“Little Gem!”
Reviewed 12 September 2013

My husband & I have just returned from a 4 night stay at the Hotel Ivanhoe. After reading a few previous reviews I went with an open mind and have to say that we were both pleasantly surprised.
I had followed suggestions from another post, which advised that I emailed the hotel requesting a private transfer to the hotel. We did this before leaving and received a very speedy reply from Dimitri, confirming the transfer service. It cost 50 euros, which is good value for a private driver to pick you up from the airport and take you straight to the hotel, especially when an ordinary taxi was 48 euros anyway.
The hotel was as we had expected, a reasonable sized room with a double bed. The shower is a little small, however it wasn't enough to make too much of a comment as we hardly spent much time in the room or shower when the wonderful city of Rome is on the doorstep. The breakfast was more than enough with fresh croissants, fruit, meats, cereals & much more. On the first day Christina, who was very lovely, gave us a map of the city and highlighted a few popular sight seeing areas and what the best routes were to take. This was brilliant as we could see from the map that the location of the hotel was right on the doorstep to most of the attractions.
Before mentioning a few tips of places to visit I would like to make a special announcement for Dimitri! What a fantastic gentleman! During the early evening when returning from a fully day of sight seeing he offered us some delicious home made cookies!! Each night he greeted us with a huge smile and another cookie. The best of all was that Dimitri recommended some restaurants very close to the hotel giving us a 10% discount card. The restaurants recommended where absolutely fantastic, the food was delicious, the service was fabulous and even without the discount the price for the dinner was very reasonable. So I would like to say a huge thank you for recommending the restaurants, and for our pleasant stay.

I would like to leave a few tips to those who are visiting Rome for the first time. The restaurants and bars around the Via Cavour road are very reasonable and have some great staff. If you can, avoid dinning around the Vatican and Casteli area, or expect to pay high prices (2 sandwiches, an ice tea and 1 beer cost 35 euros!.)
People complained about the queues for the Colosseum, but we went around 5pm and there was no queue at all, especially as the weather is so good in Rome at the moment there is no need to go early, you are still able to see everything.
There is just one more thing, be careful who you ask to take a picture, around there Trevi fountain there are some people who offer to take your picture, take them and then want you to pay them for taking it, these people are also the ones trying to sell you roses for over the odds.

I'm sure you will have a great time staying at the hotel Ivanhoe, we sure did and if we return to Rome we will definitely stay here again! Ciao.

I stayed here for 5 nights and have found it to be a great place - only 4 floor of guest rooms, with a rooftop terrace for the free prosecco at the end of a day's sightseeing, and for breakfast in the sunshine. The ground floor has a little bar and the breakfast room - all very adequate. I booked as a single traveller and was given a very small room - which is the same size as my (very nice) bathroom. The regular double rooms look good though (I peered in when the maids were cleaning my neighbours' rooms). The staff have been extremely friendly as helpful and the location is awesome - a short walk from Termini train station and a short walk to the Centro Storico one way and the Colosseum the other way. Perfect location in my view.

Great location, felt safe in the area, was not impressed with room had to be moved from a dirty room 12 which we refused to stay in. Room 44 was better although the shower was far too small to be useable really. Staff were fantastic and this made up for the rooms. The breakfast was good although more choice would be good.

Room Tip: room 44 was better than 12

I really do agree with a couple of the other reviews of this hotel in that you get what you pay for. I was travelling around Italy with one of my friends through August, and Rome was our last stop. We booked the Hotel Ivanhoe after reading reviews on Expedia and Trip Advisor, and I have to say that we really enjoyed our stay.

The hotel is in a lovely area, not far from Termini Train Station so we were able to walk there, also close to the Colosseum, the Vittoriano and the Cavour Metro station as well as some bus stops. There were also some lovely restaurants around, and a nice little gelato shop. Breakfast was included, and although it was basic, it was lovely and served us really well. The staff were always really friendly, and I don't know the two girls names who were often behind the reception desk but they were both really lovely and SO helpful!

The hotel is small, but it was perfect for us, and in general when on a city break you don't need to spend time in your room other than for sleeping. The bathroom was small, and the shower was really tiny - possibly the only downside I can think of about this hotel - I think a 6ft male would struggle, as we were two girls and we found it small but manageable. The hotel and the room were really clean, and our towels were changed everyday. We didn't notice any noise at night as mentioned in some of the other reviews, but perhaps this was due to the location of our room? The air conditioning was great, and was always a welcome treat when we returned to our rooms after a hard days sightseeing! The minibar in the room was also good (as mentioned in other reviews), the drinks were really reasonably priced (€1.50 for a bottle of water for example), and had a good selection of drinks.

I would definitely recommend this hotel. As I say, we didn't have any problems. I just don't know whether I would have been able to put up with the shower for much more than 4 nights.

Booked this holiday on impulse and it was amazing!! The hotel is lovely as are the staff, they cannot do enough for you. Dimitri and Cristiana the recepition staff are two of the best staff i have come across, they are extremely lovely people!! The hotel is in the perfect area for all the favourite historical sites, the coloseum is just five minutes walk away, and you also get a map on arrival anyway. You get all the usual ammenities WiFi is free and also close to the Cavour Metro which is very easy to use. The breakfast is fab and there is also a roof top terrace where you can take your breakfast and use it later for a glass of wine at nite, fantastic. Will definately come back to this hotel, everyone should try it!! Also amazingly cheap resteraunts very close by. Excellant in every way.

This hostel is hard to find but when you do it is well worth it. Its a small hostel but the very welcoming and hospitable. Dont miss the group dinner. They have nice free computers and the owner made free snacks and drinks for the guests. Its a short walk to many places to visit in Rome and the staff are more than accomidating to help you find anything you want to visit. This Is my favorite place in Rome and one of the best places in Italy to intermingle with fellow travelers.

Room Tip: The dorms are all surrounding the common area which is a great place to chill and hang out.
