“Great Pool, Room and Service”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 July 2014

Absolutely loved this hotel. The pool is fantastic and the service was excellent. I had a room facing the pool that was quiet and very comfortable. This hotel is located outside the city center in a neighborhood. There is a little bar behind the hotel and a restaurant around the corner both worth a visit.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the pool

Our plan was to stay at the Pulitzer Hotel for the first three days and then retire to a hotel with a swimming pool in order to relax for the latter part of our week in Rome. This is why we found ourselves checking into the Gianicolo.
We stayed at the Gianicolo for four nights and I have to say I found this hotel wanting. The hotel building is very grand with lots of green marble and wood panelling and would have been spectacular back in the 1950’s. The hotel was very clean throughout but is in dire need of a facelift with dour curtains and really weird colour combinations of wallpaper (pink velvety paper on one floor and a bright green on another with dark wood throughout). It desperately needs a visit from a decent interior designer because the potential for this hotel is enormous. The breakfast room for instance has wonderful views across Rome but is rather dark and dismal. If it was coloured in creams and pastel colours with some nicely draped curtains this would be a room to behold but nobody seems to see the potential. Not once did I see anyone have a meal in the hotel restaurant during our stay. But there are plenty of local restaurants within easy walking distance. The Hotel has wi-fi but I found I could not get this in my room (1st floor), and I could only get a signal at the back of the seating area near the pool. There was a good signal in lounge. Our room was rather dark and dismal.
The pool however was wonderful with plenty of sun beds and nice area to sit in the shade and eat or drink. The pool depth does start out at around 3’ though and then it gets deeper as you move towards the far end (at the deep end your feet don’t touch the bottom which is worth knowing if you have children). However, they do have a pool guy on hand who also hands out the towels and swimming hats (Yes, I did say swimming hats which have to be worn by both men and women).
The biggest issue with this hotel was the lack of staff available to serve food or drink by the pool and inside bar. The first day we arrived we headed for the pool and I went to the bar to ask for a drink only to find it deserted. I waited, and waited and finally some fifteen minutes later a very fierce looking guy appears and takes my order. No bill was given to me and so when I left the pool again I had to go looking for someone so that I could sign the bill. I failed to find anyone but found the bill on a counter inside the hotel which I signed and left with still nobody in sight.
Later that evening the same thing happened with the bar inside the hotel. It could be that they do so little volume at the bar that it doesn’t warrant somebody standing there all evening and if that’s the case then I suggest they add a bell on the counter for customers to ring when they want service.
Another issue was mosquitoes. Both my wife and I got bitten to death when sitting outside in the evening and even in the lounge bar. Yes, we can provide our own protection and following that event we did but why are there no measures to help prevent people getting bitten? Most hotels have citronella placed around tables and also provide plug-in electrical devices to keep the mosquitoes at bay in your room at night. This hotel had none of these and appeared to do nothing about the problem.
On the few occasions we asked at reception for assistance with anything everyone was very helpful but nobody could be described as “warm and cheerful”, everything was very factual and lacked the warmth and cheerfulness we had experienced at our last hotel. This improving this could make all the difference and if they also solved the staffing issue then many customers would forget the fact that the hotel needs a refurb throughout. Unfortunately in its present condition and with the service we received I will not be staying here again.

Room Tip: My room was on the first floor (104) and was a little dark and dismal with no real view but clean an...

Had a really lovely stay at the Grande. Nice family room and great customer service. However it is pretty far out from the city centre. It says it's about a 15 minute walk to the Vatican however it's really nearer 25-30 minutes. In the heat we never even tried the walk back. Taxis are plentiful but don't agree a price make sure it's on the meter or you could end up paying double.
The pool is lovely but remember your swim cap it's compulsory.

Room Tip: Walk in to Trastevere to find the best places to eat.

Booked over a year ago for a visit with a group of friends. On arrival found the hotel sporting a 50's glamour feel with green marble floors throughout and Venetian glass staircase. The reception staff were very helpful and we were given a corner room on the second floor overlooking the front courtyard (207). Compact but clean with a shower, desk with a large mirror and a small safe. Aircon was very useful in late June ( switches off when you open a window:) Only complaint was the bidet was too close to the toilet for my long legs!
Swimming pool was a massive bonus and open till 7pm for the afternoon siesta and the obligatory glass of wine or two. Breakfast was buffet style on the fourth floor in a rooftop room with a 360 view. Main plus point was it's location at the top of the hill of Trastevere within walking distance of quality eateries and the Vatican. Some of our party had room issues bearing in mind our really advanced booking but would visit here again

This hotel was a great location for us. It's in the trastavere area and as a result is a five minute walk from great restaurants with a great atmosphere which are much cheaper than the centre of Rome. The hotel as other reviews say is a little dated in terms of colours and style, but saying that it's clean and the pool and grounds more than make up for it. We hit the tourist locations hard during the day and all in the hit sun so it was fabulous to go back to the hotel for a swim and some time lazing with a glass of wine by the pool. Good hotel, great gardens and pool, good location for cheaper restaurants with a great atmosphere.

This was our second stay at this Hotel (4 days from 31st May 2014), having stayed here about 4 years ago. We returned here because we really liked the Hotel and location. Just far enough outside the centre of Rome for a bit of peace and quiet after a hectic day at the fabulous sites. Plus it is also walkable to the Vatican and other central locations. That is provided you pace yourselves. We loved all aspects of the Hotel, the staff were great, the breakfast was just what was needed and the added value of returning to a cool dip in the pool was perfect. If we return to Rome, which is a given, we will definitely look to stay at this Hotel. As I have said above it’s in the perfect location for exploring and supported by great staff.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a jet bath. A great way to relax after a lot of walking during the day
