“Our home in Rome”
Reviewed 30 May 2012

We were made to feel welcome from the moment we stepped thru the door at this wonderful, warm family owned and run hotel. Room was comfortable and clean; breakfast each day was a delight. Advice about getting about Rome, accessing tourist sites and what to see, how to get around was excellent. Lost luggage on the flight over was looked after by Marco and arrived the next day.
We wouldn't hesitate to stay here again and meet up again with our wonderful hosts- they made us feel just like family!
Useful tips: the 'hop on, hop off buses' are a fantastic way to get around; walking is easy and you see so much; sites like the Colosseum/Forum--get a group/guided tour and skip the long lines; a visit to the Vatican Museums is unforgettable;small family run cafes and restaurants where the locals eat is the way to go.

This hotel suited my wife and I perfectly. Friendly staff helped with advice on places to visit and restaurants near to hotel where we ate very well. The room was a good size (we were upgraded) with large comfortable bed, adequate storage and hanging space and a good bathroom. The hotel is in a quiet area away from most tourist attractions but for us this was a positive advantage as you see much more while walking around on the way to the Vatican or Colosseum. Breakfasts were excellent with plenty of variety. The hotel entrance does appear less than welcoming when arriving at the weekend since the outer door is kept closed for extra security : just ring the bell to get access to reception on the first floor. The hotel arranged a limo to take us to the airport and this is well worthwhile perhaps especially on arrival. Altogether a very pleasant stay in Rome due in large part to the hotel and staff.

Rome was the first of our 4 stops while in Italy and we arrived at the Hotel Golden about 6:30 pm after missing a connecting flight in Paris. At check-in, Marco told us he was upgrading us from our reserved “Double Classic” to a “Double Superior” and giving us one of their best rooms. Our room was literally 3 steps from the desk, room 101. It was a good size room and very clean. The bathroom was also a good size, although the shower was a bit small (which is pretty standard in Europe) and there could have been more counter space, but otherwise, it was nice. The view was disappointing, our window opened into the alleyway corridor behind the building – so you were basically looking in other people’s windows and where they store the trash – not very appealing. Needless to say, the blinds remained closed while we were there. The bed was one of the most uncomfortable I’ve slept on, it was two twins pushed together but was also hard as a rock – I literally felt bruised in the morning. The biggest complaint was the noise. There is no soundproofing to speak of – we could hear every conversation at the front desk and the breakfast room was just on the other side of our room, so we were awakened early every morning as they began to prepare breakfast. Also, I can’t say whether it was guests or staff, but every morning there were people nearly yelling in the hallway. I’m a light sleeper, so had brought ear plugs with me, but they did little to help.

The breakfast room is small, but we never had an issue getting a table. They offered a standard good variety of yogurt, meat/cheese tray, pastries, eggs and cereal. The young girl who worked there was very nice and worked very hard to keep everything replenished. The fresh fruit was a nice treat as well.

Marco and his brother Giuseppe were so nice and very helpful. They provided a map and pointed out all of the most famous attractions. They also gave us great restaurant recommendations each night where we enjoyed delicious food.

I would have liked a room with a nicer view and more comfortable bed, but otherwise, this is a very nice property and they try very hard to make sure you enjoy your stay. The location is very convenient – just across the street from the Borghese Park and about a 5-10 minute walk to the Spanish steps, where you can also catch the metro. I’d recommend this property for anyone looking for a good value.

Room Tip: Ask for one with a view, or away from the front desk/door.

My wife and I opted for a smaller hotel in Rome and after searching various websites including Trip Advisor we opted for the Hotel Golden. The hotel is situated near a lovely park and a pleasant 15 minute walk from the nearest main attractions and is on the first floor of a 4 or 5 storey apartment block. Other reviews mention having to buzz to get into the block but this is for added security and with a 24hr service was never an issue for us. Communication up to and throughout our stay was excellent. The hotel booked our taxi to and from the airport and even booked us into a local restaurant at very short notice without any problems. On arrival we were welcomed & given a personalised map of Rome, mapping out all the major attractions and the best local restaurants. The rooms were very clean and well cared for during our stay & the breakfast was a traditional buffet breakfast. We really couldn't have asked for anything more from our stay and we would like to thank the very friendly and helpful Loria's family. If you want to stay in a no fuss home away from home type of hotel then this is the place, if you want a bar & restaurant within the hotel then look elsewhere. Fantastico...

Just returned from a four night stay at this wonderful small hotel. The staff, all family, were the perfect hosts, nothing a problem, even a broken door key fixed within minutes. Room small but more than adequate and everything you could want for breakfast. Plenty of advice given to make a perfect holiday. Within walking distance of Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain etc. Would love to return.

The Hotel Golden gets many favorable reviews, for good reasons. In fact, it makes it a little difficult to write a review of the Golden because so many good things about the hotel have already been written!

My wife and I stayed at the Golden for six days in mid/late March 2012. We had not travelled to Rome previously, and we relied on Tripadvisor reviews to choose our hotel. It turned out to be a wonderful choice.

Our room was a corner room, with windows looking out on Via Sardegna and Via Marche. When closed, the windows provided excellent sound-proofing; we had no issues with street noise.

The room was decorated tastefully, in shades of blue with white accent. Everything was spotlessly clean and well kept-up. There was ample space for the two of us, and the beds were comfortably firm. The bathroom was huge, with the usual fixtures and a shower (not a tub); the fixtures looked brand new, and everything worked well. The bathroom had a hairdryer and an assortment of toiletries.

The buffet breakfast started at 07:30, and was a great way to start each day. It included a wide selection of breads, pastries, cereals, meat, cheese, eggs, yoghurt and fresh fruit, along with juice, coffee and tea, all carefully laid out by Mama Teresa.

As many reviewers have noted, the hotel is run by the Loria family, and getting to know them is the highlight of a stay at the Golden. To say they are friendly and helpful is an understatement. We mentioned one evening that we would be on an excursion the next morning, leaving before the breakfast buffet was open. Marco told us this was no problem, and he arranged a breakfast tray for us that evening so we would have something to eat in the morning. He was also extremely helpful in giving us assistance in finding our way to Viterbo for a day's excursion. With a smile he explained to us the intricacies of operating the somewhat arcane Sky television remote control in our room. The Lorias speak excellent English, so visitors from Britain or North America (or elsewhere) should not be concerned if their Italian is not up to snuff. They genuinely treat you like family.

For my wife and me, the Golden was an excellent small family-run establishment, comfortable and well-run. If we are fortunate enough to return to Rome some day, we will surely stay again at the Hotel Golden.
