It's not cheap (€10-20 for starters and 1st plates and €15-30 for 2nd plates. A bottle of the very good "house" red wine was €15) but it's worth it. Dishes are perfectly prepared, fresh and flavorful. Sausage ravioli was good, pumpkin ravioli was great, steak was very good, and risottos were also very good. I wouldn't go out of my way to come here, but if you're in the area it's a very good choice.

Velando is one of my favorite places in Rome. You can always count on a meal that is quiet, elegant, but not expensive. It is a small place, which contributes to the nice atmosphere. The cuisine is northern Italian--Lombardian, which is a nice alternative in Rome. The owner herself tends to the tables and always is very welcoming and pleasant. The food is delicious and creative. They have a nice wine list; it's always better to ask the owner to recommend something in order to find some really nice accompaniments to the food. There is nothing touristy about it, so if you go, prepare to eat like the locals and you'll have a great experience.

This restaurant which we picked upon reading about it in the Timeout guide would have been average and overpriced if not for my husband's main course - Veal Milanese - which was the worst Veal Milanese I have ever tasted anywhere! It is difficult to ruin this dish - a breaded veal cutlet, unfortunately as my husband was cutting it piece by piece all he could find was fat, fat and more fat. When we called our server she has suddenly lost all proficiency in English, and the manager just gave us a shrug and offered to serve up another fatty cutlet after we have already finished the meal. The whole experience left us with very bad taste in our mouths - really. What excuse can I think of for Timeout guide? Well, a lesson for me - not to buy another outdated guide ever again. Advise to fellow travellers - rely on your intuition - after abandoning our guide we would several wonderful restaurants on the other side of the river just by walking by or talking to English speaking locals.

Located in the Borgo neighborhood near St. Peter's, Velando offers an intimate dining experience with attentive service and excellent food. It is ideal for a business meal, either over lunch or my favorite way of doing business: a long, leisurely Italian evening meal, with good food and good wine to stimulate conversation. It would also be a nice spot to spark, continue, or reignite a romance. Its specialty is Lombardian cuisine, which is light and flavorful. The price is a little higher than others in the neighborhood, but well worth the quiet, small restaurant.
