“Modern, Clean and Comfortable Facilities”
Reviewed 6 February 2014

I recently spent one night at Starhotels Excelsior in Bologna and I come away having mostly positive comments about this property. I arrived by automobile and quickly found the hotel's parking garage, which you first must navigate through two narrow marble/concrete columns. The flow of traffic into the garage is bi-directional, though there is no room for two cars to pass each other. Once I got my car situated, I easily found an entrance into the hotel lobby from the parking area.

Starhotels Excelsior is an older hotel and its age is apparent by looking at the exterior. The main train station in Bologna is located directly across the street from the hotel, so it is an ideal location for transient visitors arriving by rail. The interior has been totally refurbished and everything appeared to be relatively new and very clean. I was checked in by Sabrina in the reception area and she provided a warm welcome and very professional services. I was even found on the Starhotels database from a previous stay at their property in Trieste, Italy.

The lobby was quite busy with several meetings and conferences being held in the hotel. There were plenty of places to sit and watch the activity and I particularly enjoyed the massive windows open to the sidewalk outdoors. A bank of four elevators effectively functioned and there was no time lost waiting for an elevator to become available.

My room was small, though nicely furnished with dark wood furniture. The bed mattress was very comfortable, as were the linens, pillows and blankets. The writing desk had only two available electric outlets to charge my electronics and I ended up using another outlet located in the bathroom. The wardrobe was fitted with an interior light that I found to be a nice touch. A large flat screen television featured countless channels in many international languages. I didn't hear and street noise from my second floor room; however hallway noise was disruptive at times. A complimentary coffee and tea tray was also available in the room.

The mostly marble bathroom was clean and furnished with modern plumbing fixtures. The entrance into the shower stall was extremely narrow and people with a few extra pounds will find it very difficult to enter the shower, as I did. The bath and hand towels were large and of good quality. All the amenities you would expect to find in a hotel of this class were available in the bathroom.

I didn't eat in the hotel's restaurant; however I did stop for a cocktail during the advertised Happy Hour. The bar is well stocked, however the young bartender didn't know how to make the basic cocktails. He made my Vodka Martini on the rocks, with a splash of sparkling water. It was terrible and should have been served up in a Martini glass with a twist of lemon peel, not a slice of lemon. The young man explained that he is just learning to make drinks and added that there are a total of 50 cocktails on their menu. The Happy Hour buffet was well stocked and for 8 euro a drink, you have access to the buffet. Not bad.

Breakfast was crowded and it was difficult for me to find a place to sit. Eventually a table opened. There was a good selection of breakfast items and the waiter staff was attentive in obtaining coffee or tea orders.

All in all, I enjoyed my stay at Starhotels Excelsior and I would return here on future visits to Bologna. I recommend this property to the TripAdvisor community.

We stayed for a couple of nights in mid-January with the intention of exploring this part of Italy. The hotel is in a fantastic location right next to the station and airport bus and can be used as a hub to allow travel by train easily to most of Italy. We went to Parma and Modena but for a longer trip it would be possible to do Venice, Florence, Milan and Rome within 90 minutes or so. Hotel was spotlessly clean and service from all the staff was attentive, breakfast was very good and well presented food. Area around the station, as with most places, is a bit dodgy but the hotel is a haven of tranquility by comparison to its surroundings. Possible to walk to the sights of Bologna in maybe 10-15 mins and plenty of choice of restaurants. Doesn't seem yet to be too touristy which was nice.

We stayed there for one night and had a good stay. As we came by train, it was great to see the hotel next to train station. The room was fine, clean and the hotel was in a walking distance to main places.

It is maybe not new but comfortable. Stand on the terrace, we can see nice street view in the morning and in the evening. Staffs are friendly there. The cocktail from the bar are great. We can easily find all our visiting point nearby.

Stayed here for one night and was very disappointed. This was the worst hotel we stayed in during our trip. The room reeked of smoke and had not been renovated in some time and looked like it was from the 1980's. The carpet was worn and there were odd spots on the walls. The couch was stained and torn. The internet access was difficult to access and then limited. Breakfast service was poor. Check in and check out took too long.

What do you expect from 4 star hotels?

Gorgeous facilities, high quality and efficiency in many senses, I guess.

This hotel, according to me was poor for the following points:
- mannerism reception staff
- lack of cleanness in the room (dusts and hairs)
- cheap breakfast food
- lazy breakfastroom staff

I think it is wiser to reserve without breakfast, especially if you do not want to wait for 20 minutes for your capuccino. There are a certain number of waiters, but unless you don't ask them for 3 times, they do not serve you a hot drink. In addition, cheap quality coldcuts, cereals, juices and yogurts are not worth tasting. If you just need a cup of coffee and croissant, it is better to opt for many bars outside.

Good luck for your stay!

The building is located in front of the train station. The hotel is very clean, staff very kind and the brk is at the standard level expected from this kind of hotel category. The room was spacious and the parquet gives a very warm and comfortable feeling since the moment we stepped in. I would definitely come back here in a next visit to Bologna.
