Mr Lancelotti and Skipper were the perfect hosts, and welcomed our family group to this beautiful villa. A half hour bus ride from Rome (you can see the city centre from the top of the toretta), it provided a perfect base for the family to explore at our leisure but also to be able to do justice to Rome.absolutely first class.

Torretta de Massimi provides the perfect venue for a relaxing holiday coupled with a sightseeing break. Completely secluded, the tower is located in a tranquil setting - the only things likely to interupt you are the crickets chirrping, the occasional donkey bray and the exubert Skipper a lovely little dog. Swimming under a full moon with bats swooping down to drink from the pool was a highlight. A short bus ride (20 minutes) takes you into the heart of Rome where all main toruist sites are within walking distance. The bus always seemed to be waiting for us and as it ran until midnight there was no need to hire a car. Ottavio arranged for a taxi to collect us from the airport on arrival. The charming and energetic owner, Ottavio, is a fantastic host going over and above what was required. He is knowledgeable and enthusiastic about his city and showed us many sights we would otherwise not have seen. He also makes fabulous yellow plum jam from his own organic trees and the world's best melon sorbet. The tower provides quirky, rustic accommodation over 3 floors so is only suitable for the able-bodied. The swimming pool is deep, sun-warmed and absolutely stunning although as it is not fenced off may not be ideal for those with young children who are not confident swimmers. It is the perfect place to relax after a hot day of sightseeing (or indeed instead of). The frequency of the bus means that you can enjoy evenings out in the city if desired. Torretta offers the opportunity to be a tourist and have a relaxing holiday at the same time - I cannot rate it highly enough. This place is stunning thanks to its setting and fantastic host.

A great place to stay! Slightly quirky, rustic, offering peace and tranquility with the benefit of a deep pool and lots of outside space, ideal after a long day walking around the city, or even instead of. The transfer to the city centre by bus is convenient and there is a good local supermarket (both a ten minute walk). The english-speaking owner is absolutely charming and very helpful, organising taxis, Restaurants, a cook if required, and dealing with any queries. Ideal for a family and friends stay (but would be disappointing if you really want fluffy white towels and the sheets changed every other day).

Staying at Torretta de’Massimi was the most magical experience imaginable! From the very beginning, Ottavio (the owner, who we liked to call “il Principe” haha) treated us like royalty! He took every effort to make us feel at home. Which is perfect because it made us feel like our vacation started from the first minute we stepped into the stunning Italian villa! The house is beautiful in every way- it is the pinnacle of a home you would want when vacationing in Italy. Picture this: the whole house is blessed with all around views of gorgeous Italian landscapes and the rooms are warm, inviting and beautifully laid out. Through my eyes, staying at the Torretta de’Massimi makes for the perfect vacation in Rome. It is close enough to the city center that you can easily drive down and spend the day exploring the many beauties of Rome. Within 10 minutes driving, you can be in Trastevere, one of Rome’s liveliest neighborhoods. And from Trastevere you are really walking distance from most of Rome’s most important monuments! For instance, we walked from Trastevere to Campo dei Fiori, Piazza Navona, the Pantheon and the Trevi Fountain. From the Trevi Fountain, you are not that far from the Spanish Steps and the Piazza del Popolo. From Trastevere you are also pretty close to the Vatican and Castel Sant’Angelo.

Despite its proximity to the city center, it is also far enough that it makes for a delicious retreat into the Roman countryside. At Torretta De’Massimi, you seriously feel like you are in an Italian oasis. After being immersed in hustle and bustle of the city, and after the tons of walking we did to see the many, many sites that Rome has to offer, it was absolutely wonderful to come back to Torretta De’Massimi. We felt immediately relaxed, enchanted and at home every time we walked into the beautiful villa. We really felt that staying at Torretta de’Massimi gave us the best of both worlds: the city experience and the countryside experience. We just feel so much gratitude for all of Ottavio’s help and for having had the opportunity to stay at Torretta De’Massimi. We look back on our trip with so much tenderness and appreciation and we cannot wait to return! Torretta de’Massimi was simply magical and I would recommend this stunning Italian oasis to anyone. I have no doubt that you will make beautifully unforgettable memories at la Torretta de’Massimi.

p.s. We stayed in the Villa, but Ottavio also offers the Medieval Tower for rent. Since the tower was unoccupied, Ottavio was gracious enough to give us a tour. I must say that the Tower is so much fun!! It has jaw-dropping views, beautiful rooms, a light and airy kitchen, its own private pool, an entertainment room and an overall air of adventure and delight!

