Owner description: Probably the most famous chapel in the world because of its incredible artwork, notably "The Last Judgment," Michelangelo's stunning fresco covering 10,000 square feet of the ceiling and wall.

“Through Eternity Tour was the key”
Reviewed 23 November 2013

Our Through Eternity tour guide gave us an I depth primer before entering as you are not allowed to take pictures and no tour speeches can be given inside the chapel. It is important to have the information about the history behind the paintings on the ceiling and the rapture painting on the wall to truly appreciate the art.

“Early entry with a guide is far superior”
Reviewed 21 November 2013

We did a private guided tour so got access a little before the crowd. That meant there were far fewer people and we got a decent viewing in a quieter, less crushed environment. It's very impressive, and the amazing history our guide was able to share, such as the various artists working simultaneously who covered there paint mixing and application 'secrets' from the others, the hidden messages in the art, including some irreverence.

A must see if you are in Rome but only under the right conditions. Don't go as part of the normal tourist flock, it would be unbearable. We used Italy With Us and they were just amazing.

“The Ultimate Michelangelo Expereince”
Reviewed 18 November 2013

I cannot begin to emphasize the beauty and importance of this historical treasure. It does not matter what religion you are, or if you're not religious, you will be speechless at the sheer beauty and majesty of this Chapel. Michelangelo was indeed a master of all things beautiful, but don't miss the other artists contribution to The Sistine either. Suggestion: Be sure and get a guide your first time through The Sistine to understand its history, how and why it was built, how the artists were selected and how it's used even today.

“Night Opening the only way”
Reviewed 18 November 2013

We reserved night opening tickets for 7pm, and after about an hour walking through the museum without any crowds we ended up in the Sistine Chapel. It was empty! Maybe 50 people total inside, which left plenty of seats all over. We sat, admired, walked around, sat in different areas to admire the ceiling from different perspectives, etc. for nearly an hour. Just remarkable. If you want to see it, get easy seating, and not deal with crowds go for the night openings. The downside is that St. Peter's is closed so you'll have to go at another time to see that. But to be in the chapel without many people was worth it. There were still a few idiot tourists who tried to sneak photos, but since it was so empty the security was able to harass them until they deleted their photos. Just enjoy the beauty and buy a postcard.

“Must see”
Reviewed 18 November 2013

It seems ridiculous to write a review about the Sistine Chapel. One of the greatest art accomplishments in history -- known by millions around the world - painted over four years by Michelangelo himself. It is truly awe-inspiring and phenomenal. It's a small room and usually very crowded. If you can get a seat on one of the benches around the wall, do so as it can get tiring standing there and holding your head up to view the ceiling. They forbid pictures here but people were constantly violating that (don't do it!). You are allowed to stay as long as you want.
