This part does require some effort and costs some money. Eur 6 pp using stairs all the way, or 8 pp using elevator for the first part.
It remains great to take steps all the way. If you go early in the morning it is relatively quiet. Unfortunately that means the sun is over Rome, in particular today that made it hazy.
Anyway worth the cost and every step made to get up. Also inside in the Cupola is a great view down, no longer photographable though due to the high fences.

You can buy a ticket to walk up over 500 steps or pay a couple of Euros more to take the elevator. Please remember the elevator just helps you reduce some climb, but you still have a reasonable 300 odd steps to climb. Once there the view of the city is remarkable.

It's a fun climb through the dome's inner workings and the views are simply amazing. At the top, you are able to purchase religious artifacts which have been blessed by the pope!

Upstairs are a little bit difficult to climb because of architecture but it's funny and you will not regret.
