“Only a volcano eruption could come between me and the Villa Spalletti Trivelli”
Reviewed 30 April 2010

My husband was traveling on business and I was tagging along. We were supposed to spend seven nights at the Villa Spalletti Trivelli but we were stalled in London due to the volcano eruption in Iceland. We eventually made it to Rome, but we were left with only three nights in our trip - thank god we spent them at the Villa Spalletti Trivelli!! Arriving at this elegant hotel with its gracious staff was a wonderful reward for all the stress we expereinced over this failed business trip. They went out of their way to make our short time with them perfect. Though few of the other guest looked like they were in Rome on business, the Villa would clearly like to attract more business customers and made every effort to accommodate my husband's needs and concerns. Other reviewers have described it well (except LaPietra - what planet are they from?), so for my fellow Americans I'll described it this way: imagine that the Frick mansion in Manhattan had been turned into a twelve room hotel instead of a museum and you could stay there whenever you visited NYC? Granted, they don't have quite the same art collection, but the tapestries aren't so bad!

that sums up our stay at this wonderful hotel. The service was superb from start to finish. The staff were friendly and supportive. Our room was cleaned twice a day to a high standard and the complimentary mini-bar was refilled as required!
The hotel is in a central position in the city and within easy reach of all the main attractions. However, it is lovely and peaceful at night thanks to the large wooden shutters...you cant hear a thing!
The hotel is quiet, but this is what we wanted, small and exclusive. If you want a romantic break away without the kids then this is the place to stay. It really is truly fabulous.

My husband and I honeymooned in Italy, and our first stop was Rome. Arriving early in the morning after an all-night plane trip, we were both a bit disoriented and tired. The staff was so kind when we arrived, carrying our bags, welcoming us, and even offered us breakfast, even though we hadn't paid for it for that first morning! They also let us check-in early, and we relished a morning nap before beginning our day of sightseeing! The villa, by the way, is in a central location to all the major sights, especially the Trevi Fountain and the Colosseum.

Onto the room: it was IMMACULATE. The marble bath was spotless, the robes, slippers and towel warmer were all very cozy and wonderful, and the bed was turned down each night. The minibar was complimentary and restocked daily with juices, sodas beer, liquor and water, along with chocolates and snacks in the room. We went up to the totally unoccupied rooftop terrace late every night after dinner with our complimentary drink, talking, looking at the moon, and reflecting on our day. A perfect ending to each day that became our little routine.

I felt like this villa was a little home away from home for us on the other side of the world, and I would not hesitate to stay here again on my return to Rome. If you are visiting Rome, please stay here. You will be very happy.

Thank you to everyone on staff, especially Daniella, for your warmth and hospitality!

We just returned from a six day stay at the Villa, and only have fabulous things to say about the accomodations, level of service, sincere sense of warmth and basically everything else. We are a family of four with two teenagers, one boy and one girl, and we have travelled extensively and stayed at hotels of similar level and approach. Without question, the Villa Spalletti Trivelli is in the top category of venues for those who appreciate true quality and historic hotels, with sincere interest and follow-through by the whole staff -- from management through to housekeeping, maintenance and food service staff members -- with respect to every aspect of not only our stay at the Villa but also our complete visit to Rome itself. This included: tickets that we had asked to be reserved for places such as the Vatican and the Villa Borghese, as well as for those that were offered as a courtesy, such as to the special Caravaggio Exhibition, for which tickets were scarce; arranging for the highest quality guide from the National Trust who was an expert in the archeology and history of the City and region; scheduling a massage on short notice in the lovely fitness and wellness facilities; expert housekeeping services; transfer arrangements; restaurant reservations; and, much more. Our rooms were tasteful, quiet and comfortable. We could wax on, but additional writing would be superfluous -- in short, the Villa Spalletti Trivelli "made" our trip!! We have absolutely no idea on what basis the previous poster was writing his or her review, but we only can respectfully opine that we would think it an anomaly.

On awakening, you half expect to find an undertaker hovering over you with his measuring tape.
This hushed 12-room hotel is a monumental building, proudly packed with antiques and vast portraits in one of the best positions in Rome -- and yet entirely lacking human warmth or a personal touch. Or indeed any sign of humans, period. An overpowering sense that one has arrived in a final rest home for the very old and very rich. The door to the street is permanently locked, and can only be opened by some poor soul who has to skip down a small flight of stairs -- there is no entry buzzer here. Doubtless essential security in order to protect the beautiful clocks and heirlooms displayed in the public rooms of this former grand family home. But a rather stifling effect if you like to take short strolls only to have to ring for re-entry each and every time.
Reception staff are competent but no-one seemingly at the overall controls to give you a sense of welcome or context -- sort of like the Marie Celeste -- still sailing on course, but no sign of life on deck. Small niggling details seemingly overlooked:- a request for a quiet room cheerfully ignored (there is no double-glazing here to deaden the traffic noise although the wooden shutters probably help), no "don't disturb" sign in the room despite an assurance it existed, a huge flat-screen tv rendered useless by a remote control with flat batteries (this discovered only at midnight), an "honor bar" (a misnomer since drinks are complimentary) in the lounge where many drinks were available but no basic mixers like tonic water and so on. All of these could surely be remedied by the pressing of a call button somewhere. But, at 360 euros a night for a single, one rather resented this sort of sloppiness. In great contrast to the lavish decorations downstairs, the bedroom was frugally furnished with the sort of "antiques" you see in the local flea market. Bare floors with a scrubby little bedside rug. A spacious and comfortable bathroom -- but a shame so much money spent on the travertine walls and so little on sound-proofing the bedroom.
Villa Spalletti Trivelli and its prized possessions are in the lead role -- the guests mere bit-players with, at best, walk-on parts.

