“Ali is an exceptional host but the hotel seriuosly needs a new look”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 July 2013

We were looking for a 3 star hotel with budget in mind and booked here based on the glowing reviews but were utterly disappointed. Ours was a triple room with attached bath. There was no dearth of hospitality and it pains me to give 2 stars when you have such a welcoming and helpful host in Ali. Ali immensely helped us with directions to nearby restaurants, supermarkets and pharmacies and with itinerary planning but I cannot write anything nice about the facility.

Make no mistake - this is a hostel and not a hotel of a B&B type! Rooms have a tired look. There is no aircon - we didn't need one fortunately. Plug points are sparse and hidden behind shelves etc. You could either operate the 16" screen TV or the fan as there was only one power source. The room was so cramped that we had to use the child's bed to stove our luggage. There are no paid laundry facilities. There are no lifts either. I could barely manage to move inside the shower, the piping was leaking and water was on the floor. The windows are a century old and do not shut - we had some mosquitos too. The breakfast was apalling - we just had the tea; croissants gave a stale feeling (no butter or jam provided). Apart from tea, there was an awful juice and that was all! I was asking myself if 220Euros for two nights was too small a sum for a broken property in a desolate location.

The nearest metro San Giovanni is a 25 minute walk on footpaths that are full of excreta and smell of urine - this is the same story if you walk in any direction within a 1-km radius centred around the hotel. The buses towards the metro are infrequent and can't be spotted on a Sunday. I feel sorry for Ali to write this review beacause there is potential for this place to strike big with such good staff. May be most of the people coming here do not spend enough time in the rooms - unfortunately for us, our daughter fell ill and we were confined indoors for two days and could only feel happy checking out!

Hotel Lodi was the starting point of our tour of Italy and having chosen all of our accommodation through 'hostelworld' we didn't really know what to expect. We definitely made a good choice (thankfully, as we were to return at the end of our tour before flying home)! The hotel was excellent - rooms are basic but well furnished and decorated, beds were comfortable and the en-suites, although dated, were perfectly functional.

Breakfast was excellent - a choice of hot drinks freshly made by the staff and delivered to the table with delicious fruit juice and a selection of croissants/pastries (2 per person). Breakfast could be eaten outside in the beautiful garden or in the common room, which contains a couple of computers and small selection of books.

Staff were incredibly friendly and helpful, giving an in-depth but speedy explanation of the city using their free city maps, phoning for taxis, advising on booking Rome's many attractions and and making our breakfast early so we could catch out flight home. A small kitchen can be used to make quick snacks and small meals (sink, fridge, microwave, electric ring for pans, plates/cutlery/glasses etc).

As the hotel is located out of the city, it is a 5 minute walk to/from bus stops giving easy and cheap access to the rest of the city via bus/metro (in Rome 1,50€ gives 100 minutes of continuous travel on any combination of bus/metro/tram - more than enough to reach the furthest areas of the city centre).

We felt the hotel/hostel provided very good value and would definitely visit again.

Room Tip: Rooms 2 & 6 are nearly identical, containing a double and two single beds, with an en-suite show...

this is a family run charming homely hotel a little away from centre of Rome but very accessible.we traveled to other places in Italy but the breakfast is the best at Lodi-the croissants are amazing-filled with chocolate and cream -heavenly ! More than friendly and helpful -Ali we enjoyed your company and chat.Even Gabrialdi (hope i got that right) who checked us in.Oh check-in and out is a breeze.Taxi-in 3minutes flat.Wi-fi with the PCs for people to use.
Rooms have all that a tired (Rome makes for a hectic sight-seeing) traveller needs.Hot water, towels, nice beds,quiet-slept like a log.
They were sweet to send me tea in the room one night when we were very tired. Will never forget it.Thanks...
Around there are many nice eating places -dont miss eating at via osteriana-2good places.
Metro is the best way to travel.

Room Tip: Ours on first floor from which you can see the breakfast garden is good !

