We stayed here for 3 nights as part of a Riviera Tour. This hotel is clean and comfortable and the staff polite. Breakfast was a buffet which was varied and plentiful. The beds were very comfortable and it was nice to have a bath instead of just a shower. Overall it was a good base from which to tour Rome. We had our first evening's meal here which was good, but the service was quite slow... so for the next two nights we ventured 5 minutes out and found a very good restaurant which we preferred.

We just spent 6 days for a nice sightseeing tour in Rome and we decided to stay at this hotel, since it had a swimming pool and we always think it is a nice thing if you can have a quick swim after a day of wandering around in the city. Overall we were quite satisfied with the hotel, apart from a couple of things:

- the area is not the nicest one; walking to the hotel can sometimes feel like an adventure and we definitely recommend walking along the Via Leonardo da Vinci
- the opening hours of the swimming pool are ridiculous. Most of the time it is occupied by sports groups and free swimming is usually only possible either very early or very late.
- sometimes the service was quite weird. My wife wanted to have some hot water for her tea and we were told that we could not take anything out of the breakfast room. I mean, we were only asking for hot water, not a major meal. We talked to reception and they ended up having a fight with the guys in the kitchen.

But enough of the drawbacks, lets go to the advantages:

- we had a really big room which is not always a given, so we really enjoyed that we could spread out.
- the breakfast was surprisingly rich. 5 different kinds of yoghurt, a couple of cereals, a lot of dolci, ham and eggs, not the usual thin fare. We would have loved to have some rolls, though
- it is just about ten minutes from the nearest tube station and from there its just 4 stops to the Colosseum, so quite central.

The hotel is quite clean and we really enjoyed our stay there.
One little piece of advice: When you walk from the tube to the hotel you will pass a gelateria (Viola Rossa) with the best ice-cream in Rome. Definitely a reason to go there again. Also, around the corner there is a restaurant called "Pomodoro e mozarella" with food to die for.

After some unintended medical tourism in Italy (heart issue), my wife and I stayed at Hotel Oly for about three weeks holidaying in Rome instead of our planned circumnavigation of Sicily.

Being a little out of the tourist centre of Rome, the hotel and surrounding area are generally quiet, safe, less crowded and relaxing. Sao Paulo seems to generally be a middle class and University suburb. Nevertheless, you are not far from the action - access to transport is good - bus just outside goes to Teatro Marcello and Metro Line B train is about 8 minutes walk away - 4 stops to the Colliseum and 6 to Termini. We found the location to be an excellent base for touring Rome and environs (see our blog - http://violaegiovanni.wordpress.com).

We dined in the hotel about half the time. Restaurant meals in the evening were of a consistently high standard with the fish dishes especially good. Visitors to Italy need to understand that Italians really don't "do breakfast" like the English. We stayed with cereals and fresh fruit - a satisfying and healthy option. Those looking for a "big breakfast" might be a little disappointed. We found a variety of good restaurants locally.

Internet access was important to us - was free and generally good - though was better for Skype etc wired rather than using wireless. There was a useful free printing service also (for online check-in etc).

Hotel was built about 1990 and is well maintained. It looks like a 1960s retro design. My wife and I both dislike aircon - so welcomed the ability to simply open our window instead. Clientele seems to be a mix of business customers and English/Spanish tour buses. We found neither intruded on our convenience in any way. Our room was very comfortable - the only service we missed was the ability to do our own ironing.

Hotel staff were courteous, friendly and obliging. In particular, our dining room waitresses were saints - eg putting up with our ordering in Italian “two tickets of wine please” (biglietti cf bicchieri).

If the rating system allowed 1/2 stars, I would rate the property at 3 1/2 stars. My brother, sister-in-law, girlfriend and I began our stay as part of a party of 50. This was the last stop of a 2 week tour in Europe and the tour included 2 days at the property. However when booking the tour we wanted more time in Rome so we arranged to extend our stay by 4 days. We arrived on October 5th and departed October 11th. The hotel is located outside the city center in an area with adequate restaurants, shopping, etc. For a normal individual, the walk to the metro stop is 10-15 minutes. The metro time is 12-20 minutes depending on what stop you want in the city center. The rooms are large by European standards, very functional and clean. The hotel is air conditioned. The hotel is quiet and we actually prefer this to noisy downtown hotels. There is no bar so don't stay here if that is a deal killer for you. Alcohol is available in the restaurant or at nearby bars. Breakfast was about average to all of the properties that we stayed in around Italy. Scambled eggs that are probably powdered, bacon cooked less than most Americans like, coldcuts, cheese, several bread choices, pastries, etc. You have to remember that you are in Italy, not the U.S., although it is better than most free breakfast served at smaller chain hotels in the U.S. I did not eat another meal in the hotel as I was usually gone during lunch and dinner time. I don't travel to Europe to spend time in a hotel. The menu seemed adequate although most non Europeans would probably see it as expensive. I did eat several meals at the nearby Burro e Sugo restaurant. I thought this place was excellant as to food and value. It has fixed price menus with good food choice. Portions were large. Back to the hotel. The desk staff was friendly and helpful. A computer was available for use at the front desk free of charge. The hotel had free wi-fi that was overall adequate. It did lose signal at times, but Italy is not known for great internet service. Free is a bonus in Italy. The hotel is geared toward groups and business travelers. If you want romantic, this property probably won't excite you. If you want good value, adequate room space, and functionality then it might be for you. I would gladly stay at it again if I were to return to Italy.

OlyHotelStaff, Direttore at Oly Hotel, responded to this reviewResponded 16 October 2012

Dear Sir,
first of all I would like to thank you for your review of our hotel and then, on behalf of the whole staff, I would like to apologize for the behavior of some of us.
Our bar is open from 5:00 PM and I am extremely sorry about you not being served properly.
We do our best to solve problems as soon as they show up but we can’t do anything if our guests don’t tell us if there’s anything wrong.
According to the HACCP rules the eggs we serve at breakfast are fresh, pasteurized and cooked right away and we never use powders or cook them previously.
For security reasons we removed chairs and tables from the balconies but our reception can provide them upon request.
Our property has two eight-person elevators in the main hall and a six-person elevator at one end of the building, so if fifty guests with their suitcases want to use them at the same time some of them might have to wait a few minutes.
Yours sincerely,
Andrea Nicolai
