Eurostars St. John

I want to point out that this is only my personal opinion. Others have their expectations and needs. At time of booking I had made research in advance, and found that hotels in Rome are expensive. That said I expect more of a hotel based on the price I paid to Eurostars St. John. For a night rate over €150 this hotel has too many drawbacks. But let me start with the good things:

-Nice room, a bit cramped, but with what you need for a short stay. Everything looked clean.
-Safety box, minibar, desk, closet with hangers and extra pillows and blanket.
-Satisfactory lightened room.
-Limited selection for breakfast, but was enough for me to start the day. Not much bread selection, but much pastry, some fruit, cereals, good coffee, ham, cheese, salami, egg, bacon.
-Mostly helpfull and friendly staff at reception and in the breakfast room, shame the last accident happened...
-Fast check-in & out.
-Silent room facing street.

And so the downsides:
-Rock hard beds. I like it on the hard side, but this was too much even for me. The day we left I had serious back pain.
-Cramped bathroom. VERY inconvenient placed toilet. The both of us staying in our room had problems using it, because it was placed too near the wall and the shower cabinet. The big toilet paper hanger, sanitary pad bag box and phone did it even more cramped and uncomfortable.
-The shower cabinet also was so small that it was not possible to bend over. The only good was the sink and the water pressure and temperature.
-Anoying climate control. Turned it off, but it starts again after few minutes. Asked reception to turn it off permanently. They did, but after a few hours it started again. Tried to set it to 24 degrees, but it does not help. Froze every night. We really did not have a good sleep quality at this hotel. And if you need to restitute and sleep longer in the morning, be warned about fussy maids! They did not have respect for the «Do not disturb»-sign, and did not tidy up our room one day. The other days they only fixed the bed and replaced the handtowels. The last day they told us they finished their job day at 14.00.
-Anoying wifi. Had to log on with username and password every time I waked up my iPhone/iPad from standby... And that was MANY times daily...
-No available power outlets. Had to use an outlet dedicated for a lamp to charge my smartphone.
-Much garbage in the street at the entrance are to the hotel. They should clean up to give a better impression of the hotel. Rome is full of garbage by the way. Not a problem just here.

At check out we asked the reception to call for a "white official taxi". They called their private driver. This was more expensive than the official taxi. We were in advance aware about that this con could happen in Rome, but it is hard to see it in time and say "NO!" when they take your luggage and place it in the car before you see it not is a regular taxi. The day before we should leave we asked them to book place for us at a airport minibus shuttle service. The morning we should leave they told us the shuttle service had called and cancelled our booking. I think the hotel never booked anything to us, and speculated in their own service.
Unacceptable practice of the hotel, and I therefor give one star less in this review.

Will I go back? No! Absolutely not! Mostly because of the painful bed and the location of the hotel, that we found to be too far from the city centre to walk the distance. But also because of inconvenient solutions in room and not a good enough customer treatment.

Originally We booked this hotel because we thought it was within walking distance to the Rome Termini, but we quickly found out that with luggage and all it was not convenient to walk, had we known that the Manzoni Metro stop was a short walk from the hotel, we may have gone that route, but we took a cab for 13 euros.

We stayed here for 6 days while we were in Rome. As we became more comfortable with the location, it was great. A walk to the Coliseum, the Forum and Saint John de Laterno. The rooms were adequate, we were in the back overlooking the school yard but the soundproofing was so good unless the windows were open, you couldn't hear the children. The housekeeping staff made up the rooms beautifully every day, so when we returned from a long day out walking and sightseeing it was well appreciated.

The staff was extremely helpful and pleasant, ready and willing to help with recommendations and suggestions. The morning breakfast had several choices and the fresh ricotta was extremely delicious!

As our stay went on, we enjoyed that it wasn't in the middle of Rome because at the end of the day it was a nice respite. Local neighborhood restaurants were excellent both for food and price. We would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: The back of the hotel is probably quieter as it is off the main road.

A very good hotel. You get your money value!!! Good service, clean comfortable quiet rooms and nice bath. The only problem is that it's not right in the centre of the tourist area, but if you don't mind 20 minutes walk or 10€ taxi, it's recommended.

We stayed at this hotel for three nights as part of a work trip plus a day or two for sightseeing. The location is convenient, as it is close to the Coliseum and there is a Metro station a few minutes away. There are a number of good traditional restaurants within easy walking distance. The hotel itself is pretty average for a four star hotel though - the room we had was an end room, so we had more space than some of the other rooms that we glimpsed while they were being cleaned. The rooms are pretty tired decor wise and could do with being updated. The bed was very hard and uncomfortable, and the room was overheated and we had to open the window for the whole time we were in the room, including through the night. The shower was hopeless, and there is no curtain or screen, so everything in the bathroom got sprayed with water. We devised a method of hand holding the shower to overcome this problem. There is also no extractor fan in the bathroom, which contributed to the tropical like temperature in the room. We found the staff to be fairly disinterested, and there was only one person on reception the day we checked out. As she was trying to organise a sightseeing tour for another passenger, it took us over 20 minutes to pay our bill, and we had transport waiting for most of this time. Surely at 9.20 in the morning it is obvious guests will be trying to check out? Overall, I would not stay at this hotel again, as I think it was expensive and did meet my expectations as a four star hotel.

We stayed here on our one night in Rome before heading home. The hotel is in a nice location, very close to the colosseum. The price was a little high, but we did book only a few days before we arrived, so I can't complain about that. The rooms were quite small but that is to be expected. The bathroom was a very nice size and very clean. The room was very warm, we called down to the front desk and they were able to turn on the AC for us with no problem, which made it much more pleasant. The staff was very welcoming and had a cab ready for us in the morning when we had to leave. I would stay here again, maybe in a larger room, but for the 2 of us, the accommodations were good.

One and done. Will not be staying again. Stayed one night and it was enough. Not a good experience from reception to rooms. Only two good things....location to Coliseum is within walking distance and breakfast. We were a large party, understandably no rooms were available at check-in at mid-morning so had to leave luggage at reception. No luggage receipts given so not sure how they control whose luggage belongs to who. Upon returning a few hours later, four out of five of our room types were reassigned to other guests. Reception said they were sold out and could do nothing. Rude staff...she basically ignored us and told us to speak to manager in the morning. By the way, she's the bartender as well. Manager was no better in the morning. Rooms are small and carpets were dirty....but bathrooms were ok.....even had enough space for a bidet!! Room was hot and wanted to turn on AC but found out that the thermostat is centrally controlled by reception and she advised that AC unit would not be turned on until May! Advised to open a window instead! So, I returned to my room and the window opens at most three inches. Left our door open for a half hour to get some circulation. Bed was terrible...very lumpy. Small lobby area, had one computer with internet and free wifi in the lobby. Only two elevators serving the hotel. So slow during peak times....better be prepared to carry your luggage up/down via the stairs. This is a self-serve hotel....no doorman, no concierge, multi-tasked unfriendly staff.

Breakfast was surprising ok for a small hotel and was included in the price. Had enough variety to start one's day.

Will be finding somewhere else next time.

When we arrived, although I had read the good reviews, was surprised how lovely the hotel was decorated. It looked every bit a 4 star hotel, and was fantastic value for what we paid. Mirta, the receptionist, was absolutely lovely and made myself and my partner feel very welcome. The rooms were small, but were everything we needed, and very comfortable. Very central and we found everything within walking distance. Lovely place.
