Zanarini was probably the most up-market café we visited on our stay in Bologna. It can get very popular and tables become scarce. The quality of the beverages may, (or may not), have been more expensive than competitors but everything we ate or dank on all our stops was excellent. The quality of the items one could graze on during aperitivo time was excellent and I've saved the best for last.

After a mildly disappointing wine-bar lunch, we didn't have a dessert but instead, walked round the corner to Zanarini. The day before I had spotted a display cabinet, bursting with mini cakes and pastries. So we got a seat, ordered two coffees and enquired about the cakes. The waiter knew what we were taking about and simply asked, “Do you want five or ten”? Well...whaddaya think! Within minutes, two small cake-stands appeared, loaded with the most delicious little morsels. For the next fifteen minutes, my wife and I nibbled and shared one of the best desserts on holiday.

This place is class.

Great outdoor seating near the best shopping. Really good coffee and snacks are really good. Try their cheese plate and the prosciutto plate. Really a nice sampling of Italian cheeses. Pastries are really yummy!

A fantastic central location, mouthwatering selection of cakes, ice cream, tortes etc....pick your cake, take it to the bar and order coffee etc and pay for it all then. The lemon and strawberry cake is light as a feather and sharp and fruity!
Fabulous place to relax and watch the world go by

Right in the centre of Bologna, almost in the Piazza Maggiore, this has outside tables, but you need to be inside to get the atmosphere.  Here the glitterati of Bologna - well, people in suits and dresses anyway - meet up for an aperitivo or two, in the early evening (it's all over by 8p.m)
Nicely hustly and bustly, brightly lit, mirrors everywhere, definitely no flip- flops or crotch- hugging shorts.  Order a drink, grab a plate and fill it with the bite-sized morsels laid out on the bar. Olives, mortadella of course, pecorino, savoury pastries, that sort of stuff.  And, as far as we could see, anyway, re-fill your plate if you wanted to. Then stand at the bar and just, well, people-watch.  Can't comment on the meals you  get on the outside tables, but then there are loads more fun places to eat outside in this foodie city . Finally, I loved the way the immaculately suited and coiffed barman swept his eyes over my 'protect ecosystems - recyling' T-shirt and slightly  dishevelled appearance - well, it had been a very hot day  - without demur, before taking my drinks order. It's called sang froid, I believe.

We stumbled across Cafe Zanarini our first day in Bologna as we were walking back from the market to our B+B. It was hot out, so we thought we would stop somewhere that we could enjoy a drink in the shade. We stopped for an apertivo and were pleasantly surprised. As compared to some cafes we encountered on our trip, Zanarini provides a good amount of food with the apertivo and everything was delicious! The drinks were also wonderful. I enjoyed an Americano while my wife had a glass of prosecco. The plaza is a great place to sit and relax while you watch the city go by. The service was very good. We loved this place so much that we came back the next day!