Surangi, Proprietario at Villa Spalletti Trivelli, responded to this review, 4 April 2010
Very funny! Razor-sharp wit together with a sort of presumptuous, academic (?) attitude to show off, by which Villa SpallettiTrivelli is definitely and grossly misrepresented, anyway. Also a disappointing "talent" waste considering the trivial, though so well magnified issues. Mainly, one might argue, based on inner frustrations and, why not, petty sarcasm: a kind of Jack Torrence's (Kubrick's "Shining") most feared nightmares coming true rather than constructive criticism presented in a non-emotional way, Or it might be simply the eager attitude to whine, whatever reason...!

Good writing, nonetheless. Congratulations!

P.S.: The Reviewer might pardon us for our slender skills in Shakespeare's language, as well. By the way, it could be interesting an exchange in Dante's language, for a change...

The Villa Spalletti Trivelli is a very nice located small Hotel in central Rome. With respect to all the superb Tripadvisor reviews we reserved our stay for a couple of days in the Villa. We booked in advance directly with the Villa Spalletti over their Homepage and later by E-Mail. Everything worked well in advance, we paid a non refundable deposit and got our booking confirmation by the same day. Fine!

Currently we're back from our several days trip from the capital of Italy. Thankfully we had amazing days in Rome, but unexpectedly we were nearly but not 100% satisfied in the Villa Spalletti. If you like, please find our pros and cons below; it's our personal impression after 4 days in Rome:

Pros from our point of view:
-------------------------------------
- the geographic location is amazing; you can reach all major sightseeing places and local hot spots of Rome by foot (if you like) ... or taxi
- the whole Villa is in an excellent condition, well refurbished and like "a home of a wealthy knight / nobleman in the mediaeval times"
- need to say in other words again: the guest rooms, the living rooms, the corridor: everything is very noble and build with high premium quality
- the hamman is very generous and authentic designed. Nearby (in the Villa) is a well invested fitness room.
- all materials in our room were selected with high value as well: the king size bed, the bed-linen, Flat- TV, the nice wooden floor, the exclusive bath-room with a shower, bath tub, 2 washbowls, a
bidet, the exclusive free cosmetics...
- the complimentary minibar service was highly appreciated as well: we had a daily refill, the choice of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks were broad. Only wine and champagne is not inclusive.
- in the afternoons and evenings we had very tastefully and complimentary tea- times in the living room. Very nice atmosphere near to the fireplace. Gorgeous!
- if the weather is nice you shouldn't miss the well-kept garden from the Villa Spalletti ... what a nice place for a short break
- regarding the fact that the Villa only offer 12 rooms everything is in a very convenient and private atmosphere

Cons from our point of view:
--------------------------------------
- with respect to the 5 star quality standard of the Villa we experienced a staff with appreciable english language problems - we're not english native speakers as well but we had multiple "language challenges" with different people of the Hotel regarding their lack of normal english skills. Beginning with conversations problems with the front desk during the check in at our first day, continued twice in the morning when we order "an omelette with vegetables and mushrooms" e.g.
- due to the information on the Homepage of the Villa Spalletti the Fitness room and Hamman has been closed: "We inform you that our Wellness Center and Gym won't be available for the time being. Normal routine will be restaured shortly". This was the reason for us, that we left our sportswear at home. Locally I learned that both rooms are already opened for weeks... the staff member informed us "that we've forgotten to update our homepage"... yes, what a pity!
- our room had only one window - this is owing to the fact that it is an old building of course, but we like bright rooms at day time
- the room had no isolated window. Of course, the Villa is located in a more quite side street, but we heard many sounds in the night, inclusive a loud and long conversation on the street at our first night. Calm is something different.
- the room had no modern heating system, we discovered a bad moulding in colder nights with the thin blanket. Because of the fact that you need to use a fan, it wasn't silent in the room during the use.
- we are frequent travellers, but when we compare the breakfast to our other 5 star Hotel experiences in this price range... the breakfast in the Villa was a disappointment. They only offer white bread, at one weekend day the bread was dry as well, and a very small range of alternatives. The rest of the daily breakfast offer was not impressive too. Overall, this was not worth the place, additionally the service has forgotten the ordered cappuccino on two different days as well...
- in the room you will find a modern TV- System. Very modern; I hope and think that I have good technical skills, but for the beginning a remote control with empty batteries, a never seen before SKY televison modem and all information in italian language only were really challenging... additionally we found no information in the room how to call the reception from the room ("9")... later we learned that we can find it in the map with the room information - unfortunately (at least for me) only in the foreign language I cannot speak...
- our experience with the front desk was not impressive too: during the check out process the staff member answered a call and didn't ask something like "Did you enjoy you stay?"...

Our summary:
--------------------
We had good and nice days and nights in the Villa Spalletti Trivelli. But as you can see above we experienced some things we didn't like as well.

There is nothing that could be said to change my mind from stating that this is an outstanding hotel. The furnishings were fantastic, the outdoor area well maintained and the breakfast had so much variety that it was hard to choose what to have and yes it was included in the cost. If I wanted to be petty the only thing that I could suggest would be that a bit of background music whether it be in the lounge area or the breakfast room would just finish it off. The rooms were spacious with every amenity and to have a mini bar, at no charge is just something not heard of these days. The staff were always accommodating to your every request with no questions asked. I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone without hesitation.
