“True Gem”
Reviewed 25 January 2014

Just got back from two week vacation in Rome and got the chance to eat several times at Velando. We were introduced to this restaurant by a Monsignor who has been with the Vatican for 50 years and truly knows what is good around the area.
This is a charming restaurant that might have no more than 10 tables (If that) and is attneded primarily by one of the owners. She is not only an incredible host, but truly demonstrates that you do not need multiple waiters to provide good service. Most times we were there, she would take care of 3-4 tables at a time and at no moment did we feel unattended.
The Chef uses primarily seasonal ingredients and foods that are cooked to perfection. If they have it, you must order the Risotto a la Miele (Honey Risotto) and the grilled cheese with quail eggs apettizer.
I have been to Italy multiple times and have eaten at some of the top restaurants in the city and if you want to eat some good Italian food in a cozy environment, this is the place to go. This is not one of those Vatican area tourist traps.

“Beautiful authentic Italian food”
Reviewed 17 September 2013

We visited this restaurant on the recommendation of the concierge at our hotel and what a find it turned out to be. The restaurant is quite small but you get the feeling that you are dining in the home of the owners. The food was anabsolute delight and the service was exceptional, nothing was too much trouble even if it was 'off menu'. We came away feeling that we had enjoyed a special evening.

“A little and silent rest. next to the Vatican. Perfect for a resting lunch.”
Reviewed 8 July 2013

If you are planning a visit to the Vatican City or Vatican Museums, this is yur place for a nice lunch or dinner after an intense and tiring day. I was there for lunch but being a little place with no day light inside you could hardly tell the difference. A lovely lady will welcome you and will describe you the recepies she has for the day. I had an amaizing salmon carpaccio, a terrine of prawns and fish ravioli in a very good fresh tomato sauce. This is a small and kind of secretive place, so don't expect anything cool or glamour but only a very interesting home made cousine based on recepies from the Veneto area. Enjoy and relax.

“Charming Restaurant - GREAT Service & Food!”
Reviewed 29 March 2013

This is my second time eating at Velando... it is right around the corner from the Vatican and is absolutely charming! The owner is so friendly, and she will make fabulous suggestions (including wine pairings). Her English is pretty good, so that was lucky for us! Our food was delicious, and the meal ended with a complimentary Limoncello and a sampling of delicious chocolates!

“Very classy and gourmet”
Reviewed 8 September 2012 via mobile

It's not cheap (€10-20 for starters and 1st plates and €15-30 for 2nd plates. A bottle of the very good "house" red wine was €15) but it's worth it. Dishes are perfectly prepared, fresh and flavorful. Sausage ravioli was good, pumpkin ravioli was great, steak was very good, and risottos were also very good. I wouldn't go out of my way to come here, but if you're in the area it's a very good choice.
