“Tiny hotel in old Villa”
Reviewed 26 January 2014

I travelled to Rome after deciding -last minute- joining my family during the birthday celebration of my uncle. Since the house was full, Villa Mangili was the perfect option.

It is situated in a beautiful residential area in Rome (Parioli), just besides the famous Villa Borghese gardens, and just few doors away from my family.

After climbing the stairs of the old style Villa, you are welcomed into a large living room that doubles as breakfast room.

My bedroom was on the same floor and had all the facilities: safe box, mini bar, flat tv, airco etc. The decoration was in rose colors, with a large bed but few lights. Although the pillows were not the best -hard for my taste- I had good sleep. The bathroom was tiny but perfectly workable with nice toiletries.

Breakfast was the typical Italian sweet cakes and toast. Cereal, juices, fruits and nice coffee were also available. It seems that you have to share the table with other guests but in my case, I always had breakfast alone.

The internet is complimentary and available through the hotel and the people at reception were very attentive. They even catered breakfast before the usual time since I was leaving very early to catch the train.

knowing that the hotel is located in a former palace you imagine the hotel to be very different.

first of all it is in our understanding a B&B and not a hotel. All rooms are located in the basement, giving you the feeling of being in a prison cell since all windows are small and barred up with iron. The first impression of the room is ok, but if you look into details you see damaged floor boards, multi sockets not providing a secure feeling. In the shower you have on the bottom fungus stains and on the top some oil lining.

Breakfast is every day the same, only cakes and sweet stuff. Fruits are on the verge of being good and you have to share the tables with other guests

the noise at the reception is to hear in the rooms due to bad isolation.

The booking for the room was done via Splendia.com and as a club member a welcome gift was mentioned. Asking for it we were told it was an old promotion which is no longer valid.

The beds are super hard and uncomfy to sleep - as much as the pillows

All over experience is negative and we would not recommend the place to friends since it is also too far away from public transport and the city centre. Taxi drivers do not know it neither.

I recently stayed at the hotel. We were a party of 4, 2 couples. We had booked it as a surprise for my sister's 60th birthday.

When we arrived we had a wonderful greeting from the manager. He gave us our keys and we checked in. The rooms were very nice and had everything in we needed.

We went to the terrace and had a drink, nothing was to much trouble!

It is about a 10 minute walk but your are then in the centre, Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps etc.

Breakfast is in the room to the side of reception. At first it seemed odd to be sitting at a table with strangers, but soon got use to it.

The breakfast was an Italian breakfast, delicious fresh fruit, croissants, rolls, any tea or coffee, there were so many choices, just ask for anything you want and they have it!

We sent some time talking to the Manager, he was very pleasant and informative.

There is a wonderful little beer shop around the corner. You pick what you want and just sit inside/outside talking to them. There was a wonderful restaurant across the road with the best food in Rome.

We are visiting Rome again next year with friends and will definitely be staying here again!!

we have been to Rome before and so have our friends. Our experience of the other hotels had put us off re visiting Rome, not anymore now we have found Villa Mangili!

Depending on what you're looking for, the location is either good or bad. Struggled whether to give this a 3 or 4 star review for a couple of reasons.
--Not convenient to anything. It's a 10 minute walk to get to any shops/restaurants/metro/etc. Not the end of the world, but if you're in Rome for a short period of time, it makes a difference. To get to Termini, it's a 15 minute walk to the metro station, and another bit on the metro. Total about 35 minutes. Walking, it's at least 45 minutes.
--The place itself is really nice. They have an outdoor terrace; we ended the night with a bottle of wine out there.
--We had 2 incidents in the room. The first blew out our USB charger/cord; fried them both, and presumably tripped a breaker in the room. The power was back on when we returned a few hours later.
--Second was water pouring out of the overhead light fixture in the bathroom. I mean, pouring. Water + electricity = a bit disconcerting. Front desk said nothing could be done till the next day. It eventually stopped. I'm guessing there was a leak in the shower or something on the floor above, which is why it stopped.

Like I said, I could easily give 3 stars but for the people at the front desk were very nice, and if you're looking for a quiet location it's great. And for 40 euros, we could have taken a cab in if we wanted and still come out ahead price-wise.

With 12 rooms in total, Villa Mangili is a small but excellent hotel. We (2 adults + 1 child) stayed 4 nights and we really enjoyed the calm and nice ambience after an exhausting day around Rome. And we had the luck to get the only room (triple room) with direct access to a private garden. The room was clean, comfortable and in good condition - safe, TV, alarm, ... . The staff was very extreme friendly and absolute helpful - everybody was highly service-oriented. Car parking is possible along the street in front of the hotel for a reasonable price. The park Villa Borghese is just a 5 minutes walk and also the centre can be reached on foot or a short bus trip. There are some good restaurants in this area for a delicious dinner with much better price and quality compared to Downtown. The typical Italian breakfast was a great starter for the day ... served with fresh fruits, home-made jams and home-made cakes. The only criticism is the small breakfast room in terms of the number of tables which could lead to a waiting time until others finish. For sure we will come back when we visit Rome again.

Located just to the north of Borghese Gardens, its about a 20 minute walk to the Spanish Steps, or there's a tram stop and taxi rank nearby. The hotel is in a quiet leafy street and nice to retreat to after a busy day sightseeing. The rooms are relatively basic but the decor is impressive. The staff are almost all exceptional, and are equally happy to spend time recommending local restaurants or troubleshooting wifi access. Breakfast had the potential to be really good but it is served in the reception room and there are only two tables (8 covers) so it gets congested. Worse than that, on one morning they ran out of food and asked us to leave the table before we had finished as other people were waiting for breakfast! That took the edge off an otherwise enjoyable stay and we'd be unlikely to return as a result.
