Reviewed 15 February 2014

This hotel is a good example of style over substance. It looks quite striking, but the place is really mediocre. Not terrible, but nothing above 2*/3* at the most.
The rooms are clean and quite comfortable, but very basic. The bathroom is a bit better - go for a room with a bathtub as they're a bit bigger. They advertise Wi-Fi in all the rooms, but this just doesn't happen. Yes, there is Wi-Fi in the corridors and in Reception, but this doesn't extend into the rooms with any success. I had a tablet and the strongest signal I could get was one spot - that meant about 5 minutes to load a Facebook page but only if the signal lasted that long!! The staff were really obliging and offered to change our room, but this problem seemed to extend everywhere, even in rooms adjacent to Reception itself. The doors are very heavy, so we wondered if this blocked the signal in some way. The corridors are black and quite spooky until you get used to it!
Breakfast was quite good by Italian standard, but not inspiring. There was a container of scrambled egg, which never seemed to be replaced (and we sat in the restaurant for quite a while, as this did has Wi-Fi connection!) and there was lukewarm greasy bacon. There were some slices of thin ham too and cold, hard boiled eggs, but the rest was basically lots of cake. Unfortunately, the bread we had was sliced and every day it was hard and stale, even on the day when we got there just after opening time. This was a shame, as you could have managed a reasonable meal had the bread been fresh.
The worst thing about the place was its location. It's a long walk from the bus stop and it is uphill all the way. We're talking a good 10 minutes walk, even longer if you're not good on hills! The road to it is also very rundown and littered with rubbish. Also, the road is extremely busy at all times, so the journey even to Cornelia can take a while in the hotel mini bus. The best way to get there is to take a taxi from Termini - it costs about 20Euro. We were scammed by a taxi driver who charged us 15Euro from Cornelia metro station, which annoyed us. However, DO NOT ORDER A TAXI FROM THE HOTEL!! We ordered one on the last day to get back to Termini and he charged us 30Euros, claiming it was a standard charge by the hotel!!! We couldn't argue, but this did nothing to enhance our opinion of the hotel.
There are no English TV channels of any sort, not even the usual CNN/BBC News/Sky news, which was disappointing as there were quite a few English there. Of course, the staff attitude was basically take it of leave it, which we often found to be the case of many things in Rome!!
The hotel staff were very friendly and helpful to us, though.
We didn't choose this hotel ourselves, as it was part of a package but I wouldn't really recommend it to families or older travellers, just for the inconvenience of where it is. Getting to the centre of Rome can be quite a challenge.
Can I please add a warning - be very careful of your belongings in Rome! There are pick pockets and thieves everywhere and they don't discriminate! We were only there four days, but heard of many stolen purses/wallets during this short time.

Room Tip: They all seemed to be similar. There are no views from anywhere, as far as we could tell!

Black Hotel Rome is a simple and sweet hotel. The design of the entire complex fits well with the name. The jagged lines and the smooth atmosphere compliment each other well. The staff are friendly and helpful. The only real problem is the location. It can be difficult to find and the commute back from the centre can be lengthy.

Ok, now this may seem a very negative review, but there are some good things about this hotel. It is 4 star and in places you can see why. The rooms are spacious and nicely designed (at times to the point of impractibility). The bathrooms are the usual Italian bathroom triumph, the breakfast is good.
Basically someone seems to have thought "What can we with an hotel that no one has done before? I know, well paint it black and give it a suggested Japanese accent.

No.

It doesn't work. No atmosphere whatsoever.

There are details to angst about. We walked in and were greeted by a broken blind (of the Roamn variety, naturally). The seal was missing from the bottom of the shower door so the bathroom was flooded every time we took a shower. The dust sculptures on the light fittings were intriguing. There are hardly any draws or cupboards to the point that we more or less had to live out of bags for our stay.

But none of this was the biggest problem. No the biggest problem is location.

