If you are looking for a small hotel where you are treated like one of the family, where all of Rome is at your doorstep, with great restaurants and a bustling nightlife, then stay here! Giovanna and all the people at Residenza Santa Maria will make sure you are well taken care of, offering great advice on any question you ask. I stayed with my four older children (15-20) in two rooms (#3 & 4) for 5 nights. Breakfast was fresh and plentiful and the coffee great--always a perfect start to the day. We are world travelers but this was our first trip to Rome so being in Trastevere with guidance from the staff made finding our way around easy and also helped us prioritize our activities. We enjoyed the small hotel feeling and environment and will stay here again in future trips to Rome.

Room Tip: We thought both rooms (3 & 4) were good.

The location is terrific. Right in the heart of a great district.

The staff were friendly and helpful. No problems there.

The value was good. Can't complain.

The room itself wasn't great. No outside windows, and it felt a little dark. The AC didn`t really work the first night (the hotel did fix it though). Wifi didn`t work in the room - had to go to the lobby for that.

The breakfast was good, but nothing special.

This is a small boutique hotel and it was my first experience staying at a boutique hotel. Pros: I checked in late but I was emailed a code before hand on how to gain access to the property. Its just about 6 rooms so very homey feel. Bathroom was very updated. Cute patio for smoking (?) or coffee or drinks outside the bedroom. Cons: Red velvet material, really?, dated, small furniture.
The staff was lovely and and accommodating and breakfast was continental but good.

The staff was wonderful, very friendly and helpful. The beds were comfortable, the room quiet, and great location! Loved it. The location in Trastevere was excellent. It was across the river from many of the main sites but easily within walking distance.Would recommend without hesitation and would stay there again!

We stayed at the Residenza for 4 nights and this was our first trip to Italy. When we go back to Rome some day we will stay again. The room we had (family of 4 - room #1) was perfect. The size was great, the beds and pillows were comfortable. The staff is amazing - warm, friendly and helpful. The breakfast - with the wonderful espresso or cappuccino - was great.

The Trastevere neighborhood is wonderful with shops and restaurants right out your door and all other tourist spots are a short walk away.

I was hesitant because the accommodation is so small but my family all wants to return to our friends at the Residenza some time in the future.

Our trip was pretty last minute but luckily we were able to score a room at the Residenza Santa Maria. It's located off a small cobbled street with plenty of restaurants around. We HIGHLY recommend Le Mani in Pasta, which is only a 7-10 min walk. The room we had was very clean and comfortable. I think the only small negative was you can clearly hear your neighbors coming and going but it wasn't a bother since most of the customers here are couples, no children, loud families, etc.

Location wise, it was absolutely perfect. Not crowded with tourists but not tucked away too far from social life. We walked to all attractions, the farthest (Colosseum and Spanish Steps) being only 25 mins - we walk a bit fast so it may take others 30-35 mins. Breakfast wasn't anything extravagant but it was satisfying - charcuterie, cheese, croissants, fruit, eggs and of course wonderful cappuccino.

The staff was pleasant and very helpful. You'll be sure to receive a "Buongiorno!" each time they see you.

We stayed at the Residenza Santa Maria in the first week of July '13... I had done a fair bit of research into choosing our accomodation and I have to stress that whatever I had read about this hotel didn't do justice.
Rooms are the standard European size which meant small to us spoilt Asians but it was spotlessly clean, super comfortable beds, clean and fresh linen and quiet.
Hotel is located minutes away from Piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere but tucked away in a quiet lane. The area is buzzing in the evening with local artisans and musicians so was perfect for us after a long days of doing the tourist rounds.
It's a 30 minute walk to the Colosseo but the tram can serve the purpose just as well.. Loads of eateries and pizzeria round the area...
Staff were super helpful and friendly.
Finally, enough can't be said about their breakfast. Though Continental, it's tasty, fresh and otherworldly!
In short, the folks at the Residenza Santa Maria spoilt us for the rest of our trip... And we still had Florence, Venice, Montenegro, Greece and Croatia left!

The Residenza San Calisto ( previously know Residenza Santa Maria), is a small exclusive Hotel de charme, located I the heart of Rome, just a stone's from the magnificent and picturesque square of Santa Maria in Trastevere. This boutique Hotel is the result of the skilful restoration of a 17th century building. The whole house is dominated by brick arches, wooden ceilings, artistic hand painted frescos and wall decorations which give to the Residenza Santa Maria an atmosphere of refined elegance. With only 6 rooms, the Residenza Santa Maria is somewhat smaller than its namesake which allows for even greater atmosphere, notwithstanding the fact that having only recently opened it is also equipped with high tech environment. The large and quite, no smoking, rooms, some of which family rooms, are fully equipped with private bathroom with tub and shower, A/C, telephone, mini-bar, safe, satellite flat panel TVs, free internet connection, boiler for tea/coffee and other amenities. In the breakfast room, once a Roman cistern of the II cen. BC, decorated by original ancient Roman artifacts found on site during restoration of the building, guests can enjoy a rich and delicious buffet breakfast, (scramble or boiled eggs, ham, cheese, salami, fresh bread, assortment of biscuits, cakes, fresh fruits, yogurt, fresh croissants, selection of fruit juices etc.). Thanks to great location, from the Residenza Santa Maria, guests can easily reach the main tourist sites like Campo de' Fiori, Navona Square, the Pantheon, Spanish Steps, Trevi's fountain, the Roman Forum and Coliseum with just a relaxing stroll through a maze of fascinating medieval streets. The Vatican Museum/Sistine Chapel and St Peter's Square are a few minutes away. Furthermore Trastevere, apart from the beauty of its mediaeval narrow little streets, is filled with typical restaurants, markets, pubs and cafes. The Residenza Santa Maria also offers services like transfer to and from the airport, private guided tours, laundry service, shiatsu massage, beauty centre, baby sitting service and car and scooter hire, as well as offering free use of bikes to its personal guests. ... more   less
