Bologna was the last destination on our Veneto/Emilia Romagna vacation & we were looking for a 4/5 star hotel close to the center of the Old Town. The Corona D’Oro looked like a good bet with mostly positive reviews so we booked for 7 nights.
The hotel is very unassuming from the exterior, with entrance on a (mainly) pedestrian street, which was a good indicator for a quiet environment/good sleep quality as was indeed the outcome. The taxi from the train station was able to drop us off right at the front door, however, with special access into the vehicle-restricted precinct.
The hotel occupies a fully-restored merchant’s mansion, parts of which apparently date from the 14th century, but the lounge & bar areas under a glazed canopy occupying the original courtyard are charming, traditionally furnished and perfect for a glass of wine accompanied by extensive complementary nibbles after 6pm.
The reception staff were always welcoming & friendly and made restaurant reservations for us.
Our room on the 4th floor was lovely with excellent storage and classic furnishings. We had a small balcony with views mainly over the courtyard & roof but the iconic Asinelli tower was clearly visible & this provided a nice “bond” with the historic center, just 2 minutes walk from the hotel. The bathroom, however, was really excellent – marble-clad, roomy with a very large shower alcove. The air-con was efficient and very quiet although the quiet environment enabled us to sleep with the balcony window open at night.
As mentioned by other reviewers, the breakfast area is in the basement, but this is nonetheless a relatively spacious, tastefully decorated area and the food selection is typical of quality establishments. Breakfast cappuccinos were promptly delivered by friendly wait staff.
As mentioned already, the location is about as good as it gets for easy access the main sights of the historic old-town. We had an absolutely marvellous meal (& experience in general) at the historic Papagallo restaurant which was literally 100 meters from the hotel at the base of the two towers.
I have forgotten the details but several hours of wi-fi was included in our rate.
In summary – highly recommended.

Room Tip: Try for a balcony room

This hotel was a perfect choice for a short stay in Bologna. The city centre location in an atmosphericside street very close to the main attractions, the polite, helpful reception, & smart, comfortable room made a great start to a short holiday in Italy. The only criticsm - which stops me giving it 5 stars - is the mediocre buffet breakfast - plenty ofchoice but none of it very appetising. It would be much better to provide a more limited menu but improve the quality.

So....keeping with my system of either great or awful, ...this one is excellent!
What luck, because the typically Italian booking system meant the mid market but expensive place I was booked into, was overbooked. So, giving me a map, and a promise of only a 5 minutes walk (it was..just), I was sent to Corono D'Oro. Tucked down a quiet side street, in the middle of town, this fabulous old building was well decorated (albeit the odd ding, but nothing too awful) with comfortable sofas in the lounge area. Staff were very open, friendly and the free WiFi was arranged immediately as I booked in. The room was very well furnished, with comprehensive built in cupboards, and a massive bathroom complete with huge Wetrooms shower. Best, was a discrete petite balcony looking out over the rooftops of Bologna. Best for me, was a glorious sunrise, with a glow expanding over the terracotta tiles, and ancient buildings. Not exactly a great view, it was still warm and a fabulous way to start any day.
Breakfast was comprehensive, laid out across a number of tables. Masses of fresh fruit, sweet breads, meats & sumptuous cheeses. Topped off with a creamy Capuchino, made to order, this little heaven in the centre of a gorgeous city is an ideal home from home.
Perfect...NO.! But, it is a genuinely great place to stay.

Very nice, small hotel in the very center of Bologna. Extremely clean and well appointed. Good breakfast, nothing spectacular though on that front. Staff was courteous and available. Very pleasant lobby for a quiet discussion or doing work. Good bandwidth on wifi throughout. Price was great considering all these, e110/night.

This is a 4 star hotel but I am not sure why, it's very nice but at 166 euro per night I'd have expected better. For this mornings breakfast, due to a large party descending on the dining room, they ran out of hot food...there was no more to be cooked?
The rooms are at best ok, small. The entrance lobby is lovely but we did notice that the stairs carpet did not see a vacuum in our four day stay??
It's located in a very central part of the city, free bike hire was easy and great fun. Stop here if you are ok with small.