I initially booked a swish hotel in the heart of Rome but was undecided about it as the weather is quite nice in September and it occurred to me that we may want some outdoor space if the weather lived up to expectations. Thank god I took that into account, because the week we stayed at Torretta it was circa 25-28C every day!
We arranged for Ottavio’s driver to meet us at the airport which worked out well. He was there on time and had a card with my name on.
When we arrived at the property we were spellbound as it was beaming sunshine across beautiful grounds with different properties, olive groves, and the tower with amazing lawns on either side, and a huge 40ft by 10ft pool!
Ottavio showed us around and told us about the history of the estate. We later discovered that his father is one of the most respected and famous noblemen in Rome, but we wouldn’t have known this other than being informed; Ottavio is a very friendly and down to earth gentleman and he made us feel at ease and completely at home.
The estate is full of wildlife, we took apples and carrots to the donkeys several times and they were really friendly. There are lots of interesting birds including parrots that fly around all the time as well as lizards, bats, huge toads and of course Skipper, Ottavio’s absolutely fantastic little Jack Russell! Ottavio had to drag him away from us because we were fussing over him and petting him and he was happy to be around.
The estate is located five minutes walk from a decent sized supermarket and ten minutes maximum from a bus stop where you can catch the 881 (I think) directly into Rome. The bus is extremely regular; we were quite surprised by the convenience of the service. There is a little bar next to where you catch the bus and they serve hot and cold snacks and drinks and of course ice cream!
We had dinner one night with Ottavio and all of his friends, sitting outside at a candlelit table eating homemade pasta and drinking prosceco. What a fabulous experience and something that really added a special feeling to our holiday.
Coming back to such a beautiful location after a hectic day in Rome was amazing. Having said that we also found it difficult to get motivated to get ready to head out because we were enjoying lounging in the sun and having a dip!
The tower is rustic and the furnishings are basic, but it is sufficiently equipped and also has loungers and a barbecue to make the most of the lovely outdoor space.
It was a difficult decision regarding where to stay for our week long holiday in Rome but I am delighted that I took a slight gamble by choosing to stay at Torretta Massimi with Ottavio and Skipper. This was an authentic Roman experience and unforgettable.

The tower's grounds were the highlight of our holiday - there were woods to wander in and a (very chilly in April) swimming pool for the children to splash in. (Beware - the pool is very deep with no shallow end.) We were able to pick grapefruit for breakfast, and the smell of orange blossom scented the air.
One long, uncomfortable bus journey later we were at St. Peters. The contrast between the noisy city and the tower's nature reserve location made this a very interesting holiday, and it was fantastic having such a large garden for the children to play in after a day's sightseeing. The biggest dilemma each day was deciding whether we wanted to go into the city at all or stay at home for the day.
The tower is near to a big estate of tower blocks, which means that security has been taken seriously - although the tower's own grounds are very rural the surroundings are not.

The owner was the most hospitable helpful host you could wish for, who spoke good English and for whom no question or request was too much trouble.

The tower itself was furnished with quiet understatement - nothing was poor quality but it was not opulent and we didn't have to worry about the children damaging things. The one area where we would have appreciated more was in the kitchen, where there were not many saucepans or bowls and no kettle. Apart from that we had everything we needed or wanted.

As each room was on a different floor it did mean there were a lot of stairs to climb up and down, so it would not be suitable for anyone with mobility or fitness problems. In particular, the internal staircase from the ground floor is an extremely narrow spiral staircase - but there is an alternative external staircase.

We were woken by birdsong and each evening we watched the bats swooping round the grounds and over the pool.

I would highly recommend this location to anyone who wants to visit Rome but does not fancy an inner city location or wants a big garden, or to a group where some members want to sightsee and others want space to play outdoors.
