Nothing over the top but enough to start the day and suited us fine. Neighborhood is nice. 15 minute walk to metro or termini and a short cab ride everywhere. Plenty of nice restaurants in the area. Front desk staff were always kind. Rooms were available by 11 am for checkin also which was a bonus. Post cruise management treated us to a bottle of prosecco and a fruit basket. Very nice touch! Thank you for a nice stay!

Also check out the gelato place around the corner - a little latte - delicious with beautiful presentation and reasonably priced!
