Our 3 bedroom apartment is on the outskirts of Rome, just outside the GRA, the ring road encircling the city. However, there is no problem with public transport, as the bus stop is just 20 meters away from the apartment building. It can more than 30 mins getting to the city as you will have to change to the regional train at the end of the bus route. But once you get used to it, it is not a hassle and can be nice ride. Provided you avoid the rush hours in the evening (5 to 7 pm), when the crush of people in the Metro and the regional trains can be a hectic experience.
There is a convenient supermarket and pizzeria nearby with really reasonable prices. In fact Rome is far easier on the pocket compared to other European cities.
I would definitely recommend Carlo's apartment to anyone coming with a family to Rome.
