“Excellent location, Very Good hotel staff, Average Room, Poor facilities and terrible wi-fi!”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 September 2013

This hotel has the friendliest (and very knowledgeable) reception staff and felt quite welcomed during our arrival. We managed to check it earlier too. The receptionist took the time to draw out a map and offer tips on moving about etc (which was quite a refreshing change considering our stay at most european hotels). The rooms were slightly disspointing (some power points not working, small TV, small shower cubicle, ageing facilities,) and towels were never changed. The breakfast affair was a very limited selection and a bit crammed into a small room which was also a bar that never opened after breakfast times. The hotel staff were happy to buzz us in and out at whatever time of the day. The location of the hotel is very convenient, within walking distance to the vatican city (5 mins) and metro station (1 min). The wi-fi signal was not poor which is weird considering the hotel is small and laid out on one floor. Overall, the hotel still needs some bit of work!

In twenty years of visiting Rome this is the worst hotel I have had the misfortune to stay in.
The hotel is central enough and the secure entrance is secure during the day when asked who you are but at night you are just buzzed in. The staff on at night appear to find guests an inconvenience and seem less than happy if you come back after 11pm. The main receptionists are very pleasant and helpful.
Breakfast is ok and coffee is handed over with barely a smile, you just want to get out as quickly as possible as the atmosphere is so poor.
The room was ok in size but a bit faded and the lighting very poor, low wattage or not working. The shower could flood the bathroom if the spray hit the door of the cubicle. Towels were never replaced, even if thrown in the bidet they were just hung up to dry. On arrival used soap and shower gel packet in shower so obviously not cleaned beforehand, bottom of shower doors badly needing a good clean.
Purchasing Internet access was a waste of time as the signal was so poor, I would have been better going across to McDonalds.
The safe did not work and the air conditioning was ineffective.
The location was about all that could be described as good. A big disappointment after reading other reviews. Never again, I love Rome and I am glad it was not a first visit.

My husband, son and I stayed here for 7 nights and were very pleased. It was a typical European B&B type room that was clean, the staff were very pleasant and helpful, and the breakfast was a great way to start the day (delicious cappuccino!). You can't beat the location ... we were very close to the Ottaviano Metro station and there were several very good restaurants near the hotel. Based on other reviews, we opted not to try the for-fee wi-fi offered by the hotel and found a Western Union office nearby with Internet service for 1.50/hour (warning - bring your hand sanitizer). The only downside was the lack of air conditioning or fans in our room. While we were in Rome, the temperature reached 31 degrees C (88 F) and the room got pretty warm.

This is a quaint, family run hotel that is perfectly located close to the Vatican and a Metro Station (Ottaviano). To be honest, it's really just a B&B. With 5 or 6 small rooms, on one floor off the reception area. As there are only three tables, in a very small dining room/bar area, breakfast is a little chaotic in the morning. We chose to skip and find breakfast in the city. The bar was never open in the time we stayed. It would have been nice to have a nightcap before going to bed. Its something we usually do on our trips. The rooms are clean, although we did have a bad smell coming from the drains from time to time and the shower could have been cleaner. Overall we would recommend this hotel for its location and reasonable price. The family that run it are very nice, but some of their staff are a bit surly. Smile !!

My husband and I stayed here for 3 nights and couldn't be more pleased. It was very clean, very quiet (low season at the end of Feb.) and it is close to the Vatican and the subway. The staff were always helpful and polite. The breakfast buffet had a very nice selection - I really liked the yogurt and the chocolate croissants.

The best thing about Il Gattopardo Relais is the location, but there are  MANY bad things. Our family spent a week in three rooms, so we got to see a lot of the spaces.

Pros
-very close to the Vatican and the Ottaviano metro stop, which is admittedly very nice
-the staff seem to try hard, according to their ability, and although they spoke little English they were nice and always willing to try to help...

Cons
-the rooms were riddled with major problems: not clean, dirty linens in the closet (why would you do that?), broken and ridiculously designed shower that caused leaking onto the floor, no counterspace to speak of, beds so hard that half of us (fit people) were in some pain, etc
-effectively no Internet access. It worked about 5% of the time and was extremely slow... Yet they charge you 10 euros for 12 hours!
-staff were not really able to help with anything but the basics; certainly couldn't act as any kind of concierge. And virtually no English which is of course not a problem for all travelers but a bit surprising in a major tourist area of Rome.
-very poor circulation, with no HVAC system: this was a big mistake in their renovation that I am sure was done to save money but caused issues. The air quality in the rooms seemed poor immediately and several of us had allergy problems. All complained of the inability to keep a consistent room temperature through the night

I would agree with another reviewer who said that fundementally many of the problems come from a cheap owner, but this was an extremely bad experience. I would normally have accepted less than good for value or the location but our living conditions practically ruined our trip

Very nice B&B, with good service and kind personnel. Rooms always clean, fine bathrooms, tv. You can always have breakfast, when you want, without risking to miss it, if you have overslept. And, of course, the location is very central, 5 min to vatican, 2 steps to the metro Ottaviano. Lots of cafes nearby. My husband and I loved a lot our stay.