Do not believe anything about easy access to Rome. The hotel is a pig to find. Apart from the free early morning shuttle you have to find your own way to bus stops etc.. The quickest (and safest) route to the bus stops from the hotel is through the grounds of another hotel along an overgrown, be-littered condom covered path. It is then a wait for the bus to the Metro and then another trip into town. None of this is in the best part of town.

It is an hour's travelling from the hotel to the Coliseum.

Business hotel good. Tourist hotel bad.

Well, when we booked the hotel it was of a very good price in compare with the center prices,we were a family with a special needs for a wheel chair, the offer of the room came with breakfast, the rooms were okay, 6/10 for cleanliness, beds were comfy and okay, rooms view were pleasent, toilets were good and clean, the only baaaad experiences we had were the inconvenience of transportation, far from the center and cost alot for every day journey around 50 € returnt way by taxi, we couldn't even use public transportation as the hotel was up the hill and that was hard to move for a wheel chair.

Regarding breakfast, the good part was the coffee as you will wake up dieing to have a cup of coffe in the morning, put in mind no water boiler available at rooms nor coffee or tea, food was poor, so we enjoyed only the cacke and biscuits.

Super market was about 7 mins walking from hotel, but again coming back with groceries up to the hill, was a helll..

Only MC available down the hill..

So I would only recommend this hotel for 2 light couples with light stuff, who do not have any prob. walking or catching up public transport. For disabled or children might be a non convenient experince.

The atmosphere of the hotel is very quite..

We checked into the Black Hotel on the 10 October 2013. The room was clean and the bed was comfortable. The rooms are small but who comes to Rome to stay in the room. The hotel is clean and breakfast is provided every morning from 7-10 am. The air conditioning is rationed and controlled from the reception area to what they feel is adequate. If you like a cold room you will need to ask for local control. The staff is easy to deal with and very accommodating. The hotel is up on a hill and the once on the property it is pretty safe. The road up the hill is somewhat seedy. We found a few ladies of the night working on the road up from the bus stop. This activity is a late night activity and the signs of its practice are underfoot on the road. There is no food (other than McDonalds) and a super market within walking distance. The hotel has a shuttle that takes you to the metro ( 4 hourly trips) every morning. The metro is easy to master and the mas-transit system will take you to all the Rome tourist sites. Pick pockets are prevalent but with caution and situational awareness they are not really a problem. Make sure you buy your Euros stateside as Italian change houses charge unreasonable rates. The food is great and if you like pasta, it's all over......Pizza is a big thing here as well as cafe coffee. Pastries are great. Beware of illegal taxi drivers. If you use them, agree to an amount before you get in. The internet has sever shuttle services that will transport you from the airport to your hotel for reasonable rates. The Black hotel will also (upon request) arrange for private transportation. Average cost of transportation during our visit was 30 to 50 Euro from the airport to the Black hotel.

Room Tip: All the rooms were good

We came to this hotel after a night in a hotel in central Rome that really was substandard and very expensive. So we were very pleased by the standard of this modern and clean accommodation. Although it is a train and bus ride from Termini Station in central Rome, it was worth it once we got there. (The instructions on the website weren't very clear about where to go once you got off the bus) We had a room that came with breakfast in the morning and we found this to be of excellent quality and it offered us many different things to choose from.

The man on the desk, when we checked in and out, was very efficient but he tended to get quite short with guests when he was under pressure at busy times of the day, such as in the morning when people were checking out. The driver of the courtesy van was very kind and friendly though. We were quite disappointed that the pool had been closed when we stayed, as it was still very hot in Rome at that time.

We stayed on the 29-30th of September 2013 fortunately we only had to stay for 2 nights but this was more than enough. As the hotel was dirty, full of ants, the food was poor and the staff were most unhelpful. Also the room maintaince was non exsistent as the shower both leaked and flooded the room, the drain was blocked and the handset for the shower was dangerous as it was split open. All of these points were reported to reception and nothing was actioned and no alternate room was offered. On top of this we were informed we had to pay a further 3euro pppn!!!! I can't stress enough do not stay here!!!!
