Orsa Maggiore for Women Only
Ranked #81 of 1,195 Speciality Lodging in Rome
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 2 October 2013

I had stayed at Orsa Maggiore during a trip to Rome 9 years ago and booked it again for a longer Rome stay last month. All was pretty much as it had been before with a few improvements - "reception desk" is now right at the entry, which enhances the interactions with staff and makes asking questions more spontaneous. The addition of refrigerators and cooking facilities is very convenient - a stash of prepared lettuce along with some bread and fruit made for convenient evening meals after a full day of sight-seeing.
While this is a hostel, there are options for a single room and the shared bathroom/shower facilities have plenty of privacy. Communal breakfast time gives the opportunity for sharing tips and for finding others with whom to trek off to museums or explore the city.
Great value and a good way to have an extended stay in Rome.

This is definitely the best place we stayed on our Italian adventure. It's within walking distance of the Vatican, Campo di Fiori, and Piazza Navona. There's a bus stop about a block away that can take you anywhere else you would like to visit. If I ever make it back to Rome I would definitely stay here again. The staff was very friendly and our four girl room was huge. Other hostels crowd rooms with numerous bunkbeds, but we had plenty of room.

We stayed in this hostel for 5 nights and it was great! :D

The rooms are clean ample and have big windows, so they're light and friendly. The hostel has a beautiful atmosphere and a nice backyard, where they often play music in the evenings. the kitchen facilities are good and you have free interne access aswell!
The bathrooms are okay, there are a lot of showers.

the location of the hostel is perfect! you can reach everything within a 10 - 20 minutes walk (the vatikan, the town cente, piazza signora, fontana di trevi etc.). the hip part of town (trastevere) is only a 3 minute walk away, so you can have dinner and drinks at night in the middle of rome's night life, where they play life music and everyone comes together.
also you can reach all the other places is rome to see by bus within 15 -20 minutes (the colloseum, pizza del popolo, makro musuem).

the hostel is the perfect place to stay in rome for low-budget traveller! the people there are nice and friendly and it was a pleasure to stay there, i will come back some day for sure! :D

The hostel has spacious dorms with no bunk beds. Bathrooms are cleaned every day. It's peaceful and quiet, just what you need after a whole day of sightseeing. If your a cook - the kitchen lacks some supplies (like cutting board and proper knives) but we somehow managed to prepare yummy meals! Location was perfect, very close to the Vatican. I was able to reach all the sights on foot. I loved hanging out in Trastevere area - bars, cafes, live music and good atmosphere. The small cafe/bar in the patio of the hostel building sells good and cheap drinks (I wish I found out about that earlier:)

The location of the hostel was excellent. It was a 10 minute walk from the centre of Trastevere (a place with excellent food and great local 'hangout').
To access other parts of Rome there were great access to buses which transported you to almost anywhere you could think of.

The staff speak excellent English and are very friendly and willing to help you with the use of public transport and recommendations for sightseeing and places to eat.

It's a perfect place to crash after a long day of sightseeing. An added bonus was retuning at the end of each day to your bed being made and your room tidied.

There is a kitchen to cook ones own food and a fridge and all utensils one would need.
The only caution would be the breakfast. It was very simple and would recommend buying some food to sustain you for the day. Breakfast was served from 8-10.
There was also a cafe downstairs which was filled every night and was recommended in guide books as a great place to eat.

In regards to the price it was worth the money. There was an addition to the price of the city tax which was €8 when I visited in August 2013.

Overall the atmosphere was very secure as there was someone at the desk 24/7 and those tough Italian women would not let anyone past they did not know.

I would stay there again.

The staff here is extremely useful and I loved being in Trastevere. It's a much more authentic neighborhood in Rme but is still close to everything and very fun. The hostel is very clean, but not a party hostel, which is what I prefer. There is a nice kitchen and pots and pants, etc., and people make dinner every night so there's always someone around to talk to. Breakfast is as good as you can expect for a free breakfast. Lots of clean bathrooms and showers. There are no bunks, so everyone gets their own bed (though it's a narrow European bed), plenty of room, and an almost closet-sized locker. I would definitely return here. The only downside is that you can only stay here if your whole group is women, that said, nothing about this place hits you over the head with a "women only" message. There just happen to be no guys around.

Pros- clean, easy to get to with their directions, quiet location, comfortable in the dorm room- had plenty of space (unlike other hostels that sometimes cram bunk beds in a small room), helpful staff
Cons- not close to many tourist sights, only the Vatican nearby, somewhat difficult to get to other things, spotty internet service

Overall, my stay in this hostel was better than many others that I've been in. I felt safe, comfortable, and welcomed.

Room Tip: Rooms with a window to the courtyard are more noisy at night, since there are often small concerts o...