We booked Hotel Lodi after reading all the other reviews on here, and most of them are spot on. The hotel is a bit out of town, and is definitely more a hostel than hotel but to be honest that is part of the charm - the area nearby is great for nightlife and food, and it is not far to the nearest Metro. Head into town on the bus, Metro or by foot for the sights and then escape back to the hotel to sit and relax in the garden. The staff are great - Ali made us feel very welcome, and helped us with great advice about how to plan our trip. Can't recommend the place enough!

stayed from 16th to 20th june

hotel lodi.....where can i start?? it is a lovely hotel with a nice homely touch to it. its small, pretty and beautiful.
located a little away from central sights like pantheon, but is very close to san giovanni metro station (10 min walk) which gives u access to many tourist attractions. colosseum is also a 25 min walk on lovely streets of rome. its located in a local area amongst residential buildings, giving u a nice quite atmosphere and piece of mind. many pizzerias and restaurants nearby, supermarkets also.
when we arrived, Gabrielle and Ali were more than helpful in orienting us. they were very sweet and caring, gave us all information and service and are very approachable.

the hotel serves one of the best croissants i had during my trip in italy for breakfast in a lovely garden behind the hotel. the hotel not only provides free wi-fi but also computers! (dont have to fiddle with the small screen of the phone)

the room is small but cozy, with a view of the garden, and is kept very very neat and tidy. we got a good nights sleep after tiresome days in rome and vatican as the weather is very cool and the area is silent at night, without any disturbances.

all this for a really good price.
The Best Budget Hotel in Rome, more than value for money.
excellent stay, amazing experience.

This place is neat, clean and a great hotel. What makes it most special is the friendly staff, especially Ali. He was the most helpful person we met on this trip, so much that we became good friends with him. He helped us plan our day to day sightseeing and also helped us pick places for the evening where we could get a drink and indulge in a bit of unwinding.

Tip : To get the best rates, I recommend you booked the room on the hotel’s website as it offers the best rates compared to all other websites it is listed on. What you’ll get is free wi-fi, they have computers at the lobby level in case you want to surf the net for free. The breakfast is complimentary and includes a basket of croissants, juice and coffee. There is shared accommodation as well as individual accommodation with private bathroom available for a very reasonable price. Hotel Lodi is located in the city yet offers the best rates I’ve seen!

There is a super market right next door so you can pick up your supply of fruits and other daily eatables if you like. The bus stop is about 5 mins walk if you want to head to the Colosseum or the Vatican.

Ali gave us a map and helped us with information on the places we could see, how we could buy tickets from the Archeological Park next to the Colosseum (which is usually crowded) and also how purchasing tickets online for the Vatican would be a better bet than to stand in a long queue. All the tips and tricks made our life easier. We were here for 3 nights and it was a pleasure staying at this gem of a hotel and we hope to come back!

Room Tip: Ask for a room that is not road facing as it is quiter

Absolutely Amazing Staff be it Ali, Claudio or the part timers !!!! They were a very very important part of why our trip was such a success!!! The hotel deserves a 7 star rating as you are made to feel so welcome and special. They give you a wonderful start to your day with a lovely smile and an ample italian breakfast in a little garden filled with birdsong !!! Ali , who is a very experienced and senior staff member and speaks excellent English went out of his way to help us and make our stay memorable.Be it remembering that me and the girls liked hot chocolate or helping to open our bag when we accidentally left our keys in and then providing us with a new lock pronto ...to packing up delicious croissants for us ( which by the way arrive each morning at 4 a.m each day...super fresh !!!!) when we were leaving and did not have time for breakfast and even a request for more towels was fulfilled ....ALWAYS READY TO HELP AND SMILING ......He gave us a map , sectioned it out into four quadrants and gave easy directions on how to get where and the best times to go. ALSO, where NOT to go and to be aware of pickpockets...Claudio had some lovely suggestions for day trips too.. The hotel is about 10-12 mins from 2 metros...Rio de roma and San Giovanni .There are bus stops close by to connect you to the terminus. A green grocer and a spar store just a minute away to buy basic picnic stuff..I will not go into details( bus nos, tram nos or streets) as you will be told all when you check in there THIS PLACE IS SERIOUSLY SUPERB!!!! The lovely patio where you have breakfast with birdsong around you ...a quiet neighbourhood with coloured houses and lemon and orange trees heavy with fruit and the scent of jasmine in the air ..a cute park where doggies come for a run/walk( we loved it ..met some nice people there)..A VERY GOOD AND AFFORDABLE PIZZERIA is nearby for lunch or dinner options...go straight on from the hotel down La Spezia...after 2 traffic lights.keep looking to the left..small little door..great beer too!!!!.A few nice restaurants as well...We had a quad room on the 2nd floor with a view of the patio and street and park...!!!!Room size was very good , beds very comfortable and of a good size....My husband is tall and large and his feet did not stick out of the bed or the covers which says a lot...and bathroom was quaint and manageable...plenty of water and toiletries were adequate.Large windows to let in fresh air and light.. There is free wifi and an equipped kitchen We had a superb stay and it added to the quality of our holiday!!!!
