“San Valentino Hotel made my trip memorable.”
Reviewed 19 May 2014

I just returned from Italy on Saturday. While I was in Rome I stayed at the San Valentino Hotel from April 19 to April 27 and then again from May 10 to May 17. All of the hotel staff made me feel like family. Angela at the front desk greeted me with a big kiss and an even bigger hug. This was my second year staying at this hotel. Everyone from the front desk, to the kitchen cook and staff, the waiters, waitresses and cleaning staff always had a happy greeting for me and stopped to talk to me. Alfredo makes the best cappuccino. I call him the director of cappuccinos. He also works as a waiter and front desk clerk. The cook even invited me to stay at their home in Milano for a couple of days on my next visist. The restaurant is great with really good food, everything from pastas, seafood, steaks, pizza and more. After I was in Rome for two days I got really bad bronchitis and fever and was bed bound. Angela had someone go to the pharmacy to get me cough syrup, had someone bring me a nice chicken broth with tortalinis, snacks to eat with my antibiotics, water etc. They even called my room to see if I was okay and if I needed anything. What other hotel would go out of their way to look ater you? San Valentino will. The hotel is very well located. The subway is just around the corner and down a short block. The Vatican and St. Peter's Cathedral are only a ten minute walk away. The Spanish Steps, the Colluseum, the Pantheon, the Ancient Roman Ruins, Piazza Navone, Piazza de Popolo, Castel St. Angelo and the Bridge of Angels, the Villa Bourghesi are only short subway rides away. The beds and pillows at San Valentino are so confortable, the rooms are clean and a nice size. They always provide clean towels, soap and shampoo. I would highly recommend the San Valentino Hotel. You cannot beat the prices and the warm and incredibly hopspitable staff. On the last morning one of the waitresses made me two cappuccinos with hearts. The staff at San Valentino are truly a fantastic group of people. I commend them all. San Valentino made my vaccation even more special. A huge thank you to all the staff. I will miss you all as well as the gnocci a la sorrentina and the cappuccinos. I will return next year. If you want an well priced hotel with great food, great location and a great staff I recomend San Valentino Hotel.

Roberto from Canada

The hotel has a nice location. Vaticano (San Peter's Square), Piazza del Poppolo, Piazza Navona, Pantheon and others main points are just 10-15 minutes walking from the hotel. Other points, such as Colosseo, can be accessed easily by metro or bus. Lepanto Metro and Bus Stations are in just one square from the Hotel.

Free Wi-Fi internet is available in the hotel, but it’s impossible to use this inside the room due to a very bad signal. The staff knows about this issue and suggested us to use the internet in the lobby or in the coffee area. Even in these places sometimes we had access issues, so we opted to buy a local sim card to get total access to the internet in every part of Rome.

Friendly staff, fair breakfast and good cleanliness.

Bed/mattress and Wi-Fi connection could be improved.

Great value Hotel in Rome.

I will start by saying the only two good things about the hotel - it's location is hard to beat, and the pillows were very comfortable. Unfortunately, not enough for a good hotel experience, let alone great.

Cleanliness, however, is not their priority. When we first arrived we found the bathroom sink and bidet speckled with yellow dirt marks; we were too tired from our trip to even guess what they were, let alone try to make a fuss and change the room. We assumed that it was an oversight of the cleaning lady and wiped it off with sanitary towels. Things happen... They shouldn't, but sometimes they do, and we are certainly not ones to ring the church bells at the tiniest problem.

That night however, the full picture started to emerge when we went to bed. The bed linen had multiple little black curly hairs on it... The wool blanked was covered with all imaginable lengths and colours of human hair.

The tiles in the shower cabin were so covered with soap scum and grime that they were sticky to touch, not to mention an unsightly plastic pipe coming out right from the wall - no idea why it should be there.

The daily cleaning of the room is only an illusion - each time we came back after the cleaning had been done, even just half an hour ago, there were bits of lint and hair, and crumbs of whatever we had snacked on the previous night on the floor and the bedside tables.

Not even the sink had been cleaned - we all know that a sink after cleaning is shiny and slippery to touch. This was always sticky and grimy.

I think that all the cleaner does is make the beds, fold the used towels, and empty the bins. Once I went back to the room, because I had forgotten my umbrella and saw the cleaner about to "wash" the floor. The water in the bucket can only be described as grey and muddy.

Taking into account all these major problems, it may be insignificant to mention that the mirror had greasy marks all over, which were never cleaned, and the white door was dirty too.

Thankfully I only dined in the hotel restaurant once. The food was not great and the next day was ruined for me by a tummy problem ...

We were disgusted by this hotel experience, and no matter how friendly the hotel staff make out to be, these things should not happen. And the blonde girl at the reception in the mornings - so incompetent not to speak a word of English. Not a problem for us since 2 of our group were italian and the third (me) speaks Italian, but rather inappropriate in a hotel that hosts an international clientelle.

All in all, avoid if you can.
Oh, and I am adding a foto of the floor just after the cleaning lady had left, for visual reference

Visiting Rome to support my son running in the marathon we chose this hotel for its location close to all the main tourist sites and especially Vatican City. Rooms are more spacious than we expected and compared to Paris for example. Facilities are good, bathroom, shower, bed and nice touch small fridge. TV was the usual poor reception you get in a big City but hey who watches tv in Rome with such amazing sights to see. Generally servicec was friendly and helpful although breakfast was hit and miss. If you got up later choices were limited with only apples (pappy) by way of fruit. Although different staff on our final day saw products replenished throughout the service. Bar lounge small but fine and good bar service.
Small supermarket, bars and pizza takeway are all around. Rome is not the easiest to get around using public transport so if you use this hotel be prepared to walk.
We had a very enjoyable break here and felt it was value for money. Rome is amazing we will return. Ps marathon well organised and great for spectators!

A very friendly staff, close to most of the attractions. Ten minutes away from Vatican (walking). The room was small but with enough space to feel comfortable, very clean and new bathroom. Good breakfast and a nice coffee bar.
