“Spacious, affordable apartment, close to the Vatican”
Reviewed 28 June 2014

The apartment is in a great location, especially if you are interested in visiting the Vatican. Our host was friendly and helpful on check in. The accommodation is spacious and well provisioned, and we would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone. It also provided great value for money.

We can’t say enough good things about A San Pietro da Susy - this is a fantastic apartment in a great location that is beautifully furnished and well managed. Our taxi dropped us at the front door, and we were immediately greeted by the owner, who was out on the balcony awaiting our arrival. There is a short set of steps up to the ground floor where a lift can be utilised to take the bags upstairs to the apartment on the next level. Once in, we were welcomed home and shown around.

This is a 3 bedroom flat with a living/dining room and a small kitchen. The two main bedrooms are en-suite, and the third has a dedicated full bathroom just opposite it’s door. The kitchen is small but contains everything needed, and the owner had already stocked it with water, milk, coffee, cereals and toast. There is a grocery a couple of blocks away for any other necessities such as wine, cheese and fruit. The apartment is situated almost exactly between two Metro stations, about 700m from either Cipro and Ottaviano.

We were given keys that locked our individual rooms and allowed access to the main door and the apartment’s front door. Individual air conditioning was available in all rooms and there are satellite televisions with BBC News in each bedroom. The owner was a perfect hostess and available even afterward to answer any questions we might have had. We found a spot of dust here and there, and the furniture showed some signs of wear, but the visit was perfect, and we felt as if we had our own flat in the Vatican area.

Best of all, when shared with another couple, the price worked out to less than one might pay for a medium chain hotel in America - about $105 per couple per night. Bravo, Susy family - you have provided a wonderful haven for the visitor to Rome.

Room Tip: Ask for one of the rooms with the en-suite.

This lovely apartment is located on a tree lined one way, centrally located residential street in Rome. The apartment is spacious and beautifully furnished. It comprises of 3 double bedrooms, 2 with real marble en-suite bathrooms and 1 separate bathroom, large entrance hall, large sitting / dining room and a small kitchen area. The apartment is located on the first floor of a lovely 1920/30's building with entry via large double doors and marble steps or by use of the quaint old fashioned lift. The apartment is furnished to a high standard with some lovely antiques, modern Sony flat TV's to the bedrooms and basic kitchen equipment. Best part of the kitchen is the Gaggia coffee machine which is a lovely touch. The beds are very comfortable and we had a great sleep every night. Location is also handy for the Vatican being only about a 15 minute walk away and again, only a 10 minute walk to a Metro for the other many Rome attractions. I really enjoyed our 4 nights here and felt part of Rome life which was wonderful. Susy the owner was most helpful at all times. She arranged our shuttle to and from the airport and let us stay in the apartment for the best part of the last day due to our late flight. If you wish a holiday where you actually feel part of a community and dont mind walking then this is an ideal place to stay and I would thoroughly recommend.

We booked Susy for six nights following great write-ups on this site. The B&B is in an apartment block in residential Rome - about 2kms from the Vatican. It comprises of three well presented bedrooms and a rather ornate dining room where guests partake of a rather dubious breakfast (one choice of cereal and packaged air-line type food such as dried toast and croissants). Can't vouch for the coffee but the tea was not good. There are two concerns regarding this B&B. First, there is no on-site assistance. Many people arrived, resident guests were left to let them in and they were then obliged to phone the woman who appears to run the place (?Susy). Second, there appears to be an obsessiveness with the saving of electricity. The main hallway has no natural lighting and is on a timer-switch. Unfortunately, the hall light switch is a fair distance from the front door and on numerous occasions my husband and I almost fell over in the dark trying to locate it. There are notices everywhere requesting that lights be extinguished and the dining room which could act as a communal meeting area is perpetually in darkness. A cleaner visits daily to arrange breakfast and clean the rooms and there is an expectation that guests do not loiter over breakfast and leave their rooms before 10am in order for cleaning to be undertaken. Communication is a difficulty if you do not speak the language. My ten week course in Italian in no way assisted me to explain that our room overlooked a busy street and I had purchased ear plugs in order to sleep. In the end I used sign language and we were moved to a quieter room after three nights. Communication also broke down on our last day - when Mr. Bush decided to visit the Vatican and parts of the metro was closed as a security measure. A list of taxis in the B&B was out of date, the phone (then located in the dining room) was of no assistance and the cleaner refused to use this and/or our mobile in order to phone for a taxi. We were shown the door of the B&B, wished 'Buongiorno' and the door was shut in our faces. Tip: find a hotel which provides the services a tourist will benefit from in Rome.

The location was very convenient with regard to the Metro stop and St. Peter's. The room itself was quite charming. BUT: No phone in the room or even in the common area of the apartment. The bathroom was across the hallway and we were supposed to use a key to lock and unlock it each time. Breakfast was served in a nicely appointed dining room but the food was quite pathetic -- cocoa puffs and stale croissants that came out of a package. (The coffee however was excellent!) The lady in charge of the set-up (Susy?) spoke no English and although she meant well, communication proved to be a big challenge. All in all, a very mixed experience.

I stayed in a huge gorgeous room with every amenity for 3 nights (at the time a truly great bargain at just 70 Euros a night!). The bed was giant and comfortable, the all-marble en-suite bathroom modern and stunning, and my room's tall windows opened onto a sweet little courtyard. There was no noise whatsoever, leading to a great lie in, followed by a nice (packaged) breakfast in the self-catering kitchen. Also, the non-smoking room really was non-smoking: no cigarette odor whatsoever!

All in all, the best accommodations we had in Italy that trip. We saw no staff at Susy's, as we arrived at an odd time and I left before dawn, but for all that, we had no trouble getting in and getting around and I highly recommend this cute, cute place.

You'll have to take the metro or some *very* long walks to any "sights" save the Vatican and St. Peter's, but it's worth it for the peace and quiet and value.

My wife and I stayed at BB Susy for four nights in early January - beautifully furnished, spotlessly clean and a joy to stay in. It was pouring with rain when we arrived late in the evening, so we got a bit lost walking from the Metro, despite having exchanged emails and received good directions. We had arranged a meeting time (as there is no receptionist at the B&B) and the proprietors phoned us on my (English) mobile when we hadn't shown at the agreed time. They gave us extra directions and Roberto, the proprietor, came out to meet us in the pouring rain.
We were made to feel most welcome throughout our stay and it felt as if we had become part of the family: breakfast was good, with freshly brewed coffee, tea, sweet croissant-type rolls etc. and the two ladies who take care of serving breakfast, cleaning, etc chatted like old friends (I had the advantage of being able to speak Italian - it may be a bit disconcerting if you don't do Italian, as they are happy to sit on the sofa and chat while the guests eat breakfast - please don't take offence, they are only exchanging family gossip!). Their local knowledge of bus routes and attractions etc supplimented the generous supply of maps and other useful printed information.
We had an excellent break - the location couldn't have been better whether you wanted to use public transport or walk in to the city centre.
We would have no hesitation in returning and recommending it to others.
