“Perfect location for Vatican City, not too expensive”
Reviewed 25 June 2017 for a stay in September 2016

My mother and I stayed here last year (2016) on our once-in-a-lifetime trip to Rome. She is a disabled traveller, so we really appreciated the lift/elevator in the building, and the hip bath was perfect to help relieve her sore back after a long day of exploring. We stayed for 6 nights. I would be very happy to recommend this place for a disabled person who is not dependent on a wheelchair, as the lift is tiny - fits a max of maybe 4 slim people standing quite close to each other - and I do not think it would accommodate a wheelchair unless it is folded. It would almost certainly not fit a powered wheelchair unless it was a child-size, but possibly not even then.

We had a late flight because we stopped in Paris for the day before arriving at Rome. Valerio and his lovely wife had agreed to pick us up at the airport and settle us in, despite the late hour (midnight-ish), for a fee of €50 (return). I think that we would've been hard pressed to get taxis any cheaper, and it was so nice to not have to worry about getting to the right location after midnight. (Neither of us speak any Italian, but Valerio and his wife are fluent in English, so it worked out fine.) At that time we also gave them cash for the city tourist tax of €3.50 per night, per person, which was clearly stated in the booking, so there was no surprises there. The city tourist tax isn't something that can be paid via Tripadvisor as far as I could tell, so just be aware you'll need to hand them cash when you see them. The money isn't for them - it's a tax the city takes on tourists staying in hotels, B&Bs, etc.

So you might be wondering why this is 4 star and not 5 in my rating. There were two issues - both relatively quickly resolved - that has caused me to reduce the star rating by one: the difficulty in being able to contact the owners in case of issues, and an issue with the electricity/air conditioning. It may sound petty, but the fact is, we booked specifically with air conditioning because we wanted to be comfortable. Rome in September is still quite hot and sticky. We couldn't get the air conditioning in our room to work. It was 3am, we were so hot and exhausted from travelling, and couldn't get any relief despite taking cold showers. I could turn on the air conditioning for a moment or two, then it would cut out - and kill the electricity in the entire apartment when it did.

I couldn't reach the owners (there is no working phone in the apartment - you need to bring your own phone, and try to contact them through email or Whatsapp). Due to our late flight, by the time we were settling down to sleep, it was almost 3am. (Not saying the owners should be contactable at that time - but we were really alarmed that the electricity cut out at 3am when I tried to turn on the air conditioning. I had to use the light on my phone to find the circuit breaker to get the electricity back on.) In short, our first night was pretty miserable.

We were able to reach the owners the next day, and eventually they discovered that the air conditioning unit in the other guest bedroom - which had been locked and completely inaccessible to us - had somehow been left on. This leads me to the next thing that travellers might like to know.

Throughout Italy, and especially in Rome, the electricity is notoriously flaky. You cannot expect to run more than a few appliances at the same time without the circuit breaking. The locals know this and deal with it; foreign travellers are not as likely to know. By trying to run the air conditioning in our room while the other was on, the electricity in the entire apartment would just shut down. I found the circuit breaker box purely by being nosy about every single cupboard I could see. The breaker was clearly well used, and fortunately I was able to turn the electricity back on. But as foreign travellers with no understanding of what was going on, we spent the first night worried that we'd booked an apartment with something very wrong with the electricity and/or the air conditioning.

Valerio and his wife worked out the problem quickly when they arrived to investigate the next afternoon, but I think they could have avoided the problem entirely by ensuring that rooms not being used didn't have the air conditioning on before renting the place to us. It would have helped if they'd explained about the electricity potentially being flaky, and leaving detailed instructions on how to work the air conditioning units. In the end, my mother and I figured out that we couldn't have the air conditioning running, and the electric kettle on to boil, and the fridge/freezer plugged in, and the television on, all at the same time. And we got used to flipping the circuit breaker back on when we overloaded the circuit.

I think if they take these suggestions on board for future travellers, this would very easily be a 5 star place to rent for a lovely city break, centrally located (literally 5-10 minutes walking from Vatican Museums), with comfortable beds, good amenities (when they work!), and really pleasant, hard-working owners who genuinely want their customers to have a great time in Rome. I would be happy to stay there again, now that I know how everything works in the apartment. :)

“Great location for clean updated historic apartment”
Reviewed 24 October 2016 for a stay in October 2016

The apartment is on the 4 th floor with an elevator. Clean tile floor. Fully outfitted kitchen. Only 3 blocks to Ottaviano metro stop and Vatican. Lots of restaurants, shops, laundry mat nearby. Safe area and quiet apartment. A little street noise until 9 pm then it's quiet.
