Hotel Piero della Francesca

Reviewed 2 August 2013

I will preface this review by disclosing that I am quite familiar with Urbino, having studied two separate summers on "campus"; so, I did know my way around, though I could see how it would be frustrating to arrive at this hotel if you don't. Despite the fact that this hotel is slightly outside city walls and requires either walking up at least one lengthy hill (two if you're going to take via Mazzini and then via Raffaelo from Borgo Mercatale), and preferably a taxi or 1.50Euro ride on the n.3 pullman for the initial ride there with your luggage, it is actually - as others have said - a mere 15 minute walk from the city center.

The rooms are clean, relatively spacious, with a small tv and plenty of drawer/armoir space. The bathroom I had was immaculate and looked like it was scrubbed down every day. They don't have air conditioning in the rooms, but they do in the lobby. The included breakfast is the simple water/milk/coffee/juice and croissants/bread/ham/cheese/cereal one you'll find at many Italian hotels. The staff is quite friendly and helpful, and will be more than happy to assist you with directions towards the city center or anything else in the vicinity. Wi-Fi is available throughout the hotel.

I paid 30Euro/night for this hotel, even taking into account the weekend (Thursday - Tuesday) in a more touristy month (July), and including breakfast. Even though Urbino is a relatively cheap city, if you're willing to walk a bit (which you're going to do anywhere in Italy - live a little!), and don't mind staying slightly outside the city's walls, this hotel is one of the best values available.

I was really impressed with this hotel, I paid €30 per night including breakfast and got a real 3* hotel (some 3* hotels in Italy are actually more like 1*). The location is great, it's just outside the old town walls - a very a scenic 10 minute stroll (it is not uphill as described in the comment below). If you have a big suitcase, there is also a bus which leaves from the central square and bus station and drops you right in front of the hotel. But as I say it's very doable on foot. I had a double bed, en-suite, flat screen tv and terrace, the room was also very spacious. Not bad at all for the price!! The breakfast was the only thing that was very shabby. I'd recommend starting the day with breakfast in a characteristic bar in the old town centre. Enjoy Urbino, it's magical!!!

A simple accomodation just 15 minutes walk to the city centre. Free parking possibilities at the hospital in front of the hotel building. We got a nice large room with balcony overlooking the hills. Clean hotel with good reception. We had a problem with our Tv set in the room and the receptionist arranged immediately for repairing it. Bus stop outside the hotel. Poor free breakfast. No restaurant.

Room Tip: Ask for a quiet room not overlooking the main road in front of the hospital.

The name of a great artist is not enough to make this hotel a great hotel. Our room was spacious enough but there was no air conditioner, the room is heated by a radiator that we could not control, so we could warm up with only a blanket. The hair dryer did not work, as well as the bathroom lights on the console. The breakfast was missing some key ingredients: there were only a few sweets, no ham, no cheese, no salty food.
In addition, coffee and other hot drinks were served by an automatic dispenser.
Finally, when we returned to our room after breakfast we found the cleaning lady who was already rearranging the room and had already changed the towels, even if we had not yet left and we still had all our things inside the room: this is not is professional in our opinion.
For what regards the location, the hotel is about a kilometer from the city walls, around which there is paid parking and free parking. However, you can leave your car near the hotel and get to the city by bus, the stop is right outside the hotel.
Let's say the accommodation was not so bad but other hotels, for the same price, gave us greater satisfaction.

The hotel is quite conveniently located. Unfortunately, the breakfast is scarce. We were informed their own restaurant is open only after summer as Urbino is more visited from September onwards by schools or for conferences.

At first I found this hotel unappealing but it grew on me although it was pretty much deserted when we were there.
Very outdated with candlewick breadspread and one of those tiny lifts, but the rooms were spacious and we found the position useful to just park the car and walk into town without having to enter those narrow steep streets Was located across from the hospital, about a 10 minute walk to the gates and a bit further to the main square.
The bathroom had one of those horrible snake showers with no hooks to hang it up. Breakfast extremely meagre probably the poorest we had in 10 weeks. Had free wifi which only worked in the lobby.
Seemed fairly large and probably (from the size of the breakfast and lounge room) caters for groups. Desk was pretty disinterested but answered any queries we had.

Simple, plain hotel, could do with some updating but cheapest three star in town. Pleasant view from balconies at the back (see photo). If you go during term time, there are two schools behind the school which can be noisy around 8 am and 12:30 pm.
Shower not very powerfull, we had a twin room with rather small beds. Linen changed every other day. Very friendly and helpful staff, but the advertised free Internet stopped working after three days and was not repaired during our nine day stay.
Ten to fifteen minute walk from the centre of town, dependent on going the short but steep way or the longer way on the flat.
