“PERFECT PLACE TO STAY IN ROME”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 September 2013

We stayed 5 nights in June. The city was crowded and temperatures in the 30's. What a relief it was to return to Residenza Arco dei Tolomei at the end of a busy days sightseeing.
Quiet and confortable accommodation in a lovely area close to good restaurants and walking distance to many of the popular attractions. It was suggested to us on arrival that we visit a few of the less known gems in Rome and it was this advice that made all the difference to our visit. Breakfast was always a very pleasant experience and a good opportunity to chat with other guests about their experiences from the previous day's sightseeing.
We strongly recommend this property to anyone planning a trip to Rome.

Really enjoyed our stay. The location was perfectly situated in the Trastevere district, about 1.5 blocks from the river. Numerous trattorias around and just about 4 blocks from the heart of the neighborhood. Away from the more touristy areas, but still within walking distance to everything. Room was good sized. Would definitely stay here again.

Please read this review only if you would like to determine whether or not to stay at this property.

Most people read reviews and start with the worst comments, then the most favorable. This, however, can be quite time consuming. The purpose of this posting is to save you valuable time by simply saying that this location is an excellent choice while in Rome.

Facts
If for no other reason, you should stay here to meet Joseline. We were here for 6 days and did not have the good fortune to meet Marco during our stay. While here, she was most pleasant, thoughtful and accommodating. Seems as though she took guest satisfaction quite seriously and made it her aim to make everyone feel welcomed. When my wife fell ill, she not only recommended a nearby hospital that is free for tourist, but stopped by our room later on in the day to inquire as to her well-being. That alone should give you some sort of insight as to the place you will be staying. Genuine human kindness abounds.

The location is far enough away from the hordes that come to Rome, yet close enough to walk to many of the attractions.

Although the building is five hundred years old, there is a certain likable character that comes with it. Absolutely everything works and the room we stayed in (closest to the computer) was very comfortable. The air conditioning was an unexpected surprise and very much appreciated.

When night falls, to the left of the Guest House near the traffic light is a city within a city teaming with things to do and places to eat. It has the feel of Venice, a narrow labyrinth of streets with no wasted spaces. Also, if you cross the street from the Guest House, you will be met by the Tiber River. If you walk down the steps, there are still more things to do and places to dine.

You may want to bring some mosquito repellant while here.

Rebuttals
If one likes to be coddled from the time they arrive for 24 hours a day, this is not the place for you.

We too were concerned whether or not we could find the Guest House, so we arranged with Marco for an airport pick up. Once off the plane, our driver was right in the arrival area with our name on a sign. We hopped in his Mercedes sedan and were whisked directly to the front door of the property. Next time, we will have the confidence to take public transportation.

If you are from the United States as we are, you will need to adjust to the typical breakfast fare, which was not bad at all (breads, pastries, cereal, fresh fruit, meats and cheese, juice, etc.) While it is not as filling as what is common in the States (scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, potatoes, toast, etc.) bear in mind that you have to adjust, which is not all that difficult. The (over) ripeness and condition of the fruit may be an issue for some, but every morning, there were people eating fruit.

For those with mobility issues, there is no elevator. For those without such concerns, you will not die going up and down the stairs. At 6’1, my head never hit anything, but then again, we stayed in the downstairs room. If your height proves to be a problem and the uneven stairs/steps pose some apprehension, quickly learn when and where to duck and be mindful of the steps.

If you want a "soundproof" room, as some have lamented, this is not the place for you. But one must ask if their present bedroom is "soundproof". If it is not, then you will have no problems with the noise level at night.

There was no mold in our bathroom, so there will be no cannot comment on that.

Musings
Reviews are, by nature, rather subjective. One person’s expectations differ from that of another. That being said, come with an open and adventurous mind. Embrace the differences in what you are accustomed to. If you do so, you should have absolutely no regrets with your stay here.

It is simply impossible to please everyone. We just arrived back home from Europe and read harsh reviews about some of the 4 & 5 star places we just stayed in (The Ritz Carlton and The Westin Grand in Berlin). For all of their grandeur, ambiance and opulence, 24 hour staffing and concierge service, not one of them checked on the condition and well being of my wife as Joseline did.

Room Tip: Specific rooms cannot be guaranteed, but if you want a comfortable bed, downstairs next to the compu...

My husband and I traveled to Italy in August of 2013 (even though we know better) but it was our only time to travel this year. Our stay in Arco Dei Tolomei was the PERFECT location!!! Gianna couldn't have been more accommodating, she helped us with everything and had such great recommendations!

Marco was also extremely helpful and even arranged a car pick up service for us upon our arrival. That was well worth it after traveling all night and not getting any sleep.
Clean, great location, comfortable and courteous. What more can you ask for.

Back home for 2 weeks and still dreaming of our wonderful 4 day stay at the Guest House. Each day started with home made cake and friendly conversation in the dining room. Our host, Marco is multi-talented. He makes home-made jam, knows Rome like the back of his hand, speaks English fluently and can recommend activities that suit your interests. We had been in Rome a few years ago and wanted something different on this trip. Surrounded by antiques and family paintings, with Marco and Joseline attending to our needs, we felt like Italian nobility.

Our family of two adults and two children stayed in two separate rooms, each lovely and perfect for our needs. The location is wonderful: just a short way to the river. We walked to everything we wanted to do in Rome, including all of the top tourist spots. Most things can be walked to in 20 minutes or so. Trastevere is a great part of Rome, not as loud as some other touristy locations but still close enough to everything you might want to see and do. Marco and Gianna make you feel completely at home. Marco is happy to advise you on what to see and do, how to get there, where to eat, etc. He is like your own personal guidebook. (Speaking of guidebooks -- the library is full of information that you can browse through.) Enjoying breakfast with the other guests is the best part of the day. You can hear what everyone else did yesterday and what they are doing today, which might help to inform your decisions about what to do each day. We will visit again.
