Very good roman plates prepared with creativity, in a neibourhood that often caters esclusively to tourists this one stands out. Good service and a wine cellar part that is a mini tour into ancient rome.

Our hotel recommended Spirito Divino when looking for a great meal in Rome. He was right. Each item we picked was fantastic - so fresh and organic. I can still taste the cheese, and the fresh pasta. The whole family was friendly and really made you feel special and right at home at the same time. In ture Italian fashion, you spent several hours at dinner, but we were enjoying ourselves so much that the time passed quickly and it only added to the experience.

If you take a tour of the Vatican, you'll see a statue that was found in the basement of this restaurant. We were surprised when we heard our tour guide point it out and mention Spirito Divino, but it made us smile because we had a chance to think upon our delightful experience we had at dinner the night before.

Despite having found Il Gabriello (which has amazing reviews on TA) nice, it is clear to us that Spirito Divino is simply divine and is miles ahead of Il Gabriello (out of the three restaurant we went to, we would rank Spirito Divino first by miles, Trattoria Moderna second, and Il Gabriello third).

To start with, the location put us off a bit as it is a bit remote from the crowd, but this end up being a positive. Once you get greated by the son (a bit eccentric but extremely nice, friendly, fun and knows how to make people comfortable) of the owner and cook, you automatically feel at home. The setting is very nice, the choice of dish large (although all our first choices were sold out as they only cook fresh ingrediends and we arrived after 9pm, so our fault) and the wine list to dream about.
Our starter were the chicken liver pate (onctuous mousse with sweet layer of gelatine, absolutely suculent) and a water melon / goat cheese salad (refreshing but creamy, a great balance of flavour). Our main courses were cold spaghetti with tuna tomatoes (an amazing dish where you see no fish but the flavour of tuna explodes in your mouth without being over-powering) and the beef in tomato sauce roman style (sounds simple but the spice used is both soft and powerful, yet balanced, i still dream about this dish a week later... Almost orgasmic ;-) ).
The wine we chose was a Barolo Boroli 2011 which was a pure delight (and at eur60 a bottle, we found it very nicely priced (we live in London so maybe are we biased).

To us, Spirito Divino is a must go. We understand that the cook is a biologist by training who cooks as a hobby.... Well, it would be great if i could be as good at my hobbies as this woman (an artist) is at cooking.

There is simply not enough good words to describe how great this restaurant is.

My girlfriend and I went to Spirito Divino on a tip, and couldn't have been more pleasantly surprised. We were seated by the friendliest waiter I have ever met in Italy, who turned out to be the son of the family who runs the place.

My first impressions left me with a tiny bit of doubt. Both son and father waited on us and spoke excellent English. In a Roman restaurant this is often a sign of trouble, indicative of a focus on tourists. However, when the father walked us through every single menu item, making suggestions on the go, with great knowledge and very friendly, my doubts faded quickly. We felt very well cared for in this restaurant, even before the food arrived.

The restaurant itself is in a beautiful old building, that has a well and wine cellars older than the colosseum (go have a look!). The atmosphere is very pleasant. There were clean, decent toilets as well. Something you don't always get in Roman restaurants.

Now, the food, in one word, was amazing. We made sure to order different things and they were all delicious. You will have to get the three course Italian dinner (antipasti, pasta, main course) to get the full experience, although they won't blink an eye if you just get one of their delicious pastas. You'd just be missing out! The menu offers a nice range of options, all from organic sources. It has "slow food" items, which are clearly marked, that I really appreciated.

We were a bit wary about ordering a dessert, as the three courses had left us rather full. The father suggested that we share a dessert, and that he'd pick something for us. He assured us repeatedly that we could refuse it if we didn't like it. Well, we knew beforehand that wouldn't happen in this restaurant, but the crème brûlée we got was simply magical. The father told us it had been prepared using the original recipe, which apparently, is not French, but rather English.

Overall, I can recommend this place to everybody. I even feel a bit guilty writing such a positive review, as it feels like I'm giving away a secret. Great food, great atmosphere, extremely welcoming, knowledgeable and accommodating staff. Can't wish for more in a restaurant.
