Hotel Internazionale
Ranked #27 of 102 Hotels in Bologna
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 1 December 2013

The Internazionale is a 10-minute walk away from the rail station and even closer to Bologna's main square, Piazza Maggiore. You can walk to a number of good restaurants nearby (check out the Via Mascarella - off Via Irnerio - for watering holes and restaurants).
The Internazionale has an unprepossessing lobby and aging, temperamental elevators but the rooms are top notch and sleep quality excellent, as long as you get a room facing the rear. Breakfast consists of a lavish spread and is absolutely top quality. If your business meetings are in the city center or if you're a tourist planning to walk around Bologna's main attractions, the Internazionale is a safe bet.

We stayed here for the first two nights of a two week trip, and it was the largest, most comfortable room, with the BEST bed of our entire trip. The bathroom even had double sinks. The only thing is change would be the automatic air freshener on the wall in the bedroom, which didn't bother us as much as we expected it to. Would definitely stay here again.

The breakfast is one reason to visit this hotel. They had everything. Egg, scrambled egg, bacon, ham, prosciutto, juice, musli, different kind of youghurt, and so on. Its the first time outside scandinavia that i have seen gluten free alternatives and lactose free milk in a hotel!!
The room was nice and clean with modern design and wide 32" TV. The crew was helpful, both in reception and at the breakfast.

This was an excellent hotel on one of the main streets in the city and very close to the railway station. It had free Wi-Fi in the rooms, and the breakfast was as good as any hotel we have previously stayed at. The breakfast room was also quite spacious which isn't always the case.

The hotel also offered us a free room upgrade due to having 4 suitcases.

There is a large all day outdoor market in Bologna on a Fri and Sat and our hotel was in a perfect position to stroll through this market numerous times.

Room Tip: I can only say that our room looked out onto the main road, but it was very quiet in the evening. Bo...

Very good hotel. Large rooms, well equipped with large bathroom with a semi-circular bath, and lots of large towels and toiletries. Good location for mots sights and is on the main shopping street. Lots of selection at breakfast though not many choices of chees (my favourite). Knowledgeable and friendly staff . Our room was at the back so no street noise, Air con could have been a bit better, might not cope in summer.

Room Tip: The rooms on the street might be a bit noisy.

The hotel seems to have been refurbished sometime in the 1980s or early 1990s, perhaps with a minor makeover since then (some fittings looked newer). It has obviously had a lot of money spent on it: solid mahogany furniture, doors etc., abundant use of marble throughout, fabric wall coverings (i.e. no paint or wallpaper), top quality beds, sofas etc.

This hotel's good points make it really worth staying here:
- solid 4 star hotel with low prices (€100 or less for a double if you shop around);
- location close to centre;
- many quiet rooms;
- fairly good breakfast offering, well-stocked bar, even if a bit on the expensive side;
- meticulously cleaned rooms and bathrooms;
- friendly and helpful staff;
- ample safe in room.

This on its own should usually clinch it for a hotel. However, quite a few niggling aspects let the place down:
- there are stairs in odd places, which means not every room can be reached without steps (=problems moving luggage, pushchairs, wheelchairs);
- the air conditioning has one single setting for the whole building. Either it is switched on and everyone is shivering, even during the summer, or it is switched off and some parts of the building are like a sauna whereas others are ok;
- the south side of south-facing is comprised entirely of windows: this means that if the air conditioning is switched off and the sun is shining they become like greenhouses. Very intelligent (north and east facing rooms are normal, i.e. one single window in the middle of a big wall);
- the bar and mini bars in rooms are very very expensive, though probably in line with many similar hotels in Italy;

I will definitely stay there again, though maybe not in spring or autumn when it is likely to be hot and possible that the hotel is not air conditioned.

This hotel is conveniently situated midway between the railway station and the centre so could not be better located for the visitor to Bologna. The staff were all friendly, breakfasts were good and the bar (very under used on our visit) was very enjoyable. Beds were comfortable and the room plus bathroom very spacious so all in all I would recommend - and that's where this review would have finished.
However, on our return my companion realised she had left some clothes in a drawer in the room. I did not expect a reply but I e-mailed the hotel. To my surprise I received a response saying the clothes had been found and would be posted to us in the UK. Less than a week later the garments are safely here.
So a good hotel suddenly became a very memorable one - for all the right reasons!
