The building on busy Via Cavour was covered in graffiti and the entrance lobby, which serves the whole building, was less than inviting, but once we had mastered the ancient elevator (one of our favorite features) and entered the hotel we were pleasantly surprised. Alberta, who speaks very good English, mans the desk, and is a great source of information. The bedrooms are a decent size, somewhat old-fashioned, but very clean and there is AC. The bathrooms are outdated but functional and there is lots of hot water for showers. Breakfast is served in the room. It was disappointing: the coffee was the worst we experienced in Italy and the juice was strange (reconstituted?) There was a pastry each, jam and bread. This wasn't a big deal because there is good coffee, etc available in the immediate neighborhood. The hotel is situated between the Cavour and Colosseum metro stops, very close to the Forum and Colosseum. There are good restaurants and bars, a 'tabac' for metro tickets, etc., delis, and small food stores within a 100 meters. We walked to most sights, but having learned to navigate the metro on a day trip to Ostia Antica, we did use it again to get to the Vatican.
