“pity about the managers lack of charm”
Reviewed 18 December 2013

My husband is disabled and needed a little extra tlc. The manager at reception was incredibly rude when my almost eighty year old sister called to see him at our bedroom. In other words my sister, a non resident, had used the lift!! Actually, it was the manner in which he called and reprimanded me caused the other male receptionists acute embarrassment. We found the rooms clean and adequate, breakfast the same.

Room Tip: try to get a room overlooking the garden

If I wanted a retreat experience Madre Pie would be a good place to spend that time. However, I was travelling with an Australian Liturgical Study Group and many of us needed to be in touch with work etc in Australia. Madre Pie has no wifi but offered us a single terminal for 5 Euro per half hour. This is 2013! Many of us went and sat on benches on the footpath around the corner early in the morning or late at night (after activities for the day) in order to do business etc from home. One of the staff was great - he sympathised with us about wifi and the lack of any laundry facilities! I asked at one point where the sisters did their washing - on rocks in the Tiber? All I got were more blank looks. Room rules expected us to not wash in our rooms (I did) and not eat (I did that too). Breakfast was good and ample, although bigger bowls would be good. And try as we Australians might, we could barely raise a smile out of Mother; hers must be a tough life. I learned mid-way through out stay that the university had booked the place, not the tour operator. Emails have been dispatched! The big positive is the closeness to St Peter's.

Room Tip: Ask for a view of St Peter's dome.

This was my third stay in a religious institution. Basic accommodation was expected and that is certainly what it was. The bed was very firm and uncomfortable and the pillows were lumpy and smelly - my pet hate! Super clean was also anticipated and this it was not. The floor was dusty and the corners of the bathroom floor and the walls of the minute shower recess (had to get into it sideways!) were quite grotty. A large sticky patch on the desk top when removed with a damp cloth left the cloth black and greasy! Toiletries provided were soap, a sachet of body wash and a shoe wipe - no tissues which was not unexpected. Corridors appeared super clean, just a pity the rooms weren't given the same attention. Whilst shutters kept some of the unseasonable heat out the lack of a frig in the room was quite a problem. Food and drink were not permitted in the rooms but the verandah and garden were available for guests use. The biggest problem was the mosquitoes! They were voracious! Breakfast was adequate. The atmosphere in this lodging was very detached - efficient reception staff but totally disinterested. A group of American tourists arriving early after a lengthy flight were denied access to their rooms until 1pm - there was simply no flexibility here. The best thing about Madri Pie is its proximity to St Peters Basilica and the Vatican City. If this is your priority then the Residenza will suffice. However, if you would like to be nearer to other areas of Rome, book elsewhere. I would say this was reasonable value for money in Rome but not a comfortable stay.

We stayed in the residenza for one week and were very happy with it. Although basic, the rooms were absolutely spotlessly clean and adequately provided necessities such as en suite, a hair dryer and a writing desk.

Breakfast was sufficient and enjoyable each day. A range of cold meats, cheeses, rolls, croissants, fruit, hot and cold drinks provided enough choice for everyone.

All staff proved friendly, especially the front of house receptionists. They greeted us with a smile every time we passed and made polite conversation, they were really nice people.

My biggest 'plus point' to the residenza is definitely the location. Basically as close as you can get to St. Peter's square, it is in the best location in Rome. Surrounded by ample shops and restaurants, it proved a great location for some in our group who have mobility difficulties.

October 2013, six of us stayed in the Madri Pie for 5 nights. Absolutely the very best location in close sight of St Peter's dome, with good communications network to adjacent locations in Rome itself.
Madri Pie is extremely clean, relatively quiet, decent breakfasts and lovely garden. The rooms are simple and basic, but are all ensiute with the usual appointments in good order. All members of staff are helpful and pleasant. The residence is surronded with shops, cafes restraunts, etc with a taxi rank directly opposite for travelling further afield.
On balence good value for money, although the rooms are somewhat spartan........perhaps 5 nights was enough.

Room Tip: I believe the rooms with even numbers facing on to the garden would have been quieter, also with a...

We stayed at the Madri pie for four nights in late September in order to attend a conference at the Vatican. In short, the location of Madri Pie was ideal. The No. 64 Bus (to and from Termini) stopped nearby. Mostly importantly, it was only a very short walk via an underpass to the Pope Paul VI Hall. Our room was basic yet very clean and comfortable. The chapel on the third floor was lovely. The breakfast was definitely ample with good variety- although I would have liked yogurt.
Given the time of year, it was helpful to have air conditioning and the locked gate (in the late evening) provided good security. My only disappointment was the lack of Internet, however, a nearby cafe offered free wifi. Given its proximity to the Vatican, we would definitely return to Madri pie.

My cousin said every day "THAT was a great breakfast!" Sweet roll, cold meats, variety of cheese slices, wonderful fruit, yummy bread.

The location was really great for bus #64, 46 & 571 although we only used 64. Very close to the Vatican.

The staff were exceptionally helpful. The facilities were super clean. The elevator was pretty darned good. Overall, highly recommended.
